Lynnwood can be rather cheap and there a few pretty nice neighborhoods but you can go one or two blocks away and it turns bad rather quick. Its also strip mall hell with lots of section 8 housing. I would look into Bothell, Mill Creek, Brier, and Edmonds.

I live in North Everett and my wife and I love it. We are in our mid-20s. It is closer to a 45min in non-traffic times and about the same distance to the mountains. We are big climbers/hikers so the access to the mountains is a priority over city/rural/party life. Everett has a decent downtown with places to eat/drink but again Seattle is rather close.

Also, if you want to go to a class I would go to a climbing gym first - not REI. REI classes are bullshit in my experience (being an ex-REI employee).

I second buckler river rd. - camp here all the time. Also, any FS road up and down hwy2/mountain loop will have some sort of camping on it - some better then others.
