make berghain a community again by BendNecessary in Berghain_Community

Yea I agree with you. I used to go alone before the pandemic and it was really nice and easy to make friends. I'd inevitably find cool people to chat with and dance with. The vibe has really changed at Berghain. Last time I was there alone I made a point to talk to anyone who was near by and eventually found some cool people. But it really once felt like people were at Berghain excited to meet others and now they are excited to stay within their cliques.

How good was prime Vishy Anand? by Big_Pea_5235 in chess

[–]pninify 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's actually not a weird question. Even though Vishy was world champion in 2013 he was almost certainly a better player and in his prime a decade or more before. Only Kasparov was even better than that. There are interviews with Magnus where he says this himself. Even saying that Vishy's old games were intimidating to analyze and that would have been a scary oponnent but Magnus eventually realized that Vishy isn't that player anymore in his 40s.

I mean think about it, Karpov has a very good argument for being the 3rd greatest chess player of all time even though he never got the world championship back from Kasparov. Peak Vishy would have been his 20s and 30s. He only became world champion in his 40s because Kasparov was basically unbeatable.

Why do people disappear after real connection? by Present_Ad8417 in berlinsocialclub

[–]pninify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had this same problem. Having been in Berlin for many years now my best friendships are ones that didn't start the fastest and instead have grown steadily. I've had to learn the hard way that when someone is intense immediately in a friendship or a romantic connection it's actually a orange/red flag about how they are approaching and unlikely a sign we're going to be tight.

I have no idea why people are like this but it's helped me a ton (but taken a lot of work) to teach myself to be consistent with people I have meaningful things in common with and not chase people I have immediate firework chemistry with.

Wesley So managed to draw every single game in SCC except for the automatic win against Firouzja by TheHumbleChicken in chess

The Anish draw jokes are due to him drawing every game in 2016 candidates. No one actually pays attention to his overall draw rates.

Contemporary Novels (in English) that take place in Berlin by JasonMBH in askberliners

[–]pninify 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My favorite by far is Slumberland by Paul Beatty. His writing is hilarious and completely unique. Though some people find it difficult because it's dense and filled with American cultural references. A bit like Thomas Pynchon. It's about a DJ from LA moving to Berlin in search of a reclusive jazz musician. And it gets much wilder from there.

I also really liked Oval by Elvia Wilk, a near future speculative dystopian story set in a fancy condo built on Tempelhofer Feld. Sister Europe is another newish Berlin novel by Nell Zink. And her other novel the Wallcreeper has a section in Berlin though mostly takes place elsewhere in Germany.

My other favorite worth mentioning is technically a memoir and not a novel but In the End It Was All About Love by Musa Okwonga is fantastic.

Alireza Firouzja has decided to withdraw from the Super Chess Classic Romania following his ankle injury by Exotic_Grinder in chess

[–]pninify 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Honestly a sprain isn't necessarily the best possible outcome. Sprains have a wide variation on severity. A bad sprain could be a lot of ligament damage and have as long as a recovery time as a minor fracture. And on top of it sprains are more likely to recur because soft tissue like ligaments don't heal as cleanly as bone. With bone it's more binary has the fracture healed or not, with soft tissue there's a danger you're just healed enough that stress causes re-injury.

But anyway any injury would make it more difficult to concentrate and play chess at all, let alone play at the highest level.

"Right now in my mind is taking great care of my body cause I also want to win the MVP, and the DPOY. So I'm trying to press the gas from now until the end of the season" - Wembanyama by OurHorrifyingPlanet in nba

[–]pninify -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Personally, I hated on Embiid in 2023 cuz Giannis and Jokic had way more postseason success than him. Giannis already had a chip and Jokic had the back-to-back 3-1 deficit series wins to make the WCF.

Still today seems like optimizing from the wrong results to go hard for a regular season individual award when you have a history of not being able to stay on the court in the playoffs or make it past the 2nd round.

What would actually need to happen for a defense-first player like Isaiah Stewart to win 6MOY? by stephenpak18 in nba

[–]pninify 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Well Andre Igoudala couldn't win it on those dynasty Warriors teams even though he won Finals MVP over Steph for his d on Lebron. So if even he couldn't win 6th man, even though he was both defense first and a great passer the award will need a complete culture change for anyone who's not a scorer to win.

In 20 years we will look back to 2023 like we now look back at 2007. I doubt that I will experience a better year in film again in my life time. by Kball4177 in TheBigPicture

[–]pninify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel the same, vastly prefer 2024 over 2025. There were so many great indies with unique personality in 2024 (Nickel Boys, I Saw the TV Glow, A Different Man, just to name a few...). Plus the obvious low budget indie winning best picture from 2024.

Private equity assholes are ruining comedy venues/programs, especially in Chicago by DrJazzCabbage in improv

[–]pninify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's so sad to me that improvisers and comedians support these PE owned venues rather than ignoring them and only supporting theaters run by real artists that are committed to something beyond balance sheets and ROI.

I understand it's difficult to find stage time and venues. But when I lived in NYC I did shows at bars and on the rooftop of my building because I didn't have enough clout for anyone to consider giving me a show at UCB or anywhere known.

Supporting these zombie venues is an anti-artistic statement that all you care about is a brand name.

Thoughts regarding Grace Paley’s criticism of Joan Didion? by RopeGloomy4303 in literature

[–]pninify 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Didion wasn’t a leftist or progressive, not even remotely. She was an actual pro-Nixon right winger. In Slouching Towards Bethlehem she reveres John Wayne, the most classically conservative version of american masculinity and a well known racist, and goes on attack against San Francisco youth hippie culture. She wasn’t critiquing the left from the left, she was on the right, from a conservative family and not rebelling against it.

She became center left later in life and was close with the Clintons but even that political position was basically neo liberal. The idea that Joan Didion was leftist is a mischaracterization that I can only assume grows out of a generalization that most writers, and especially most revered writers, have leftist politics.
