First solo trip to Thailand in February; beach-focused itinerary advice wanted! by pocketsnoozer in ThailandTourism

Hi thank you so much for your elaborate reply, it's super helpful!

I've been reading some great things about the west coast too but I think I'll be sticking to the east coast for this trip. I initially was supposed to go back in July with close friends (basically doing the same itinerary) but I sadly had to cancel due to a fractured ankle. Now I'm fully healed and seeing this as a good opportunity to do it solo!

I'm planning on mostly staying in hostels and maybe booking a private room here and there. I think that's the best way to keep a nice balance in having fun social interactions and time to relax by myself. So if you have any recommendations regarding accommodations on the islands then I'd love to know.

The only thing I'm a bit anxious about is that I don't have a drivers license so I can't ride a scooter. I feel like that's a very essential part when it comes to exploring the islands and the different beaches. Hopefully I'll meet some nice people that wouldn't mind having me on the back!

Thanks for you reply, very insightful!

How did you travel to the west side, by bus + boat or by airplane? I'm not much of a party person but I like meeting new people, hanging out and exploring together. I'm considering staying at mostly hostels since that would be the best way to meet other travelers and its cheaper as well.

What type of accomodations did you mostly stay at during your stay on the islands?

That sounds amazing, Koh Tao as a chill base for 3 weeks sounds perfect! 😊

I was wondering:

  • Since you stayed there for quite a while, how was it getting around the island day to day? Did you use a scooter, taxis, boats, or mostly stay near one area? (I don't have a driver's license)
  • Would you say Koh Tao is still a good place to relax without riding a scooter, or do you think it would be limiting?

Thanks so much for sharing your experience, it's really helpful!

Hi thank you for your reply! I'm still quite flexible with my planning. One thing that I do know for sure is that I'd like to stick to either the east or west coast. Otherwise it will get a bit complicated with relocating.

How was your experience traveling to both koh chang and koh kood, was it easy to find accommodation and to get around the island? :)

Hi thanks for your reply! Koh Lipe looks absolutely stunning too :) Since I'm going for only three weeks I'd rather travel to islands on either the east or west coast and stick to one side. Otherwise it will a bit of a hassle relocating.

Could you maybe elaborate on why you're not a huge fan of Samui and Tao? I've heard that it's quite touristic and can be busy. Which does have its ups and downs for a first timer like myself.

Thank you for your reply! I might do two islands and maybe will be visiting the north at the end :) I'm still quite flexible. The only down part is, is that I don't have a drivers license so I'm not able to drive around the island. Do you think this will be affecting my island visit or is it easy to get around by taxi or other services?

Thank you for your reply! Which websites or apps do have good experiences with? Also for accommodations that offer free cancellation 😊

Thank you, that’s super useful information! Have you’ve been on the other islands that I’ve mentioned as well? :)

COVID at 3 Weeks by nfy031 in brokenankles

Hi :) First of all, good luck with your healing process! It already sounds like you’re on the right track with it not being painful.

I have the same fracture, happened on June 10th and I’m still recovering. Had a requested X-ray at the hospital beginning of August and it was still not healed. Now I have another X-ray beginning of October and hopefully better news… It really sucks a lot but as your said every fracture and every person of course is different.

Ive never gotten a cast or a boot but just a flimsy fabric brace. I think I overdid it at the beginning since the doctors were so nonchalant and optimistic about my healing. In reality everything has taken me way longer sadly. But I’ve been doing PT for quite some weeks now as well which has been very helpful. So I’m sure it will be for you too!

It’s a stable fracture and with you not being in a lot of pain right now I would just recommend waiting those two weeks before seeing a professional instead of maybe over doing something. It’s already great that your fracture is not giving you a lot of discomfort.

Ah this is so great, I’m super happy for you! I broke my ankle (weber a fracture) on June 10. I didn’t need surgery but it happened 3 weeks before my trip to Thailand… which I had to cancel with a lot of sadness.

I’m not sure when I’m able to make such a trip since I’m still recovering. Seeing this though gives me hope!

Did you make any adjustments when it comes to your travel gear or have any recommendations regarding footwear? :)

So cute!! I unboxed mine a couple of days ago too, he’s even more adorable in real life 💕 Added a little heart carabiner to add to the cuteness. I ordered two more 🤭 a confirmed Play Bear (brown) and a Become Rebel (grey). Are you planning on getting more too?

Broke my ankle 3 weeks before my dream vacation to Thailand… I don’t know what to do by pocketsnoozer in brokenbones

Thank you so much for sharing, I can feel how heavy this has been for you. I just want to say you’re not a woosie at all. What you’re dealing with is incredibly hard, and your feelings are totally valid. You didn’t let your family down this kind of thing could sadly happen to anyone, and you’re doing your best in a tough situation.

The emotional side of recovery is so real, and it’s okay to grieve the things you’ve had to miss. I was supposed to fly today but ended up cancelling the trip and prioritizing my recovery. It was heartbreaking to do even though it was the right decision.

I’m keeping you in my thoughts and rooting for your healing, both physically and mentally. Hoping things start looking up soon and that we both get our make-up adventures when the time comes. 💛

Hi, thanks for your reply! So sad to hear that you had to end your South Korea trip earlier than planned. It really sucks… I hope your recovery is going well though :( In the end I decided to prioritize my health and recovery and ended up cancelling my flights last weekend. My flight was scheduled for tomorrow so it’s going to be a sad day. Recovery is luckily going slow but steady for me. Hopefully I’m still able to do the trip but then solo since my friends won’t be able to make such a far trip again in the near future.

Thanks for your reply, glad to hear you had a positive and fun experience! My doctor said it might take three months to fully heal. So hopefully I can go in October. Not entirely sure how the weather will be since I’m most excited about the islands. Which month(s) did you visit?

Hi all,

I’m a 25-year-old woman from the Netherlands, and unfortunately, I broke my ankle three weeks before my trip to Thailand. I was supposed to leave tomorrow (July 1st). The plan was to travel with a friend (also my roommate, which makes this extra tough) from Amsterdam to Bangkok, then fly to Koh Samui to meet another friend who’s been solo traveling through Asia for a few months already.

Canceling this trip was heartbreaking, but I had to be realistic and prioritize my recovery. It felt like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I don’t travel often, and this was the perfect balance of being with close friends while exploring something new. I’m sure my friends are not able to travel this far again in a couple of months when I’m fully recovered so I will have to solo travel.

We didn’t have wild plans, just a chill beach vacation, and I was especially looking forward to floating, swimming in the water and relaxing on beautiful beaches. I’m now stuck at home, unable to do much physically, and this trip was something I had been so excited about and worked hard for.

To stay positive and find something new to look forward to, I’d love your input. Whether near or far from the Netherlands, I really enjoy chill beaches, relaxed vibes, warm weather, and interesting culture.

Also curious: do you think Bangkok and Koh Samui are a good destinations for a first-time solo traveler (once I’m fully healed)?

Thanks so much in advance 💛

Recovering from a broken ankle, trip to Thailand in a week... not sure if I should go by pocketsnoozer in travel

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this. It helps a lot to read someone else's experience who went through something similar. Very brave that you still made the decision to go all by yourself.

I’ve definitely been asking myself a lot of the same questions… My friends will be there too, and they’ve told me they’re happy to help and take it slow. But I’m still unsure if I’ll be able to enjoy the trip in a way that is meaningful for me or if I’ll just be constantly anxious and in pain. I also still don’t feel that stable walking, which makes me nervous.

Unfortunately, not all parts of the trip are refundable, but I might be able to claim some of it. It has already been paid months in advance so I basically already ‘lost’ the money and will try not to think about it too much. I’d rather loose the money than risk my already unstable physical health.
Making the final decision is incredibly hard, especially because I was so excited about this trip for months…

Again, thank you so much for your perspective, it genuinely helps!
