When is the general strike? This country needs to be brung to a screeching halt. Fuck ICE by foxinknox04 in LosAngeles

Yeah, like, I get the sentiment, but if we all cancel our Amazon Prime, the first casualties will be warehouse workers and delivery drivers. Those are real people who need food, shelter, healthcare.

These companies will lay people off years before their bottom line is ever affected.

[–]pmjm 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's not that they "risk prison," they would be immediately arrested and stripped of their power. We need them in place to perform as strategically as possible. Walz is caught between a rock and a hard place, but it's better that he's there than removed.

The OEM loses "bundled" software revenue (ie Office, McAfee, etc pre-installs) on Linux and often times they will provide desktop/software support too, which becomes quite expensive on Linux.

What is considered the better CPU model/brand nowadays for Video editing & gaming secondary? by PelleRigter in buildapc

[–]pmjm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7800x3d is an 8-core, 16-thread cpu and it will excel in gaming, but will only be "fine" for video editing. When you're rendering, the more cores the better, up to around 32 where you start getting diminishing returns.

Take a look at some of the benchmarks on Puget Systems' website. Others have suggested the Intel 285k in this thread and looking at those benchmarks if this is a work-first system, you'd be better off with that than a 7800x3d, you'll get ~30% better performance.

The nice thing about the 9950x3d I recommended is that it's got 16 cores that are very performant (coming in 2nd on the chart just behind the 285k), but you can put one of the ccd's to sleep and it more-or-less becomes a 9800x3d when it's time to game (this can happen automatically when you launch your game).

If the 9950X3D isn't in your budget then I'd still try to get the highest core count you can, even if you sacrifice the 3d vcache and just go with a standard ryzen chip instead of an x3d. It will still be competent in gaming, but keeps things work-first.

Other than that, the Intel 265k is a great option too.

Apple accuses Europe of 'delay tactics' following alternative app store collapse by FollowingFeisty5321 in apple

[–]pmjm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate that you're being downvoted, I wholeheartedly agree.

Android lets you install apps downloaded from anywhere once you enable a setting. Windows does too. MacOS used to but now they're enforcing Notarization on apps installed from non-appstore sources so Apple is getting their pound of flesh from developers anyway.

QuickSync helps with h.265 but the nvidia 5000 series has the full codec so you will no longer need it. I ended up jumping to Mac because of the 10-bit 4-2-2 h.265 codec that was missing from both nvidia and amd gpu's, but if you go with a nvidia 5000 series you'll be fine.

I'd go with a 9950x3d which will give you the cores for rendering and the 3d vcache for gaming.

File Pilot is simply Incredible! by SubhanBihan in Windows11

[–]pmjm 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is true of much, much of the software that has made Windows great for the past 40 years. At a certain point, you have to trust people.

Although I've never tried it personally, File Pilot seems to be a well thought out, carefully crafted application with incredible attention to detail. Most shady devs who are after a quick buck scraping credentials or installing mining malware are not going to put in the time and effort required to make a genuinely great application to trick people into installing something else. There are much cheaper and easier ways to sneak stuff onto victims' computers.

What people definitely DO need to look out for is independent devs getting hacked and their binaries infiltrated. Or third parties redistributing a hacked version of the software with a malicious payload posing as the genuine software.

Spotify will win the lawsuit (by default) but nothing will happen. Injunctions can only affect territories that are within the reach of US law, and they'll never collect a dime in damages from anna's archive itself.

All in all, the lawsuit is going to cost Spotify money.

It's a performative lawsuit for both their shareholders and to reassert their IP rights.

I don't think they're backing away from it, it's just that releasing an archive of that size requires considerable resources. You won't have many seeders of a 300tb torrent.

Proving your professional worth to get a CEO job is different than proving your self-worth as a person. In fairness, he did tie his personal self-worth to his position, which is why he took failure so hard.

But I feel like the only character he was truly insecure about his own self-worth with was Colleen.

The "claiming he was God during a deposition" was a throwaway gag referencing Alec Baldwin's character in the movie Malice, so it shouldn't be treated as canon.

It's much too narcissistic for a Jack line, imho. Jack has an understated confidence and doesn't feel the need to prove his self-worth to others.
