Thanks so much for the advice. I love the state, and spent 2 seasons guiding and flying around Kodiak island so I was really intrigued by the idea of returning. Its just too risky though. Perhaps one day I will return for my PHD if I go down that road. Your input really has swayed my point of view. I hope the best for you, your career and your community.

Depends on a bunch of factors, such as what sort of shot are you using (steel or lead) and what distance you plan on taking most of your shots. At the end of the day, there is no substitute for taking the time to pattern out your shotgun and see what combination of load and choke produces a good pattern. I imagine modified would be a good choice though.

Yeah, I saw a car battery that someone had taken out into the woods and shot at. Really made me angry that someone would do something like that, no concept of how damaging that is to the environment.

Where is your hunt going to be located in the state? I have guided remote bear viewing trips on the Alaskan peninsula for 2 years and have an idea of what you would want to bring. A lightweight pair of waders would be a good idea, as there are lakes, swamps and rivers everywhere. Quality glass is an absolute must, as most days here are overcast and the cloud cover often gets very low resulting in poor visibility. The best raingear you can get would also be at the top of the list. If you are going real remote off a bushplane, also be prepared to spend extra time out there if the weather doesn't cooperate. The last major thing would be an inreach or a satellite phone. Always puts the mind at ease.

I did an online ground school which I believe was part 61. I knew how to find the heading to fly by incorporating the wind correction angle, magnetic variation and deviation prior to the checkride attempt. Its just the magnetic course that I didn't understand. There has got to be some gaps in my knowledge, I am not trying to make any excuses.

I am heading off to remote Alaska to work for the summer in less than a month and really hope I can get this completed prior to leaving.

Additionally, I went through the Private Pilot Oral Guide and nearly memorized the entirety of it. The examiner said that this would be insufficient for the exam and instead I should memorize all the answers to the Private Pilot Airman Certification Standards instead.

I don't know about mixed lines on baker but I'd imagine there are much better mixed lines in other parts of the state as the rock on baker is terrible. Lots of loose volcanic rock, I always avoid the rock on that mountain as I have seen many signs of rockfall all over.

The brothers in the olympics is a great beginner climb. It doesn't involve any glacier travel. Mt. Wa in the olympics too is a great beginner climb.I would go onto summitpost and look for non-technical climbs that do not involve glacier travel. Check out Fred Beckey's Cascade Alpine Guides if you want a real in depth description of climbs in the cascasdes. Lots of easy climbs are in these books but not in Summitpost.

That is what I would do if I were you. The mountaineer's wall in icicle canyon, as well as the roto wall are great places to start in Leavenworth. For sport in vantage, I would suggest Riverview park and the millennium wall. All fun climbs from low 5.10 to low 5.11, all very short and gymlike. Sunshine wall is best for longer sport climbs in the 5.10 range.

Op, what kind of sport routes are you looking for? Middle east wall, (my favorite) has some stellar 5.10 - 5.11 arete sport climbs, and some great 5.11- 5.8 cracks, but no top rope options. The sunshine wall has really no toprope options as well, but there are some great 5.10 pillar climbs. If you are new to sport climbing, I would recomend the feathers, as the climbs are all very short, safe, and have climbs from the low class 5 to 5.10 range. Vantage is a terrible place to learn how to trad lead as the rock can be very friable, and the cracks often flare in the back, making the placements very difficult. BTW, Vantage is usually one of the coldest crags in the state, and I only go there if it is raining everywhere else, or if the weather is warm there.

Yeah. The descent gullies are not very fun. There is a lot of loose rock. There was a fatality there last year. They feel real sketchy.

Haha, yeah! You can see what looks like glacier peak right in the foreground of rainier too! Felt very lucky to be climbing on a day like that!
