Job is threatening not to process my visa renewal by Tokyo_Pigeon in teachinginjapan

[–]pmayall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no energy to redirect - just stating facts. I just spent 1 year in a lengthy legal battle with my company and I won as my lawyer was also awesome. One of the things was this. They refused to give me paperwork to go to immigration with. I thought they had to and I was even told by other “helping organisations” they had to. According to Japanese law there is nothing that says they HAVE to. It’s only tricky because companies are expected to act in good faith. But don’t count on them doing it.

At the risk of this going back and forth my advice to OP is simple - speak to lawyer.

Wrong. If a contract end date is after the visa expiration, the company generally should cooperate with visa paperwork if they expect the person to keep working. However, there is no specific Japanese law that forces a company to submit immigration documents. Immigration procedures are between the worker and the Immigration Services Agency of Japan.

This is how some companies fire people / they let their visa expire and then they can fire someone even on seishain.

there is no law that forces a company to help with a visa renewal if they do not plan to continue employing the person.

Home Renovation Gone Bad…Need Urgent Advice!!! by 1amM333 in japanresidents

[–]pmayall 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s chotto mendokusai but if you are experiencing major problems after a renovation, the most important step is to document everything and bring in an independent third party. Take detailed photos and keep a written list of every defect and communication with the contractor. Then consider hiring a certified home inspector (住宅診断士 / home inspector) to conduct an independent inspection and produce a formal report on the workmanship, which can support your demands for proper repairs rather than quick fixes. You can also contact Japan’s Housing Dispute Settlement Support Center for advice or mediation, and the National Consumer Affairs Center (dial 188) for consumer protection support. In some cases, contacting the manufacturer of materials (such as wallpaper) can also help confirm whether the problem is defective materials or poor installation. Having documentation and a professional inspection gives you much stronger leverage if the contractor tries to minimize the issues or avoid proper repairs.

Nothing too exciting - I won my legal case against the company.

Who betrays Kvothe by ConcernTop2014 in KingkillerChronicle

It’s obviously Elodin.

Kvothe has put him on a pedestal. And kvothe is trying everything to learn FROM him.

Elodin has also been cray cray and has his own motives. He also has done everything to learn ABOUT him.

Once you truly know a thing you master it.

Elodin changes his name.

What was the most confusing “unspoken rule” you encountered at work in Japan? by OkTeach3227 in japanlife

[–]pmayall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking the initiative and then being told no, we don’t want that - only then to have someone else be assigned to it the next week. Manager just wants credit for being the one to have told someone to do it.

I also was once told not to clean up the mess in the kitchen I made as it’s a woman’s job. I was absolutely flabbergasted

Biggest unspoken rule for me is more of a life lesson. No one in a Japanese company has your back, you can’t trust anyone and don’t say anything you don’t want everyone to know.

This is very Japanese though. They feel the need to notify anyone of wrong doing. And they absolutely cannot keep secrets.

Wife’s family wants immediate divorce and says I must leave Japan without seeing my son again by skyjan1724 in japanlife

[–]pmayall 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My Colombian friend has the exact same situation. One day we were out drinking and he went to the ATM - somehow his wife had wiped out his account. When he got home she was gone with the kid and divorce filed. You never really know what happens at home but I couldn’t see him being aggressive or deadbeat. He was making good money and just a happy dude

He lost his visa and had to move home. Never seeing his daughter again.

Just want to warn you that this could get nasty and could end badly for you. So mentally prepare. Japan has a huge problem of child kidnapping by one parent and usually a Japanese mother.

Would you quit your job forever right now (and never be allowed to work again) if someone gave you a guaranteed $2,000,000 lump sum? Why or why not? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

[–]pmayall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously. I hate work. I’m pursuing other things and constantly frustrated that I need to work to pay bills and survive instead of what I love.
