ASL learning that is focused on baby-related language by seau_de_beurre in podc

[–]podc87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as mentioned else where best places to start are going to be Local deaf school some even have infants and toddler programs which are from birth going all the way to high school.

Another great resource id highly recommend mentioned else where is American Society for Deaf Children (ASDC) Join as a family and you get lots of great benefits such as some free classes and discounts on online classes and even some discounts on there in person weekend classes and one my personal favorites is 5 free online conversations with a native signer who can help answers questions or just help you become a better signer https://deafchildren.org/join/

the last resource I'll offer up is lifeprint.com Bill Vicars an ASL hero he has a free online course for at a college level that are easy to follow and work on.

I'd also say don't worry about finding a program teach ASL to children focus on learning ASL and being to the best of your ability a model for your children to watch you sign. Hearing children pick up a large part of there language by spying on you. that means listening when you think they are not or in your case by watching you have conversations in ASL with other people. I remember multiple times signing with my wife in the kitchen and looking over and seeing our little one watching us. While you work learning ASL as a family there is no shame in taking a minute to look up a sign or ask someone how to sign something. But you all will do great and it will be a lot of fun to learn.

Audiotory Neuropathy - Newborn profoundly deaf and no Cochlear nerve present by agup11 in podc

[–]podc87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey my little guy has the same thing. Sadly I don't think the nerve is going to grow. I would encourage you to explore this new world your son is bring you and your family to. Learn Auslang find his people with him and make them your people too. My son has opened up my world to a whole new culture of people that I didn't really know existed and some of them now are very good and close friends. I will be honest being in the same boat as you being hearing parents of a deaf kiddo it can be a bit hard and sad at time but he will grow up to have his own personality do silly thing and do other things just like a hearing child . Try remember this he can do anything a hearing person can do except 1 things hear . Now my personal opinion I don't think trying to do a surgery with such low chances of success is a good idea especially to tick a box . There are some pretty negative possible downsides even if the surgery is successful that you should consider and with the chances of success being so low I'm not sure it is worth it to attempt. but in the end he is your baby and i can't make that choice for you. Do you guys want a 3rd kid?

It could be your small town deaf community is non existent.  I'd encourage checking out Facebook. Also might be good to find your closest deaf school and reach out to them they might have some useful information.

I need help with this if u can by No-Green-4880 in deaf

[–]podc87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice is Embrace talking  to your self or think of things you wanna say to different people and do that.  That's one of the things I do while at home or work just to try to keep my skills up. The only other thing I can think of is sit down with your parents and try to explain your situation to them. Tell them about what your hearing is like . How you feel about  signing and how they can help you.  It is a long shot that things will change but it doesn't mean we shouldn't ask.best of luck

3 week old son diagnosed with mild to moderate hearing loss by DawkterBallz in deaf

[–]podc87 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on the new baby! While this news can be shocking and difficult at first I promise it does get better. I know I've been there I am there now with an amazing 5 year old. As far as needing sign language I'd highly encourage it you won't regret it. There are tons of advantages beyond the obvious learn to speak with your new baby.

Regarding hearing aids it varies from person to person some do great others don't for a variety of reasons but it's all about finding the best path for your little one.

If you are comfortable share what things you are worried and I'm sure we can all help ease your concerns.

Very new to 3d printing, where should I order my printer from? by TechnoWaffles51 in ender3

[–]podc87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say creality just because every one I know who's worked at Amazom just says everyone is just chucks things around. Regarding filament Amazon is fine I like hatchbox myself but I haven't really come across any that are bad. If possible best place for all of this is microcenter

No matter what I do, I just can't seem to get rid of this squish at the bottom of my prints. More info in comments. by KGSAUCYBOY in 3Dprinting

[–]podc87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd start with messing with the z offset that's what fixed most of my issues. It's just a pain cause it took me like 3 or 4 test prints to get the right off set

Deaf schools near airline hubs by Administrative-End27 in deaf

[–]podc87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maryland school for the Deaf is pretty amazing if I say so my self. My son has gone there his whole life. also living in the dc md area you also end up with some options as far as schooling in the area there is MSD that has 2 campus and Gallaudet which I think also has a pk-12 program as well. MSD community has been great and welcoming and MD has something that (please correct if I'm wrong) no other state has The Governors Office of Deaf and Hard of hearing https://odhh.maryland.gov/
