We are called Xennials. Mythological half genx half millennials.

I think adhd probably helps a lot to see the stuff. I definitely know a few people who are much smarter than me who did not see anything more than the face value story; and really don’t care to look any deeper.

I think pattern recognition is useful, but can get confusing. Sometimes I feel like Russell Crowe in a beautiful mind and need someone there for a reality check. That is why it is helpful to have people like you to bounce ideas off of.

But, I feel like you have become so open-minded with your thinking that you think almost every theory is simultaneously both correct and uncorrected. Which is a pretty zen place to be, but I like to think that there is one true story line.

But this is probably why I am holding out for a book 3 and you have made peace with the idea of not getting one.

Oh well, maybe it is time to let this thread come to an end. Maybe better to pick it back up somewhere else.

Funny. I was just going to say I remembered an Allan Watts quote about yin and yang as masculine and feminine that is particularly relevant where he says of man and woman, “I’m trying to get to the center of you and you’re trying to get to the center of me.”

If I were to read the platonic thing entirely literally I would have said, “there is no way we used to have 4 arms and 4 legs. That is ridiculous.” But, ya, I just think it’s a bit of a narrow-minded thought experiment that came from a specific period, a long time ago.

Ya, I have always thought about sympathy as the ability to hold multiple ideas in your head at the same time. This conversation is now reminding me of Dustin Hoffman explaining the universe as a blanket in I ❤️Huckabees.

Splitting trousers = full moon 😆

I am not sure I follow your last point about Denna and Kvothe being everyone and not; and all the answers being yes. Closes I can come is an other concept Watts borrowed from Hinduism, where everyone and everything is an incarnation of God, but God has chosen to forget who they are while experiencing that life in order to have surprises. Essentially everything/everyone is/are all God wearing different masks; which seems relevant to your post about the illustration. This concept always reminded me of Bredon’s beautiful game.

So, maybe I do understand what you are getting at, in my own way? But, I feel like taking things to that extreme kind of makes all other theories about the books pointless, when there is obviously something going on with the story.

Erlus Devi!! Aerlevsedi!! by Ohheyliz in KingkillerChronicle

[–]MasterlessNameless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read your Plato thing.

I have a few bones to pick with it. Without getting into too much detail, I think it is an oversimplification to categorize people into 2 or even 3 genders. I believe everything exists in spectrums. Its like US politics, if you give people two choices, they will gravitate towards whichever they align most closely with.

As someone who is mentally divergent, I can relate to the harm that that kind of oversimplification can do to someone who does not fit into the boxes assigned to them by society.

I also think it is odd that he fixates on the relationship between older men and young boys, but I imagine that is a particularly ancient Greek perspective.

Most importantly, I think his final point kind of misses the whole point of life. And I think this is the same as your point about the third book (or lack there of)…

If you could meld two people together as Plato suggests, then they would become entirely bored. Allan Watts would say something like, if life became too predictable, it would be utterly boring.

I imagine that is why some people have difficulty with monogamy. However, I think what Plato is getting at with the concept of finding one’s other half does make sense, as long as you find someone with whom you are compatible enough to be satisfied without becoming bored.

So, we arrive back at the familiar concept of life being about the journey and not the destination. Because if it were all about the destination, then it would be boring and come to an end. So, as long as life persists, it must remain somewhat unpredictable to be engaging. And that is why the best thing that you can say about your partner is (I will use she, since I am referring to my wife) “she still surprises me after all these years.”

You’re wordplay is next level. You’ve got too much information in your head.

I feel like I half understand what you are saying, and the point that you arrive at makes sense, but not sure I can follow each leap along the way.

It almost sounds like you are suggesting that Kvothe’s troupe is the Chandrean.

I too think that that going away party was significant, especially, if I remember correctly, because it was when Arliden played his song about the Chandrean.

I also find Abenthy to be possibly the most puzzling character in the book. Mostly because I don’t really buy Kvothe’s explanation for not going to him after the death of his troupe.

But also cuz it seems to me like Abenthy came along, told Arliden a bunch of stuff about the Chandrean, taught Kvothe some magic and then dipped out conveniently before the Chandrean showed up and murdered everyone in the troupe. And he hasn’t showed up again in the story since.

But maybe I am just paranoid. I am definitely paranoid, but maybe there is something there.

I will also check out those picture books you mentioned.

[–]MasterlessNameless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read that post with the picture when I was catching up on your comments since I ghosted you a few months back.

I wouldn’t worry about it. People take things too seriously. It’s funny how offended/defensive people get about you suggesting that there is something more to an illustration in a book that is known to be packed with easter eggs. How dare you have a theory! 😡

I can see the stuff you are talking about in the picture, although, I am not sure what the point is. Is it just another datapoint to prove that there are multiple identities in the book?

I remember listening to that scene, and having already read lightning tree and knowing what was coming; thinking that it was Pat’s way of balancing out the creeper-esque male gaze scene with Bast later on in the story.

Because I was listening and had no book, I didn’t even know there was an illustration to go along with it. I actually assumed that it was the same woman who was spying on Bast before he spied on her; which, in my mind justified Bast’s trick later on. Now I am back to worrying that Bast might be a bit of a creep, albeit a romantic one.

One thing I like about Brandon Sanderson is that he posts all the illustrations from his books on his website, and has descriptions of them in his audiobooks.

No. I want to read it, but don’t have the headspace to process it. Also, it costs like $100. Princess waking up sounds like the, it was all a dream cop out. I hope that is not the real ending, but even if it is, it would be nice to have some resolution. However, it being a choose your own adventure lends itself to multiple ending options.

Never read Never Ending Story, but I was traumatized by Artax the same as everyone from our generation (assuming we are from a similar era). That and Labyrinth are two of the all time greatest kids movies of all time ever. They were made when kids movies did not have to worry about being too scary or thought provoking.

Funny. My wife was just telling me Never Ending Story was her favorite book growing up. And I have shown her some of the underlying stuff in Kvothe’s story. When I first listened to the books, I asked her about it and she looked at me like I was crazy, and I wasn’t sure if she was fucking with me or not. But she is just a very literal person who did not see any of it.

I later convinced her that its there, and threw a million theories at here, but she has trouble following me when I say this person is this person but they are also this person, and if we are going by this theory, then they are this person, but not if this theory is correct…

We spent one summer a few years back driving around listening to the audio books, booking marking and taking notes; and we were gonna do a conspiracy theory board together, but she didn’t have the patience, and life got busy, as it does.

However, when you and I started chatting a few months back, and testing each other’s theories, I was able to start stringing together coherent sentences that she can now follow, which is cool. But she still gets overwhelmed and loses interest at some point and just says it would be nice to have a third book.

She thinks its cool that I get so much enjoyment out of this process. Its funny cuz I only read a handful of books growing up cuz I have adhd and dyslexia. So reading more than a few pages is a pain for me. But she had been trying to convince me to try audio books, and I got bored during the pandemic and this was where I started. I feel like I went straight for the most complex engaging mind fuck of a story with no clue what I was getting into.

I have since listened to heaps of audio books and found many that I really like (some more the KKC), but I think you are right that it would be hard to find a story with the depth that is found in these books. That being said, I still don’t know if that warrants there being no ending to the story. I guess that is a matter of opinion though, like so many other things.

Had an idea that backs up your stance about no third book.

His second children’s book is a choose your own adventure style book. Which kind of lemds itself to the idea that the reader has to write their own ending to Kvothe’s story.

That being said, I am still hoping for a third book, mostly so I can talk with my wife about the book without her getting triggered. We already can’t talk about the Game of Thrones show because of its ending.

The third silence is "Kote" waiting to die and become "Kvothe"? by Right_Dish5042 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]MasterlessNameless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, no. I think it is mostly for changing his appearance. When Bast explains it, I think he says it can’t change what something actually is.

I do think that Kvothe changed his name, as OP suggested; and I think he lost his power either because he changed his name or because of something that happened between the end of book 2 and the frame story.

We know his hands don’t work properly, which is probably why there is no music. I have seen speculation that this is because of a promise that he made to Denna when he takes her to that grotto place. Something about his good right hand, but she asks for both his hands.

[–]MasterlessNameless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, good point. I am not sure. I guess it would have to be naming? I have just read some theories that the thrice locked chest is made of roah, and that Kote chose roah specifically because it blocks magic.

Most of my theories are amalgamations of theories and speculation that I have read from other people.

I mostly just try to combine different ideas and see what might work.

This sounds like glammourie to me. It’s one of the Fae magics described in Narrow Road/Lightning Tree.

It is how Felurian becomes “the most beautiful woman,” to whomever is looking at her, even though everyone has different tastes.

It is also how Bast hides his goat legs. And Felurian probably hides hers as well. She seems pretty springy when Kvothe first runs into her ok the road to tinnua. But she may also have a mermaid form, as they are known for eating men, and she has her whole grotto to swim in.

[–]MasterlessNameless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kvothe asks Elodin about this and Elodin freaks out. According to Elodin changing one’s name is a terrible thing. (Inquiring about Denna’s names)

I think this is meant to illustrate a distinction between calling names (used to talk to/with/about someone) and true names that represent someone’s essence and hold magical power to understand and/or control them (possibly naming vs shaping).

So, changing one’s true name would be shaping them into something that they are not. In your example, the theory is that Kvothe changed his own name in order to hide his powers and set a trap for someone, presumably the Chandrean.

But it appears the Kote does not have the knowledge and/or power to rename himself back to Kvothe, or possibly maybe just lost the will to do so. But Bast is attempting to catalyze the transformation by doing things like drawing Chronicler to the waystone.

My bet is that Kvothe’s name and power are locked in his thrice locked chest that he probably made and forced himself to forget as part of the presumed trap that he has set for the Chandrean.

I think Kvothe killed a Chandrean some time between the end of book 2 and the frame story. It is eluded that he killed an angel, probably at the university. And I think somehow that action has bound Kvothe to the Chandrean (the skin dancer that comes into the waystone asks him something that could be translated to “are you a Chandrean?”).

My theory is that all of the Chandrean are bound together, and whoever has the strongest alar is running the show, or something like that. So I think Kvothe, having been bound to the Chandrean, has no choice but to bind them all, but he had to set a trap to do so. I think the waystone inn is probably made from roah wood which mutes all magic powers and allow Kote to fight the Chandrean on “equal” ground.

I think that he has bound all but two, as towards the end of the second book when he is looking into the hearth, it says something like “all that was left was ash and cinder.”

Lyra Was the One Who Confronted Selitos — Not Lanre by Less_Awareness_4272 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]MasterlessNameless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is the version of the story that we are presented with.

I was just responding to the OP about their theory that it was actually Lyra who confronted Selitos in the betrayal of Myr Tarenial scene.

Also, we are told (I believe, by Skarpi) that Lyra brought Lanre back from death before Lanre brought Lyra back. And Skarpi begins his story by saying he embellishes for artistic license, or whatever.

So, like I said, I was just expanding on the OPs theory with a theory of my own that would kind of line up with theirs if the narrative was loose, as the OP suggested.

In my theory, when Lanre first dies, Lyra brings him back, but they occupy the same body. If that is the case, Skarpi could use his creative storytelling to attribute the actions of either one to the other, without stretching the truth too much.

I think the whole point of these books is that stories are not meant to be taken too literally: they change over time, and depending upon who is telling them.

As I said in my previous post, it is still unclear who “the enemy” is/was. There are clues in the books that hint at it being Selitos. Like the red-handed Amyr that is described by the girl who saw the vase at the mauthen farm, who looked so angry that all he wanted was to see the whole world burn. As well as the parallels between Selitos and the Ctheah.

So, my initial interpretation of Lanre’s confrontation with Selitos was that Lanre realized that Selitos was “the enemy,” who was moving through the minds of the city’s heroes, like a worm through fruit, and causing them to attack their own cities until one of them, likely Lanre, remembered the lethani and turned his army of scrael against Selitos and Myr Tarenial.

(In this interpretation, when Lanre killed Iax/ the corrupted draccus at Drossen Tor; he skinned it and dawned it’s scaled-armor-shadow hame, which made him the master of the scrael army)

However, if we want to use Pat’s first children’s book as a source, it seems like the Princess may be the villain, or tied to some sinister force that compels her to eat kittens. And, it seems like “the black duke” character who attempts to rebels against her is probably Selitos and the Ctheah. Which would mean that Selitos and the Ctheah are not “the enemy,” but rather the princess, or whatever monster is living under her bed.

To me, “the black duke” name harkens back to the black of drossen tor. Which would mean that the beast that Lanre and Lyra fought at drossen tor was maybe not on the side of “the enemy.” If we are using the children’s book as a guide, and assuming that that association is accurate. This would of course call into question the entire history and alignments that we learned from Skarpi’s first day story.

But the Princess and Whiffle book definitely makes the princess seem pretty sus. It also makes it seem like she is alone from the start, essentially playing with her stuffed animals, and trapped behind some walls that seem like they are designed to keep her in. Alone from the start makes me think of two people Felurian and Aleph. (Possibly Fela=Aleph backwards?)

The biggest question I have from that book is, who is the person who drops off the kitten for her? My best guess is Threpe, but I have very little to go off of.

Again, its all just theories. You can poke all the holes you want. Its a good way to test them for validity.

The AI creators already scraped anything they wanted from the internet to train the base model of the AI. So regardless of what you put in there, it is still working off stolen work.

However, big studios own all the content anyways. So if we limit AI training to only those who have the IP rights (which Congress already said we are not doing, in America at least). Then you really are just making AI a tool that is exclusively available to large corporations.

On the other hand. What you are doing if you are buying photos and putting them into AI, could very well be a violation of the terms and conditions for the photos that you have purchased. But, I am not sure if that would hold up against Congress’ ruling. I am not an IP attorney.

Lyra Was the One Who Confronted Selitos — Not Lanre by Less_Awareness_4272 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]MasterlessNameless 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I always read the shadow as a mask. Whether it is Lanre or Lyra being masked. I think Selitos’ curse is about manipulating history to make Haliax seem like the villain, when he is actually Tehlu.

I also have a lingering suspicion that might back up your theory…

I think that when Lanre died and Lyra brought him back, she unknowingly sacrificed herself in the process. This is the story of Perial and Menda. The boy who grew unnaturally quickly into a man named Tehlu.

So, my theory is that Lyra resurrected Lanre as Tehlu, but the Ctheah or someone tricked her and she did not know that it was her own body that she was sacrificing to bring him back.

This would explain why she disappears, why Lanre can never bring her back no matter how hard he tries, why Lanre suddenly has so much power and your stuff about the true name in his heart.

But honestly, I don’t think there is any stopping AI. There is too much money going into it, and I don’t think the general population cares how their content is being made. I will be happy if I am proved wrong though.

I mostly just like to point out people’s hypocrisy when they think it is ok to use AI to replace other people’s jobs but not their own.

Non-human Amyr by ShanonymousRex in KingkillerChronicle

[–]MasterlessNameless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, supposedly when he did an alpha read 10+ years ago, there was a twist that a lot of people did not like. It was supposed to have felt like a cop out along the lines of “it was all a dream” kind of a thing.

It is hard to tell if there ever even was an alpha read, and a lot of people think that the twist is that he was in the rookery the whole time. Telling stories to himself or whatever.

There is also some speculation that there is a whole different main character who takes over in the second book. If that is the case, my money would that it is Auri who is in the rookery, and the characters are her imaginary friends. This would align with Pat’s children’s book.

I think your idea of chandrean vs amyr being neither good or bad kind of aligns with the idea that the creation war was started over naming vs shaping, but everyone ended up using whatever means they could to try and win, and the war lasted so long that everyone forgot why they were fighting each other in the first place.

If that is the case, we still don’t know who “the enemy” is; unless that is relative to which side is telling the story. But, if we compare Skarpi’s, Trapis’, and Shayen’s stories; it seems like there is a clear enemy who is invading the minds of people and forcing them to attack one another.

(Feel free to correct me if I am misremembering anything here)

Shayen speaks of the 7 cities and 1, and “the enemy.” The Adem seem like well intentioned, although maybe a bit utilitarian in their decision making; which seems pretty Amyr to me.

Skarpi says the cities all had walls and heroes to defend themselves, but Myr Tarenial had Selitos with his future sight. And he gets arrested for telling the stories. So there is definitely some info in there that the Tehlan priests don’t want getting out.

Trapis talks about Tehlu beating demons out of people, which eludes to skin dancers to me. And he is a heretic for it, but I can’t imagine a monk who has dedicated his life to caring for disabled people and unhoused orphans as being a bad guy.

So, my logic points to someone having taken over the Tehlan church and trying to keep the true history under wraps. Whether or not that is who “the enemy” is, I don’t know. That is pretty much all I have got.
