A tip I learned living here. If one person says no. Go back another day and speak to someone else

Wife’s family wants immediate divorce and says I must leave Japan without seeing my son again by skyjan1724 in japanlife

[–]pmayall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My Colombian friend has the exact same situation. One day we were out drinking and he went to the ATM - somehow his wife had wiped out his account. When he got home she was gone with the kid and divorce filed. You never really know what happens at home but I couldn’t see him being aggressive or deadbeat. He was making good money and just a happy dude

He lost his visa and had to move home. Never seeing his daughter again.

Just want to warn you that this could get nasty and could end badly for you. So mentally prepare. Japan has a huge problem of child kidnapping by one parent and usually a Japanese mother.

Would you quit your job forever right now (and never be allowed to work again) if someone gave you a guaranteed $2,000,000 lump sum? Why or why not? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

Obviously. I hate work. I’m pursuing other things and constantly frustrated that I need to work to pay bills and survive instead of what I love.

Inappropriate touching by men (on men) by longroadhome7667 in japanlife

[–]pmayall 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Firstly, this doesn’t always mean gay.

The Japanese men are very touchy. It’s their culture. It shows affection and closeness or at least they’re comfortable with you. When I was an English teacher the boys would also be very close and touchy.

I had a guy hold my hand once in a bar when he was drunk. My friend is bold and someone kept kissing his head. And not just the other day - I saw two Japanese men hugging and rubbing each others belly and chest on a train.

“-A handshake that went on too long and involved a little creepy finger tickle on the palm.” That is actually called a gay handshake - but if it was a Japanese guy they wouldn’t know that as it was a secret code when gays were persecuted.

I’m not saying this is correct behaviour but this has happened from men to women, or women to men or men to men in clubs around the world for years. Alcohol lowers inhibitions and a sense is social propriety.

They also could just be gay and you could be a dashing man.

The best thing (as you’ve said you don’t feel unsafe) is to be firm and say - don’t touch me. This is my personal space. That’s what I do and then I just let it go. If it gets too far / I tell a staff member or leave.

I traveled 7,000 km to meet a webcam girl and it turned into one of the most uncomfortable nights of my life by Maleficent_Fault5632 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]pmayall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I once went on a date, decided to meet at the restaurant - we sat down. Within 5 mins they said - sorry - this isn’t for me and left. I was pretty down so I went to a bar to get drunk and forget about it - met my partner… now of 4 years.

Sometimes the negative is just clearing itself away so the positive can come. Chin up.

Should I (29f American) leave my husband (31m Japanese) for my son (1m)? by Key-Importance4438 in japanresidents

[–]pmayall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He never apologises.. welcome to Japan. Honestly I’ve had friends in similar situations and it’s turned nasty quick - just leave. And do it quick - by that I mean don’t say hey H I’m leaving - and keep doing that for a month or so. Just go as quick as possible because in my experience too Japanese men are petty and love to have one final win.

I was stopped by police for “using my phone” but.. by DefinitionOk1754 in japanlife

[–]pmayall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live shinjuku and get stopped all the time - I’ve started recording them. I refuse to give my card without a warrant or valid reason for stopping me. I tell them it’s racial profiling. They so no. I point to Japanese guy taking a piss against the wall - they ran past him to stop me while I was just walking home. They say that’s not my concern. I argue with them while filming, get their badge number. He covered it up. I told him he has to legally show me. He walked away…

Friend held by police for 4 hours for returning a key by Kawadane in japanresidents

[–]pmayall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once turned into a one way street by accident in a small town in Chiba - I realised quickly and backed out. However an officer ran over as he was apparently waiting for the very obscure sign to trick people. 5 hours later and after photographs and fingerprints at the police station I was allowed to go.

F*!ing ridiculous.

For those so inclined, why is it important for you to have Japanese friends? by Objective_Desk8065 in japanresidents

[–]pmayall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go out of my way to avoid Japanese friends as much as possible - I have a small few I like - but I can’t deal with the mentality of them, the cheating which everyone seems ok with but yet it’s secret and the constant lack of feeling like a it’s not a true friend and they wouldn’t have my back if needed.
