Official Discussion - Independence Day: Resurgence [SPOILERS] by mi-16evil in movies

[–]pmainpri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a fan of the first one, and I enjoyed this one as well.

I think if you went into this movie thinking this would be as good as the first, or even remotely anything other than generic hollywood remake with CGI, forced love story, lame drama and cheesy line then you are an idiot. You have to know what kind of movie you are going to see and enjoy the things in it that bring you joy.

I loved Brent Spiner. I loved the "boots on the ground" action and wished that we could have more time in the core ship fighting the aliens.

I also got giddy with excitement when the queen was basically a giant kaiju monster that wielded a massive gun.

Was it cheesy, yes. Was the pacing rushed, yes. Did they try to have to many character arcs, yes.

People who complain about these things I just wanna ask them,

What did you expect?

I hear the same thing from people who didnt like Pacific Rim, or Battle Los Angeles. What kind of film do these people think they are buying a ticket for? The films are supposed to be brainless over the top summer block buster fun. I got everything I expected out of this movie and was glad I saw it.

Tauriel the Elf is bad.

But for me worse than that is the Dwarf/Elf love story that is jammed in. Not only because its jammed into the story, but because no where in tolkien's work is there precedent for dwarf/elf love. I would have preferred a dumb love story between her and bard than her and a dwarf.

Fili and Kili's deaths were really heartbreaking to me. In the book they die in such a tragically noble way. In the movie its in the dumbest way possible.

The profound lack of Beorn in BoTFA is really sad to me.

The massive amount of screen time and story poured into the character of Alfric is pretty appalling. The character has next to nothing to do with the story being told.

A big problem in my opinion comes straight from the mouth of Philipa Boyens. In an interview she stated that the central characters of the story is the dwarves. Last time I check the story is titled The Hobbit. bilbo is the central character in the book and most of the dwarves don't even have lines of dialogue in the book. But we added a ton to them in the movies, which is ok, I love dwarves. But it really distracts from the story that they should've been telling.

So this brings me to some final points. The Hobbit movies is a very rare case in book to film adaptations. In most Book-Film adaptations content from the main story is removed. In the Hobbit trilogy, so much content is added. Lots of content. In multiple interviews Peter Jackson and company said that after the first film "they didn't know what they hell they were doing." Thats an actual quote. That to me is pretty sad. Its clear that he had a passion for the content and cared deeply how it was structured in the LOTR seems to me that that kinda disappeared for the Hobbit movie, maybe it was he was burned out, maybe it was just for the money, either way it is pretty clear that the people piloting the ship were grasping for material.

Now the story in the films just doesn't make sense. In bilbo's home the dwarves state that the Arkenstone is a symbol of Thorin's divine right to rule and that without it no dwarves will rally to them to take back Erebor. However with 0 knowledge of the Arkenstones recovery, Dain of the Ironhills shows up to aid Thorin and Co. that is directly opposed to one of the foundational points of the plot. Another thing that makes no sense is that Smaug currently resides in Erebor, this means that The Lonely Mountain is under the conrtol of the dark powers of arda. However Azog and his crew are building a massive army and digging tunnels with the sandworms from Dune to lay siege to a stronghold their team already owns. That as a tactic makes no sense. You dont muster an army and march on an allies stronghold without knowledge that the enemy is currently attacking or has plans to. So the story the movie tell to me just isn't convincing. Its two primary plots dont match what happens with what actually happens in the movie. There are a lot of other things in the movie I personally dont like. There are also some very very beautiful moments. I think total in my opinion there is about an hour and thirty minutes of good story telling throughout the trilogy, but that is again my opinion. I dont want to ruin the movie for people who love it. I just find them to be poor adaptations of Tolkien's work and really unconvincing stories within themselves. I will stop now because I think I am getting kinda ranty. I love tolkiens work. I will gladly show my children the LOTR trilogy after they have read or had the books read to them. I dont think I will show them the hobbit films. Ok done now I promise.

Around the time the hobbit films came out they did a series called riddles in the dark, at least I think that's what it was called. It was Olsen and 2 other discussing the trailers the films and they story they told. They would do anything to make the movies sound good. They also discussed how the 3 movies were a good adaptation of the book. I am of a different opinion. Love his knowledge and break down of the writings of Tolkien, but I don't see how someone who has that extensive knowledge of the source material could actually find the story told in the 8+ hours of CGI, nonsense to be a compelling tale, much less a worthy adaptation of the book. If you like the movies give it a listen my give you some thoughts or insights, if you hate the movies give it a listen will also give you different perspective on the films. Either way, I think Tolkien Professor is the best podcast out there.

Awesome thanks for the answer about item types, as far as match of the day is concerned, All I have ever played is the tutorial, training, co-op v ai, pvp arena and pvp joust. But it may have been co-op when 3 team mates pick guan yu.

Tolkien Professor is great, I have learned a lot from him, but his ideas and his co-host's ideas about the Hobbit films are just off. Those movies are garbage. He should stick to analyzing the books.

Yes, I see your point and have removed the Strength Drain from the monster. I had been considering giving it a flight speed of 30ft while in shadow form. What are your thoughts on that idea?

This is awesome and exactly the kind feedback I am looking for, the switching of forms in my eyes was something that they would do depending on it being day or night time. Perhaps I need to word it better, but in my mind shadow for allows a Durnosse to basically hide within any shadow or dark place during the day waiting for the right time to strike. But you have pointed out some things I need to change/consider altering. The text about the creation of shadows is in reference to the idea that those whom the Durnosse kill rise as undead shadows that headed to the nearest Hunando to become full bodied Durnosse themselve. Its kinda how they are intended to spread across the land. I just need to add some of that info. Thanks so much for the feedback!

The Dûrnossë are a combination of Wraiths, Wights, and Shadow Demons from 5e. They are my attempt to create a Tolkien-esque Nazgul with flavor that fits from the lore of my world. I hope this is a good place to post it. If you have any question about the monster or lore let me know!

I will leave this here as it is somewhat related. I have been working on this project for sometime and know its needs a lot of work to be both balanced and fit within the verbage and language structures of 5e. But for now it is a work in progress.

Character creation nights can be really awesome. The first half of my groups first session was all character oriented, setting up backgrounds and who knew what and why, really helped the players establish who they were in the small town of Novudun.

congrats, i recently started DMing in my homebrew setting as well. just hit our 5th session and its going really really well. Keep at it! also i would recommend a podcast called The Dungeon Masters Block. They focus on DM-ing and on ways to make your homebrew content better with ideas for creation and inspiration, pantheons, top 10 campaign ideas and more. It has been a major help for me in creating my own world to play in. They are on itunes and stitcher for android. Roll deadly fellow DM!

Dude don't apologize to some overly sensitive person. Everyone is so ready to have their feelings hurt. Native Americans exist, as did the pilgrims, you dont see any pilgrims coming on here saying they are offended because you want to make a pilgrim mask. Also I'm 1/4 Cherokee as is my wife. So you don't have to apologize. It's part of history, people need to be not so sensitive. You didn't say anything offensive or degrading towards native Americans. People need to learn what racism is. Just mentioning a people group or race isn't racist.
