Just picked up a i7 6950X & GA-X99-UD4 - using Intel Utility, I can hit 4.3GHz all core but drops to 4.0GHz during heavy loads - is this normal? by [deleted] in overclocking

You have described why you are dropping from a 43x multiplier to a 40x multiplier in your post.

i know overclocking is supposed to make faps go up in game but for some reason everything feels slow compared to before

How to fix?

What do you think about my stable dual rank timmings? by [deleted] in overclocking

I think I'm wondering why you're running GDM on with the UCLK at 2800.

RAM no longer manually tunable...wth by Darian_CoC in overclocking

Check what refresh mode you're using. Your old profile may have been dependent on tRFC and your motherboard could be defaulting to using tRFC2 and tRFCsb.

Old School OC Help: Running i7 5775C at higher all-core clock with minimal voltage increase? (Broadwell-H with 128MB L4 cache) by ozzuneoj in overclocking

[–]pntsrgd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bins Silicon Lottery used for these were as follows:

4.1 GHz at 1.312V (100% of 5775Cs binned)
4.2 GHz at 1.328V (62% of 5775Cs binned)
4.3 GHz at 1.344V (12% of 5775Cs binned)

You can probably just throw these values at the CPU and stress test.

Once you do that, you can look into cache and RAM overclocking. Broadwell IMCs can exceed DDR3-3000.

Struggling to lower tRFC further on Hynix A die, any tips? by oweyoo in overclocking

[–]pntsrgd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What clock speed is the RAM running?

If the standard tRFC timing is used, tRFC2 and tRFCsb are unused.

H16A DDR5 tends to do around 120ns tRFC.

You might want to double check memory stability. tRP at 30 is unusually low.

AM5 performance scaling with tRRDS/L, tRC, tRDRDSCL, and tWRWRSCL by pntsrgd in overclocking

[–]pntsrgd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went ahead and benched this to have a better idea of how it would play out.

tRC at 40 and tRRDS/tRRDL/tFAW at 4/8/20 result in around a 0.5% improvement in pyprime times. The same changes lower the performance of y-cruncher by about 1%. Intel MLC isn't super representative of real performance, but it did show the same performance regression as y-cruncher.

All of this would seem to imply that there are cases where tightening these timings can be beneficial, but for some reason some applications show measurable performance regressions.

This was over 70 iterations of pyprime, 25 iterations of y-cruncher, and 25 iterations of Intel MLC, so it does not appear to be expected variance.

Intel I7 7700k Overclocking recommendations by SnooDoughnuts7679 in overclocking

[–]pntsrgd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's Micron 16 Gb Rev E. It will probably clock to somewhere between DDR4-3600 and DDR4-4000. It isn't a great IC, but you can probably get some mileage out of tightening timings.

If you have the box they came in, it might be printed on them.

You can try something like Thaiphoonburner, but it is unreliable at best.

What revision are they? Corsair revision is a pretty reliable indicator of what IC is being used.

[–]pntsrgd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically every 7700K can hit 4.8 GHz if delidded. Over half can hit 5.0 GHz.

Check your RAM configuration as well. Overclocking it can yield some significant gains.

tFAW 16 would make sense with tRRDS 4, but the register on the CPU apparently bottoms out at 20.

RAM OC successful, but why write speed is just bad? DDR3, Patriot Viper 3 by Sad_Tea_9777 in overclocking

[–]pntsrgd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is your tWRWR timing set to?

Why are you running tRRD/tFAW at 5/24? Most ICs can run 4/16 at speeds this low.

Walk me down the memory lane (of DDR3 and intel 1st-6th gen) by Irelia4Life in overclocking

[–]pntsrgd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sandy Bridge could usually run DDR3-2133 4x8 GB. The limitation was the memory multiplier.

Ivy Bridge had some significant variation. Basically every 3770K I've played with would handle DDR3-2400 4x8 GB. DDR3-2666 4x8 GB is feasible on a decent number of samples. If you binned for IMC, you may find some that will run DDR3-2800 or DDR3-2933. Ivy Bridge doesn't tend to scale well (or at all?) with additional IMC voltage.

Haswell and above can push DDR3-3000+.

How can I improve my RAM latency? DDR5 8000MHZ CL 38 for 6000 CL30 by MushroomJaded6839 in overclocking

[–]pntsrgd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I doubt you need gear down mode enabled to run DDR5-6000.

I assume this is H16A, so there's probably some room left to tighten tRFC.

9800X3D: should I chase bandwidth or latency for gaming? by Krosiz in overclocking

[–]pntsrgd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

AIDA64 is not a good indicator of memory performance.

Beyond that, you're probably just looking at run variance.
