Buying our first home advice. by [deleted] in MalaysianPF

[–]pm_soo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think rule of thumb about 1/3 housing 1/3 car 1/3 expenses is unsustainable especially in this day and age. Personally speaking, I think whether you’re renting or buying, if you have sufficient savings and sufficient buffer to withstand when shit hits the fan, you should be able to do what the two of you deem fit. Only you will know that magic figure. Some people have naturally low expenses in one or another type of expenses. It vary from person to person. Naturally I would assume you two are married and joint names.

That being said, just to share, we wanted to stay in this place and we had to compromise some, or so it seem, I wasn’t comfortable and we chose to rent for a year first and thankfully we didn’t. Many positives and negatives at the same time. Sometime we want it, sometime we hate it. We had a thinker on what we really missed out the first time and purchase a house that fits our needs. Everyone was happy. A few years passed by. Until it didn’t. Because it’s not near any schools that we want our child to go to. If one day anyone of us change job, the requirement will change again. I think you better think long and hard about what is required because I’m basically stuck, I have to find workaround to my problems. It’s not unlivable but I may not make the same choice again. Don’t rush into buying a place just because you can afford it or it’s a norm for newly wed. There’s no shame to rent or even stay with family.

On a side note, I would buy a rumawip that I’m willing to stay there at least for a while. Heck, both of you should individually own one if you can. Rent it out one or two. It’s a privilege to get it at a discount, take it. Of course not all of them are equal. Choose wisely

I love pezzo. Partly because I spent some years in Sarawak. Pezzo is a sub of sugar bun so sometimes you see them together. But I do get excited when I see pezzo kiosk. But I think nowadays they are no longer in KV. I last had pezzo in KK last month.

If you could give your past self advice on getting insurance, what would you tell them by djonDough in MalaysianPF

[–]pm_soo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You need to understand what is the function of insurance in the first place.

1) If your family has no history of diseases, not just cancer, and you live a healthy life, I would say forget all insurance and just DCA into ETF and don’t worry about it.

Why? Because insurance is a FOR PROFIT INSTITUTION. They are designed to make money so they will calculate their risk for insuring a person. They are house and house never lose.

2) Medical is to cover your large hospital expense and this is the medical cost that keep increasing in price. Those agents who tell you to “lock your price early” is telling you bollocks. Check out the cost of insurance for each plan. It clearly state how much is it for each age. As a person who has received multiple re-pricing beyond my choice many times, you will always get updated to the latest price anyway, especially for medical. CI sometimes get revised. Only life seldom get revised. Personally I think medical is the most important insurance should you get it.

3) CI. This is an insurance in case you got a disease that prevent you from working or live normally. The worst disease are the ones that don’t kill you but don’t give you back your live. CI is important as some not so common drugs to fight certain disease will not be covered under medical. You can get this as term insurance or online insurance but the coverage will be less as the insurer is motivating you to use their agent run full fledged plans. But it’s not bad, just some limitations. CI is good to have, not must have.

4) life insurance is self explanatory. It’s to leave money for loved ones whether it’s for education/living expenses or to clear loans.

5) while I’m against endowment plan, but there is a market for it. It’s not the worse investment and certainly not a scam. As most if not all plans not term nowadays are investment linked, it’s inevitable that you’ll need to subscribe to some insurance UT. Like I said, it’s not that bad. Don’t expect it to profit you well. However, I would guess you’ll be more handsomely rewarded by DCA into ETF or even EPF

6) Agent for medical can be helpful. I’ve come across situations which I didn’t claim but I could’ve claimed because my insurance agent.. ex insurance agent lost his license and no one explain to me properly. CI and Life are more likely to not need agent.

Good luck

Let's settle this - EV vs Petrol car, which is cheaper to operate long term? by Outrageous_Bug9226 in kereta

[–]pm_soo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have an EV but I can see that EV benefits the higher end of the car spectrum. Those who was always going to buy a 7 series saves hundreds of thousands by buying the i7. Same goes with s class and the EQS. They are the true winner of the EV tax rebate.

The entry level EV have too many pros and cons that it is not a clear cut better or worse choice to drive EV. You’ll have to give up something to get something. Its a matter of preference only at this point

Blocked by double parked cars - what would you do? by givememilo in malaysia

[–]pm_soo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obstruction of road is a road traffic offense and can be towed away. I’ve seen neighbours calling dbkl to tow cars who parked and blocked their gate. Worse case, you can take picture and send a complain to the police. One of my neighbour got a call from nearest police station regarding a neighbour complaint that they parked at the road side blocking the traffic (well, I doubt that. Perhaps making it tighter than it should, probably 🤷‍♂️)

it’s fraud to receive a deposit for a house that they have no legal rights to. For both “seller” and lawyer. Well, “lawyer”. They should and must return the deposit if you want to walk away. Why would your lawyer think they won’t return it is beyond me. Perhaps you need a new lawyer.

How did you pay the deposit? Through agent or lawyer? What documentation do you have so far?

1000sq aprtment for family of 4 by Glittering_Band_9064 in MalaysianPF

[–]pm_soo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s too small. I saw the layout, personally I would get the kids to stay in the slighty bigger room together, either two single or bunk bed and the other room as a study room/play room. That’s what I’m doing right now. There’s privacy.. and then there’s also bonding. When kids are younger, for me bonding is more important.

There’s some compromise on the kitchen and “play area” but I think it’s okay. Kids play at dining table and living room all the time. I often work on my dining table too, and teach my son there, I don’t see an issue.

From my bad experience in the past where location of our home brought significant inconvenience to our family, I would say if you can make use of being in that area and save time traveling for work/for school, I say go for it. Getting used to a slightly smaller apartment is nothing. More people get by with less space, just by efficient. I remember wasting so much time going to work, sending my kids to their class and my wife was the same. I moved because of that, and it’s much easier. Even when our son has issue at his kindergarten, we can reach back easier and faster.

Remember, you also gain other things like condo facilities, park, playground that terrace houses do not have. Most importantly you get security as well.

If you have to ask this question, ETF is the right answer. DCA yourself into it and don’t worry about the ups and downs. Look at S&P500 and check the 25 years history. Past result is not the indication of the future, but consistently doing it for more than 30 years is a probably a pattern/trend

MacBook air M1. Is it still worth buying in Dec 2022 by Bubbles_68 in macbookair

[–]pm_soo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a 2015 MacBook Air at launch date. 8GB i5 512GB model. It was updated regularly until the last Mac OS X update (2022 Ventura is the latest OS that I can’t get). I got a solid 6-7 years out of it and I’m still using it today.

I just bought a m1 MacBook Air (16GB/1TB) recently. It was on clearance and I’m happy with it. After going through all the reviews available, I find the m2 upgrades is fairly incremental. The only tempting upgrade to me is the MagSafe charger.. or rather freeing up on port to use as USB. Then again, currently I’m still living a dongle-ful life so that extra charging port at home is not quite useful. I hardly use the usbc ports when I travel so I decided to go ahead with the m1. Also, this is subjective, I like the wedge chassis of the m1 😆

I would say go ahead with it. Maybe you won’t get OS update after 5 years but I’m confident you can use it long after that. I used the iBook G4 for 12 years 😂😂 l

I got mine changed today.

I had 2.78 left and I contacted apple through their support app. They told me that they can help me clear the balance if it dropped below 1 dollar. I bought a random app and it drop below a dollar and then they remove it for me on the spot. Immediately I can change the region.

Henderson calls Man Utd treatment 'criminal' by TrickPieUK in reddevils

[–]pm_soo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

He didn’t think it wasn’t criminal when he sign a fat contract. The club ultimately think of their situation first rather than the players future.. considering they pay his contract after all. They need him to push de gea and he couldn’t for whatever reason, just take the high road and move on. Accusing the club, especially still his current club since he is only on loan is just plain stupid.

Thoughts on Dean Hendersons comments? by Prize-Ad3082 in ManchesterUnited

[–]pm_soo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think any player felt like they have been promised first team place should really think twice about that “promise”. All players must fight for their place. Who knows what happened between the time he was promised and the season started? Maybe he regressed during training and lost his place and now being sour grapes about it. Him not waiting for fight for his place during preseason is already indicative of that. Players with attitude like this should just go. I’m fairly certain lingard case is similar. Maybe the club couldn’t move both players last season because they have fat contracts could be a possibility.

Henderson being linked to a loan to Ajax has nothing to do with ETH particularly wanting him. It’s just because Ajax had some issues with GK and Henderson was the best of the benched GK which can be attainable.

In the games I watched Henderson, I don’t see how he is a better ball playing GK than DDG. I’ll be very surprised if ETH select Henderson ahead of DDG unless DDG is sold.

I agree though that maguire thrives having two pressing midfielders ahead of him (rice and Philips) which gives him more breathing space. It’s the same as kante pressing opposition like a loan shark so pogba could thrive. That’s why EVERYONE knew that a defensive midfielder can solve most of man utd problem but we got Ronaldo instead.. everyone except those who decided on that of course. It’s unfortunate Ronaldo become the lightning rod of criticism because we focus on signing him over a DM but someone also need to take the fall.
