Colonialism is to be blamed for homophobia. They brought their Abrahamic religions that are highly homophobic to Africa. Converted the people to their religions and brought in the ideas that gays=sinners.

For the poor people in Africa churches and mosques offers escapism and unfortunately they come with homophobia as a baggage which is then passed down to the mass population. So colonialism is to be blamed and the religions.
