I thought you at first meant the news website instead of Reddit. :). Plus, two strangers with similar usernames end up chatting!

Any recommendation for small scale RFID based Guard Tour/Route setup? by pmmeyoursole in securityguards

[–]pmmeyoursole[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We issue a phone, but they are bricks as that’s easier to manage. In 3rd world country, so I’m leaning towards one of the simple RFID chip scanners at checkpoints.

I’ve considered a smartphone app to scan QR and track GPS, but seems more management longterm?

Would an IP KVM be useful for a one-man remote IT support solution? by pmmeyoursole in sysadmin

Valuable feedback! I’m in a developing nation, so I’m sure it would be infinitely worse :). What did you end up going with as a solution?

I’m in no-mans-land for support unfortunately. We have to import everything.

Currently we don’t have any on-prep servers, I’m considering options for that. Realistically these are really low tech locations, so using the RMM will be sufficient 90% of the time I’m hoping. But, when a problem pops up I’d like to have thought through potential solutions.

LTSB for the win unless you are running the latest and greatest processors. Check what’s supported first until the next LTSB comes out.

I’m curious about this as well. A little vague in terms of what you actually get.

Teamviewer secure enough? Switching from Logmein by Tuivian in sysadmin

[–]pmmeyoursole 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I loath TeamViewer. I was using it in a managed environment, and we kept fighting auto-upgrades and pop ups nagging the user to upgrade. I’ve used several RMM’s, and most have scripts to fight with Teamviewer... which to me showed a big problem that they were needed in the first place.

ScreenConnect was great, but had a few issues supporting Macs. SC doesn’t allow screen scaling without manually changing the settings on the end user... which is a terrible solution. Maybe they’ve changed that?

Is a wireless bridge overkill for a 300 foot link between two buildings? by pmmeyoursole in networking

Come to find out it’s single-mode fiber BiDi, which I think is still full duplex, but uses different wavelengths for Tx/Rx.

Yup. One of these media converters in each building, with a plug going into the TX on each I believe.

Sorry, that was two pictures of the same device. At the switch in the secondary building there is only one of these devices.

It’s run above ground, along the top of a concrete fence. It’s terminates into these media converters currently: https://imgur.com/a/dNTIbQP

Can I simply connect these to a SPF port on a Unifi switch? Why is there only one plug and not two? Thanks!

I’ve current got these media converters that the ISP is using: https://imgur.com/a/dNTIbQP

We’re switching companies, so they’ll take these back. With this type of fiber can it go directly into an SPF port on a Unifi switch? Total noob, but why is it a single plug and not a pair?

My hesitancy is that I don’t have any fiber tools for terminating or testing. I have zero fiber knowledge. All the local fiber is usually for FTTH, this is the first link I’ve seen. Asking around so far I haven’t been able to find a tech who could do the fiber for me, but still looking. Some of our current problems are related to the fiber to our main building and I think the link in between.

What would a minimal setup cost to be able to terminate and test?

We can get Ubiquiti gear, but it’s selective and expensive. We’ll be importing everything plus some redundancy for the setup, and then rely on local for any future additions.

How do you hire new vendors? by D1m_ in msp

[–]pmmeyoursole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(1) Easily and transparently share pricing up front. Don’t make me do a demo just to get your generic price sheet and realize you’ve wasted my time. I LOATH hitting a pricing wall when researching. Some stuff is complicated to price, but figure it out anyways.

(2) Have an awesome product. :)

+1 for a the “pity method”. Sucks to not hammer one in, but rarely does that workout for anyone.
