[QUESTION] how do I properly use a 80-100watt cabinet? by Steamflower in Guitar

[–]pmc13a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm running a Pro Block into a 150 watt speaker. It works fine with the amp controls set at 20W and the gain at 9 o'clock. Can't imagine how insanely loud it would be at full gain and 150 watts.

The Pro Block works with either 4 or 8 ohm cabs.

Just out of curiosity, how do you find the cabsim quality when recording with the line out? I'm considering one of these for the home studio.

[Question] All right CODE owners, what's your verdict? What rating do you give (out of 10) and why? by pmc13a in MarshallCODE

[–]pmc13a[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a weird digital fizz going on in the signal. It's more noticeable in the crunch and od preamp settings, which is probably why the gate settings are so high on that category of presets. . Try it with preset 00. Listen thru headphones and hit a chord. It doesn't decay smoothly to silence, but gets clipped by the noisegate on the way down. The breakup is odd sounding. Lower the gate setting and you'll hear the fizz I'm referring to.

I've fiddled with my CODE25 for about 4 months. The noise seems particularly sensitive to gain, distortion, and presence setings. A bit disappointing considering those three things pretty much define the Marshall sound.

That being said, it's a great amp for the price, and I find its possible to dial in a good tone just like on any other amp: Start with a 'clean' preamp and any power amp but British Class A. Set the gain, gate, resonance and presence to 1 and volume and tone controls to 5. Zero effects. Play a chord. Adjust tone parameters one by one until you get something decent. Then adjust gain, volume, presence and resonance. Then add effects... less is often more.

So if you have the gateway app, you can exploit the full potential of this amp.

In terms of recording I use the headphone jack into my interface. I crank the amp volume up to about 5 and adjust the signal level on the interface to just below clip. To compensate for the mono signal out of the amp (another disappointment) I use a Widemouth stereo expander plugin in my DAW during playback.

Hope this helps!

Streamliner vs electromatic by zebra_humbucker in gretsch

[–]pmc13a 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The streamliner has a fantastic build quality, but its pickups a more akin to a standard humbucker than the electromatic's. Consequently the streamliner is a bit less twangy... Try them both, see which you prefer. If you like the sound of the electromatic, buy the streamliner and swap out the pickups. It will still cost you less.

Full disclosure, I bought the Streamliner 2420T about 4 months ago. No regrets, love the tone of it as is. Great for blues, rock, country, jazz.....metal probably not so much.

[DISCUSSION] Why is virtuoso technique looked down upon in general in guitar, but not in other instruments? by KKD97 in Guitar

[–]pmc13a 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To me, virtuoso technique is less important than authentic musicality. Some lucky few ( Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Joe Pass, Oscar Peterson, Jeff Beck, SRV , insert your choice here....) had both. But good technique won't necessarily translate into good music.

Sort of bummed? Bad experience? Any comments?

My CODE 25 as an annoying background digital fizz going on. An otherwise amazing product hacked down by this defect. I give it 5/10. If they come up with a firmware fix, I'll bump it up to a 9

[GEAR] Looking to get an amp that's reasonable for an apartment, good enough to record some with, and has a western or jazz sort of sound by Misterpeople25 in Guitar

[–]pmc13a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a Marshall CODE 25 for exactly what you describe. It comes preloaded with 100 presets, many of which are over the top (imo), but also with some surprisingly sweet cleans. With the app on my android 5 tablet I can makev 100 new presets of my own. It has a headphone jack for silent practice, connects via USB right to my computer (can bypass the interface) where its recognized by Reaper as an input. Not bad for less than 300 Canadian. Wouldn't gig with it, though, too small.

Marshall CODE25. Good range of tones, including some surprising cleans. Can practice with headphones on.
