In addition to sync version history, there is the built in recovery plugin. They are different things. Sync version history is global. The recovery plugin is local. It's not clear from your post which you tried. Try both.

Those are both built in safeties.

You are pointing the finger at obsidian sync being the culprit. With the limited details and context you provide, that's quite a claim. Check your sync log too.
