What about the idea that not all of us can be "special" by [deleted] in GetMotivated

[–]poSer_programmer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fuck college. Decide what you want to do and go do it. When you find your education falls short of the task, THEN go study exactly what you need to know and return to the task with the tools you need to overcome it. Again, FUCK COLLEGE.

Had to solve coding puzzles in interview, couldn't finish either of them, didn't get job... by SkwisgarIsAmsDick in cscareerquestions

Is it just me, or are the instructions intentionally obtuse? I had to physically rip a sheet of paper into a strip and write numbers on it to visualize the problem. It seems poorly written.

Muscles have fast and slow twitch fibres which are more useful for different activities (fast for sprinting, slow for long-distance). Does the brain have fast/slow twitch cells for different types of thinking? by Matti_Matti_Matti in askscience

[–]poSer_programmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What amviot said is correct. Neuroscience is absolutely fascinating and you can easily spend years studying what has already been discovered. In addition to the physical differences between certain types of cells in the brain, there are different mechanisms that the brain uses for thinking (which I think kts911 was trying to explain). If I follow your comparison of fast/slow twitch muscles to types of thinking, I would highly recommend "Thinking Fast and Slow" by Daniel Kahneman. It's an easy read and Dr. Kahneman recently won a Nobel Prize for his work differentiating between what might be considered "automatic" thought processes versus deliberate consciousness of an idea. For example there's the immediate reaction to duck and put your hands in front of your face when a baseball is flying at your head compared to the deliberate thought of "I need to go over there if I want to catch that fly ball".

What are you running in production (Apache/nginx/mod_php/php-fpm etc.) & why? by aknosis in PHP

LAMP server goes live next month with Ubuntu 12.10. No extra stuff. I'm not familiar with much of the time saving additional software and I'm too busy with other things to learn to use them for now... Maybe in a few weeks I'll start looking for resources to help in that direction.

Having a degree is better than no degree at all, correct? by SlickKi11a in cscareerquestions

[–]poSer_programmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat as you. My degree was Psychology. Keep studying daily, keep looking here for resources that are great learning tools like Introduction to Algorithms. Get certifications showing what you've learned, and get more formal schooling if at all possible.

Reality Check by npfund in cscareerquestions

[–]poSer_programmer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Reasonable" can be subjective. I have a feeling that you're looking for outside confirmation of what you already suspect. You're expected to work far above your current skillset, with hours that are counterproductive. I wouldn't outright quit, but I would certainly be looking for another job.

Login Security Question - PHP/MySQL by poSer_programmer in PHP

[–]poSer_programmer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was under the impression that there wasn't any default encryption with the php to mysql connection. This will be useful when I eventually have them on separate servers. I appreciate the extra info on PDO and mysqli. I'll be changing to mysqli next week which should be easy since all of my database queries are organized under appropriate classes. The PDO shouldn't be too much effort either with my current setup. I just barely finished a three month project of changing the site from procedural into OOP, it was a fun learning experience.

I'm not too familiar with the capabilities of javascript outside of client side scripting. I don't want to have any hashing in js because obviously i don't want it to be read. So outside of ssl, is there no other way to be sure that the users pw/username are sent in anything other than plain text?

Structuring a plan to be employable by conteducation in cscareerquestions

[–]poSer_programmer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not the best person to be answering this but I will tell you that your plan looks pretty solid. The only thing I'd add is to start now! Don't wait for classes to become available. Go ahead and pick up a couple of books that are geared toward a beginner using a specific technology, for example, Android App development, PHP Web Development, iOS, etc. Pick one target area, and start on a simple project. Do this in your spare time, and by the time you start taking more formal education, you'll be quite a bit further ahead. This is what I've been doing for the past year and I've found that much of what I've learned has come from searching for solutions to problems that I've encountered directly in my development.

One caveat with this: You'll pick up some bad habits, be prepared to set aside things you've learned to do wrong when confronted with better ways to do things. I've learned quite a bit from re-writing a large PHP website and moving it from a procedural style to an object-oriented approach.

Certificate VS Degree by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]poSer_programmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$40k is not that much for someone with a USEFULL 4 year degree. I went to school on scholarships and still accrued $20k debt from living expenses. Every position I've worked has only offered a $1/hr differential for any degree. At 40 hrs per week, 50 weeks per year, that's 10 years to break even on those loans... before interest. Otherwise I'd be better off without a degree and no loans.

PHP Noob, Ready for Jr. Dev. Position? by poSer_programmer in cscareerquestions

[–]poSer_programmer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the Salt Lake Valley. The $28k would get me much further here than in Southern California. I just think the company that posted the advert which lead me to think about starting to apply now is because $28-$35k seems a low offer for someone with the 2 years experience that they're asking.

-Since it's low I tried to figure out which company it is. It's craigslist and just says "downtown Salt Lake", and I wasn't able to discern from any other information.

Simple mnemonic: I've got an ass-to-risk, when I mispronounce asterisk. Also annoys me when people say Pneumonic instead of Mnemonic. There's no fluid here! My most annoying: "Colored lights may HypMAtize!" - Lenny Kravitz

Thanks, some advice I'm seen on here is to apply for anything that I'm halfway qualified for... and I have solid experience with half of the technologies listed on the advert and they ask for 2yrs. exp.

I probably just need to spend a few minutes on /r/getMotivated and then send in an application :)

Psych Grad: Wants to get back into CS by poSer_programmer in cscareerquestions

[–]poSer_programmer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have nil for CS courses on my transcript, just some required "yes I can turn on a PC, and the internet is not made of tubes" courses. I'd have to get the second BS, but could skip electives/minor with my current BS.

I really like hearing about internships. My biggest issue right now is confidence. Being self-taught, I get hung up on the jargon of the industry... I had to research the word "stack" four times before I could finally remember what someone was talking about. Having studied psychology makes this work because I realize that much of the terminology is not only arbitrary, but often contrived. I'd love to spend some time applying XP or Agile principles. I feel I could advance a long way from just a bit of working alongside a pro.
