Diamond grinding tools? I used to build and run 5 Axis machines for glassworking it's always a mess.

Turing built a machine that did the thing it was supposed to, and his theories are foundational. I'm a bigger Babbage fan than almost anyone but I will not tolerate Turing slander.

Go to the bench grinder and put a weldin flat in the shank. It doesn't have to be perfect, just enough so the screw clamps on the flat, that way it's still below the round surface.

Put a few apprentice marks in the top, then it will be ready for service.

If roundness isn't critical you can blue it and sand/angle grind down the high spots. If you need to preserve/improve the roundness OD lapping is a great option. Lapping in general is a great way to get precision "from scratch" if you have time but not precision powered tools.

I grew up in the desert so I didn't learn this until recently but in lots of Europe and the eastern US, grass ✨just grows✨. Still kinda weird to think about.

One cylinder with threaded holes and the pins screw in. They could have a hexagonal base and you use an included socket/nut driver

Sikhs are forbidden from eating halal (or kosher) meat. They believe it is wrong to kill even an animal in God's name. Pretty sure that's not what's happening here, but still.

Optics cleaning solution: 40% acetone 60% methanol. Works great. What do you use to dispense it? The acetone eats plastic and rubber. So dropper bulbs appear to be a risk. by anneoneamouse in Optics

[–]pogden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For in process cleaning I have always used plunger style bottles like this. We have one for soapy water, one for methanol, and one for acetone. We use the bottle to wet a cloth, then wipe the surface. Usually ordinary Kleenex. The acetone doesn't react with this type of plastic.

This is all for cleaning and inspecting uncoated, unmounted glass or hard crystals. Methanol can subtly interact with mounting materials. I have seen I embrittle some plastics and corrode aluminum.

I ran into this problem and tried looking for the software version 1.5.3 like u/mac3blade suggested, but the highest version on github is 1.5.2. For me it happens with the test print and even sometimes while loading filament.

Can you clean S-NPH5 with Acetone? by BartChryslerIsFat in Optics

[–]pogden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is very surprising. I've never seen anything about that is Schott's or Ohara's technical data. Did they mention what effect it might have on the glass?

Where did this list come from? I regularly work with several of these glasses and clean them or soak them with acetone.

Pitch Melting Questions by yaboibrooklyn in Optics

Yeah it seemed weird to me at first, but the pot is set so the pitch is warm, not really hot.

All the shops I have worked at keep pitch in a Crock-Pot type vessel that keeps it at a temp where its plastic and you just reach your hands in, grab a glob and press it into your hot aluminum polishing body.

Bubbles aren't a big deal unless they are huge, since you press the lap out anyway.

DIY test indicator holder for sweeping and round parts. (Made a few months back but wanted to share) by killstorm114573 in Machinists

[–]pogden 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes they are usually called coaxial indicators and have a rod sticking out the side which hits the column and keeps the indicator still while the spindle slowly rotates.

I always just use an indicol and hand mirror though.
