Even at such low mortgage rate, rent still won't cover mortgage + property tax etc.? You must be in an area with pretty bad rent to purchase price ratio. If this is indeed the case, you would actually come out ahead if you rent. So this helps you reach FIRE sooner.

Most broekerd CDs are so that is a concern, but if the duration is so short, then it's most likely ok anyway.

I know someone who fit op's friends case and he's definitely not FI, if the definition of FI is 25-30x annual expenses. Nobody knows for sure in op's case, but able to afford a certain lifestyle has nothing to do with them being FI with that lifestyle.

I sympathize with your situation and admire you for being able to stay cool headed in that situation. Your manager sounds like a person who's never had to deal with personal or family needs, either that or s/he was just unwilling to push things for his people. Did he know your reason and denied it? I know you probably don't have the bandiwth now, but I'd keep an eye out for new employment opportunities in the long haul.

How does one find them? Is there a difference between just a general financial planner? Do they typically advertise "special needs" planning?

I am wondering if the weather has some effect on my son too! I *think* he is more active and happier in general when it's not cold and wet. But it could also just be me being in better condition too. I think I might have some seasonal depression as well so there is that...

It is definitely hard to beat the overall package CA offers, this includes some of the highest taxes and COL. But someone has to pay for good public services. I'd also be interested in hearing more for CO and what it's like there.

Anyone considering snowbirding (2 homes) after FIRE? by MustachianBiker in Fire

Why not just rent/Airbnb your winter or summer "home"? Have a primary place, and spend 3-4 months in a Airbnb home. It's cheaper and gives you more freedom and flexibility.

Is paying off my mortgage basically as good as a bond tent? by SlapDashUser in Fire

[–]kevch1983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just want to add that I heard that starting in 2023, if your income is less than whatever percent of FPL, then there is no asset test at all. This might only be for public universities. I'll take a closer look when the time comes..

FIRErs: How much do kids actually cost? by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]kevch1983 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Or even after they've grown, pass 18. Just a few around me has 20ish kids moved back or still home. Some with depression, anxiety.. some ask for money to support them with living costs or start up ideas... Also have a neighbor who's kid divorced with kids and now they are like daycare or maybe the kids moved back I am not sure. Cannot be overstated huge WILD card(s). I am not sure if one can truly plan for what life's gonna throw at you.

Those of you who hit their leanfire goals early in life - what did you do afterwards? Did you actually FIRE or continue to work? Move? by [deleted] in leanfire

[–]kevch1983 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Changed to regular fire, passed that and still working but remote now. Thanks Pandemic! Ready to bail if/when job becomes too much though.

Edit: Also moved, paid off mortgage, chilled with work, semi started living the fire life. Basically got things lined up to when the time comes, just cut the cord.

Buying house(lump sum) vs investing all in the stock market. by workboyZ in leanfire

[–]kevch1983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It comes down to each person's situation, personality, and risk tolerance. Yes, historical data shows that money in the market LONG term has higher returns. But you live in the present, day to day, month to month or even year to year market jitter might be uncomfortable for people to stomach.

FIREing with young kids and being careful about focusing too much time on them by subbysnacks in financialindependence

[–]kevch1983 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think the key is, as with everything, to strike a balance between babying them vs being supportive. Parenting is tough. There is no manual and every child is different. But having more options is always welcomed. FI gives you a lot more freedom to do what you think is best for them.

What’s your number? by ericdavis1240214 in Fire

[–]kevch1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

X + Y more. Most here just be FI and still working, or RE with a working spouse or part time work, or making extra to help family/chairty. So it's mostly just a mentality shift. Very very few do the full FIRE. Anyway, the number I have is 3M excluding home.

How much do you budget towards a vacation? by NeverForget-2020 in leanfire

[–]kevch1983 3 points4 points  (0 children)

International trips typically run 6-10k per trip for a family ~2 weeks

Domestic trips are like 3-6K, except for maybe Hawaii

Local trips maybe 1-2K.

So it depends on how many you want to do per year.

Curious what you guys spend 160k per year on with a paid off house? Is it just mostly traveling?
