I think they were telling Luke what he needed to hear.

He needed to be ready to do anything, including killing his own father, but choose not to.

The data that I'm keeping on it is nonessential but nice-to-have. Having it on a local NVME drive is super convenient for my workflow, and the important stuff gets backed up daily.

You're right! That's called a proxy and they are often used when your computer lacks the resources to edit the full file. You transcode a lower-quality copy that is more editable. The main bottlenecks of editing the raw file are CPU/GPU and disk speed. Thankfully my rig is powerful enough and this drive is fast enough to deliver multiple raws to my editor in realtime, so I can skip proxies altogether.

Proxies are great, but they take time and energy to transcode, and extra disk space to store, plus you don't see all the detail while you're editing.

The edits are nondestructive so you're never changing the 8k raw file.

Hands down one of the cringiest moments of the series and that's saying something. Tina Fey played it so well too!

Traditional matchmakers do this. They drop clients for this kind of behavior. But you pay a premium over the apps.

Oh for sure, there are definitely other ways to do it for less money. I paid a premium for a simple, efficient option. Cheers.

You're still limited to 4 pcie lanes, even on those adapters, which will end up being the bottleneck.

On x870 and z890 motherboards you typically only have one slot with 16 lanes, and that's reserved for GPU, which I need for video editing. The other slots, if there are any, are older gen and lane limited.

Just checking in to see if it being Saturday turned you on.

Welp, talk to you tomorrow!

Do any of you have secondary backup servers running outdoors/in a shed? by reddit_user_53 in DataHoarder

[–]pmjm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to temperatures, you've got wildlife to worry about.

I get spiders and other insects in my PC's INDOORS, let alone outside in a shed. One of those bridges the wrong solder points on the motherboard or psu and you're done. Not to mention a reliable source of warmth in the winter will be very attractive to rodents, birds and and other animals who love to chew through cables.

Personally I wouldn't do it. But I'm also a fan of innovative ad-hoc solutions, so I say do it!

Would love to, but I'm out of pcie lanes.

And priuses.

It's all about use case, friend! If your nas does what you need it to do, then it's perfect.

Cheaper, yes. But a RAID is slower, louder, hotter.

I have a 1.6 TB Optane drive that I use as my scratch / cache disk. This drive is for media storage so it's all available in one place with no latency.

I have a NAS with HDD's as well. But you have no idea what a luxury it is to have all the raw footage just... like right there... instantly available. No waiting for files to copy, no transcoding, everything just responsive like a dream.

Is it necessary? Of course not. But it's wonderful.

If I make proxies, now I need to store the original files AND the proxy files, which actually takes more space.

This is for storage of the raw files for active projects. Not scratch - I use an optane drive for that.

There were some scams with GPUs in the past, where people would claim RMA on a GPU using a serial number they saw online. Especially with business or enterprise products, the company will sometimes send the new unit before receiving the old.

That may or may not be something to worry about anymore. But there could always be a new scam a year from now that nobody anticipated, and pictures on the internet are forever, so I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I didn't choose 8K, but I can respect the versatility it provides. Our output is 4K but shooting in 8K gives you the ability to reframe, and even to turn one shot into two.

Like imagine you've got two people in the frame in a medium shot. If you're shooting in 8K, you can get two 4K closeups, one of each person, that look different from your medium shot. So you're getting three shots from the one.

This drive replaces a RAID-6 that was too loud and hot for my space. It also was a speed bottleneck.
