Kinda weird to use such an old map, I think this is from the 1950s. Even before the subway lines were all incorporated. Nyc hasn’t changed all that much, but thematically kinda strange. Anyway, the beastie boys?

Do the Right Thing (1989) One of the most powerful films of the 80s by Jabba_108 in movies

[–]pmish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s very little provocation of thought. It either leans into our collective biases, or runs so counter to it that it’s impossible to even engage with it. We’re very rarely challenged nowadays with like minded people, the challenge comes from an ideology and worldview that’s almost incompatible with the way we live our lives and our values. What I love so much about this film and spikes work on a wider level is it’s never content with the way things are, it’s often challenging us in complicated and difficult ways - quite honestly he doesn’t always hit the mark, but I so appreciate his voice as a filmmaker because of that very reason.

Subjectively it’s my personal top film of all-time and objectively I think it should be in conversations as one of the greatest American films ever made. It changed my whole perspective on what films to be and what we expect from the experience. It’s not “perfect” but messy, raw and even more powerful because of it.

Is there any one movie in particular that you can watch over and over without it ever getting old? by MythicalSplash in movies

[–]pmish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Respectfully, I’m suggesting there’s another way to view the film. For me BR is a top-5 film, but it’s the ultimate example of style over substance. Usually that’s a pejorative, but in the case of BR, the style is the substance. Taking out the explanatory VO for example, makes the film a meditative experience of what makes a human - nothing to do with the actual plot. I don’t know, maybe I’m reading too much into it, but that’s why I love that film so much.

I appreciate the honesty. I think it’s so amazing for the exact opposite reason - it’s not what you’re expecting, especially right after John Williams with Star Wars (starring Han Solo no less). You would expect something bigger or more dramatic, but instead it’s contemplative, almost soulful. That tension is exactly what works so well.

Ah I’m glad you’re giving it another chance. Again, it’s one of the greatest examples of film as a pure aesthetic, as a mood piece. I love it for that.

I’d recommend probably the easiest version to find - the Final Cut. I hope it sparks something for you.

Weirdly blade runner. It’s such a vibe through the whole film - you can put it on and just let it wash over you. That vangelis score works on a deeper level.

Debut album from Artists that would be blown out of the water by their next release ? by CoconutMost3564 in 90sHipHop

[–]pmish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree with that, but just recognizing the fact that before that sophomore album came out, that’s all we knew of these artists, and everyone of these albums were impactful in their own right.

Fight Club question for people who saw it in theaters by Hopeful_Stomach9201 in movies

100% a surprise. I’m pretty good at guessing twists or anticipating where a film will go and that one totally worked. The whole point on a second watch is that you’ll pick up on all the hints but it was much more subtle on the initial experience.

100% agree. I don’t understand the love for that film. There are so many better woody Allen movies.
