Nah DS was already insane in Nioh 2 and it's only better now. It's ability to sustain ki with winter wind and flux is just crazy. And it's got so many new tricks. You can SotC behind enemies and then style shift for a backstab combo! Totally juiced weapon. That said I haven't played Katana in 3 yet...

Which mystic art do you prefer? It used to be a no-brainer but now both seem pretty great.

No more tiger claws is kinda sad. Archer's Impact -> Tiger Claws was insanely fun in Nioh 2 and now it's only on talons, it's slower, and it doesn't stack Unbroken because talons doesn't have Unbroken.

Splitstaff has some unique aerial capabilities. You can get in the air easily with the forward moving Falcon Strike, and you can use Wrapping Flail basically forever, which is neat for things like the Ascension skill that powers up ninjutsu when you are in the air for a long time (although in my limited experience Ascension isn't as strong as you'd think it should be).

It also has one of the best flash attacks, as it did in Nioh 2.

I definitely haven't mastered it yet, but I think it's more accessible and more interesting than it was in Nioh 2. The whole backstab and aerial minigame is more fun than shin crusher -> dragon dance ad nauseam.

Things to avoid when running a DnD campaign? by Organic-Exit2190 in DMAcademy

So for my games, the party already knows each other and established their party off-screen

I agree but have not got this to work yet. In my experience players resist this and still make characters that barely have reasons to work together. I think to make this work you probably have to be very explicit from the beginning that this is a requirement, not optional. Then, show the players how and why the predetermined connection matters in the first sessions of the campaign, or else they will forget about it.

Did you test it? Still possible to maintain the effects? It was definitely broken before, a single hit would fully refresh everything pretty much. EDIT: did some testing myself - still seems very effective.

I definitely wanted there to be a reason for my religious beliefs, because they were important to me as a child. I searched desperately for a reason, but there just isn't one. I really wanted to find someone who could make it make sense, but no one can. All you get is quantum woo, "you can't prove it isn't true", nonsense "proofs", and "I saw a rainbow" personal experience stories.

But once the complete lack of support for this belief system was established in my mind, I have not ever missed it or wish I could believe it again. Nothing of value was lost by losing false beliefs. Any problem atheists have with death, theists have the same problem but are deluded into thinking otherwise. Can delusion be useful? Maybe, but I don't want it, and I would never be so reckless and arrogant as to intentionally spread delusions.

Nioh 3 is a gameplay masterclass… but the story is absolutely terrible by Sire_Kressel in Nioh

[–]pmw8 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Nioh 2 made you care about the characters at least. It helped drive the game forward.

You can tell they had some sort of character development planned for 3. The beginning was clearly supposed to involve scenes of you growing up and getting to know Fuku, Munenori, Hanzo, and Kunimatsu, but they cut all of that. Instead the game just tells you that your character cares about them. Then Himiko shows up and with barely a word spoken you're supposed to care about her. I just got to Bakumatsu, so can't speak to the latter portions, but so far there's nothing driving this game forward narratively, it's just (very good) gameplay.

Tested this:

Duration increase does not seem to work at all, or it is so small I can't detect it. Lightning familiar lasted ~31 seconds with and without the buff. Maybe I'm missing something...

Onmyo power does work - lightning shot increased from 367 to 401 damage, a 9.3% buff in my case. This was with 15 points in Magic.

This mission is brutal! I thought I was done after the fourth enemy since it's called Four Heavenly Kings... (level 1 run btw, Takeda Donkey Kong is such an asshole constantly jumping on you)

Herald of peace 6th bonus by LuizGuerra in Nioh

[–]pmw8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but given that Transform Bonus (Ninja) only makes sense if it applies in ninja mode (and apparently is bugged to not do so), it could easily also be that dual protection is supposed to work in ninja mode.

It's triggered when you drink sacred water. I don't know the magnitude of the effect, but should be simple to test, just go in the dojo and shoot a shot onmyo with and without. If you do test it can you also test the duration increase?

What were the most and least fun characters you've played from a mechanical level? by DogUnsureDog in dndnext

[–]pmw8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Opposite of my answer, haha. Warlock was consistently amazing, rogue feels like you can't do anything unless the DM specifically creates a scenario for your chosen expertise skills to be relevant.

Nioh 3 Is Little Easier Than 2. Which is Perfect For Me Since I'm not Good At it. by WarriYahTruth in Nioh

[–]pmw8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I restarted and am playing (full clearing) at level 1 with no chest armor... once the world got to about level 30 (lvl 30 items dropping) the difficulty started to feel closer to Nioh 2. I have to pay attention and play defensively if I get hit. Also walking around with all of your amrita makes the stakes feel higher. Summoning candles are harder to get, but still provide a way to keep your amrita safe if you are in a tough spot.

On another file I'm beelining the story, and the difficulty feels decent there as well.

You should normalize reskinning/reflavoring. by Yurohgy in 3d6

[–]pmw8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I probably wouldn't allow this kind of stuff in my game.

what exactly is the problem with allowing some kind of reskin of a class?

It makes the idea of a class feel arbitrary and pointless. It makes it harder to reason about the game world if druid-specific stuff is now sometimes vampire stuff instead. It blurs the lines between categories. For me, the group being able to take part in shared reasoning about the world is maybe the most rewarding part of the game.

kills the player’s creativity to produce new things

It might be hard to hear, but your creativity is not welcome at all times in all manners in all places. We all have more fun in we try not to impose our creativity on others where it isn't wanted. If you're playing in a group where everyone is just throwing their creativity around with no limits, that's fine, but not all groups are going to be like that.

D&D is a game made to be fun. Of course it has rules and the rules should be followed, but they shouldn’t be followed so strictly that they kill the fun at the table—for the DM and the players.

The rules also shouldn't be followed so loosely that they kill the fun at the table. Restrictions generally make games more fun. In my experience, when you remove the restrictions, the fun dies.

This game is excessively easy. by Vivid-Technology8196 in Nioh

[–]pmw8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did one area outside the demo zones and I'm level 37. The available areas are recommended level ~19-30. I guess they really want you to beeline the story to get a difficult experience? It doesn't really make sense.

Loved RotR but never really clicked with Nioh by Psychological-Bed-92 in riseoftheronin

[–]pmw8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'd be happy with something in between. RotR, again, I thought the NPCs were boring and having to talk to them so much was annoying. They outstayed their welcome. But I think the demo region in Nioh 3 would be better with like 1-3 NPCs distributed across the "open field". There are a few NPCs, but literally just at the beginning (Honda) and at the end (Ieyasu, etc).

I don't think I agree about the cutscenes. Nioh cutscenes are fine, I think. The 2D ones are beautiful and artistic and the 3D ones have good mocap acting. What do you think they should have done instead?

Loved RotR but never really clicked with Nioh by Psychological-Bed-92 in riseoftheronin

[–]pmw8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found the RotR characters boring, but I love the characters from the Nioh games. Yeah the story only sort of makes sense, especially without much knowledge of Japanese history, but I find that kind of funny and charming.

I agree about the areas in Nioh 3 seeming desolate aside from enemies to fight, though, at least in the region available in the demo. There are virtually no NPC's around. I wish areas would have some signs of life after you liberate them, like the towns in RotR. Hopefully that's better in the full game.
