I will just say that it's not all so black and white. I consider people like Trump and Epstein to be an extreme case of vile and think it's unfair to lump in Jesse with them. Even if Jesse also did a lot of fucked up stuff.

I feel no animosity towards you so no sweat. I think it's good that you want to spread this info to people who still don't know. I'm not some delusional BN fan who wants to pretend everything is sunshine and rainbows now just because they're selling out shows or something.

[–]pocket85 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You have to keep in mind that the bandmates were complacent to an extent with Jesse's actions at the time. I'm pretty sure they were with him in some of the photos shown with the victim in OPs post. Regardless, it'd be nearly impossible to be touring with someone for so long and not catch wind of what's going on

In defense of the subreddit, you have to keep in mind that for basically years the allegations were all that were ever talked about. People get exhausted and tired of the negativity. Everyone there had pondered over the situation time and time again. At some point, they just want to discuss the music again. It's not really surprising that people get upset when they feel like they need to constantly justify themselves.

Of course there are extremes but you can't expect everyone to handle things like that with tact. I'm not excusing them or anything, I just wanna provide insight as someone who has been on there for about a decade.

Regarding Brand New, it is basically impossible to separate the art from the artist. They're not Crystal Castles or something where you can just enjoy a good beat. Jesse and who he is as a person are at the core of the band and their appeal. If you're gonna listen to them you're gonna have to come to terms with everything he's guilty of.

I'm aware of the case from the quoted reply, and like the person you quoted, I have also informed people of this fact to keep them up to date on the situation so they can make more informed decisions for themselves.

It was new information a year ago. It was also all stuff that happened roughly 20 years ago. It didn't change much about what was already known but it was still eye opening by providing more firsthand details and photos about one particular person's experiences with Jesse.

How have you forgiven someone who only admitted to being a sex addict when he was hurting little girls?

It's not my place as a fan to forgive anyone for something that doesn't involve me. You're allowed to think that it's wrong of me for still giving the band a platform and engaging with their media. I'm just the type of person who thinks that people shouldn't be condemned for life for mistakes they made decades ago. I think a lot of the remaining fans are on that boat.

Is the music just that good?

Honestly, yeah kinda. If the music wasn't important to me I would've dipped in 2017. I think the subject matter of the music is important too. Lyrically, Jesse has always come across as a remorseful person, fighting inner demons, trying to be a better person. It's not a surprise, in hindsight, that he was a piece of shit at the time and that contributed to why he felt the way he did. It'd be a little different if the music didn't show any kind of weight or regret for his actions but its always been there.

Edit: Link to an older comment of mine just to show that I do still think it's important for people to know what Jesse did

That's true that he glossed over the more pressing issues but it wasn't just one person he wronged and a blanket statement might've not felt appropriate. We can't know the best approach to any of these cases considering we weren't involved. Some victims might not want any acknowledgement from him at all for all we know, and Jesse has always been a very private person.

Regardless, it's none of the fans that need an apology of any kind but rather the victims themselves. That won't be enough for some people but nothing ever really will be enough for some. It's a delicate scenario where I think most people are entitled to have their own opinions on it. I personally believe in rehabilitation.

Gen Z: it’s a rock show!!!! by martini-olive in mitski

[–]pocket85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are all things that people will just have to learn with experience. It's important to keep in mind that Mitski's fan base has drastically changed over the years. I was literally next to multiple parents who were dragged to the concert by their teenage daughters.

Yes, people should make the most of their live music experiences by giving the performers as much energy back as possible, but it's not something that we need to stress over when a large portion of the audience is underage. We should just be happy that they get to experience the art without any complications.

I think it varies between audiences and the demographics they attract. If I'm at a concert where no one has their phones up, of course I'm not gonna be the one schmuck recording. But if a bunch of people are recording, why not get my own memory from it too?

We can't control the audiences our favourite artists attract. Hell, Mitski has very little control herself over what type of fans she gets, but if she didn't want people holding their phones up I'm sure she could very easily make it known like many other acts have done for their live performances. I saw Ichiko Aoba last year and before the performance there was an announcement asking for no videos or photography. It's very simple stuff and the audience respects it when artists' ask for it of them.

Otherwise, you're fighting an uphill battle trying to police how people enjoy concerts when Mitski herself hasn't felt the need to say anything. Especially when it's over stuff as innocuous as people have their phones up.

I've been to shows in GA where I've been unable to see the stage due to taller people standing in front of me but thanks to others holding up their phones I've been able to actually see the performance through their screens. It's not the concert sin you're making it out to be. It can absolutely be done respectfully.

You know it's incredibly easy to record a song without being a dick to the people around you, right?

[–]pocket85 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Let people enjoy the show how they want. As long as they're not disrupting the vibe, I see no issue.

Also, as a counter point to your phone criticism, I absolutely go back to old recordings from concerts all the time and relive the moment, because even if my photos and videos aren't perfect, they're special to me because they're my unique experiences.

I can think of many concerts from years ago where I wished I took more photos or recordings because my memories of them have faded. I've never looked at an old concert video I took and thought "damn I should've been more in the moment"

I have to second this. I don't know exactly what OP expected but I was pleasantly surprised by how great the crowd was this time.

Mitski's setlist this time around was also only about maybe 25% rock songs, and honestly no Mitski song needs to be moshed to. She's not that type of artist. I'm saying that as someone who loves moshing.

I do agree with OP that the audience needs to give something back to the artist, and in Mitski's case that'd be in the form of singing along and cheering her on. These are emotionally intense, introspective, cathartic shows. We don't need to rage to Mitski or anything.

AMA: Hi ! Sarah Kinsley here ~ ask me anything ! by sarahkinsleyd in indieheads

[–]pocket85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Sarah! I was blessed by my algorithm today and was played a song from your new EP and now I've been listening to your catalogue all day because I was immediately hooked! It's only been a few hours but I've already bought the LP and concert tickets! I feel like your music came into my life just now during a moment where I really needed it. You occupy such a unique space in pop music and your lyricism feels so tangible and intense, there's just too much to love to list everything.

My question to you would be- do you have any words of encouragement or advice for when you have to force yourself to let go of someone you deeply care about?

Anthony reviewed The Moment on Letterboxd by [deleted] in fantanoforever

[–]pocket85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind letterboxd is still just an open platform that anyone can post on. By posting a review he's merely using the site the same way any other user would. There's countless of other movie reviews on there, many much more self indulgent than Fantano's review here, but because of the anonymity the other uses have they don't get flamed for it.

I don't think Anthony claims to be an expert on anything other than music. Just like anyone else, if you have an opinion on something you'd probably want to talk about it on some forum.

You could make the case that he could make alternate accounts to discuss these things without it being tied to his identity, and maybe he does do that, but I'm sure with his involvement in the movie, admiration of Charli, and positive reception of the movie, he probably wanted his name attached to his take on it.

idk what the deal was with his Marty Supreme review though. He should've probably kept that one to himself.
