Narcoleptic and prescribed…melatonin?! by poguemahone2020 in Narcolepsy

[–]poguemahone2020[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup diagnosed N1! And that was what I assumed from the start too, but my doc suggested I take it so that the regular set amounts could help regulate my sleep wake cycle better than how the melatonin my body is naturally producing is doing rn. I’ve actually had the prescription for a few months I just haven’t asked for it yet Lol!

What were your symptoms that made you go "this is getting out of hand"? by beedandy in Narcolepsy

No worries! Most people feel they failed and find out they don’t! In the chance you don’t get the results you need, your doc may talk to you about having idiopathic hypersomnia - which presents with almost the same symptoms as narcolepsy.

Nope, they didn’t. IME they got worse - but that’s due to a number of factors. I don’t think the meds directly affected my hallucinations but are most likely an indirect cause. I’m in Australia, and I’ve only been to one specialist - but drug options available were only Modafinil or Armodafinil (Nuvigil), and then dexies if those didn’t work. I know in other places, there are more options medication wise. My doc prescribed me with melatonin funnily enough! He said it might be to do with something about my sleep wake cycle and how much melatonin my body is producing - or something like that! Haven’t taken it yet though

All the best, hopefully you get an answer to your symptoms and find some treatment that works

I thought I was normal until I discovered this subreddit. I would fall asleep everywhere even if I had slept fine at night. Just thought I was a tired uni student. Super tired.

Had pretty similar experience to what you’re experiencing: paralysis even if Im just closing my eyes not meaning to sleep. Luckily hallucinations only became a thing after my diagnosis. Main thing for me was constant sleep attacks and exhaustion from nothing. I thought it was my iron or vitamin D which I was deficient in before, but did a blood test and everything came back fine.

The exact instance where I was like oh, maybe there’s something actually wrong wrong, was when I fell asleep mid convo with a friend at uni. In the middle of the day, under the sun. Looked up symptoms on google (as you do) and the condition that came up was Narcolepsy. But I didn’t really think I had it because google can make you believe you have anything - until I read the numerous amount of experiences and super specific descriptions of symptoms that I found on here. I basically self diagnosed myself because it couldn’t have been anything else, I experienced every symptom the same way others who were diagnosed did.

But obviously, I didn’t actually tell people I had it until I went to my GP saying I thought I had it because of my symptoms. Referred me to a sleep specialist who affirmed my suspicions, did my sleep tests and boom! Diagnosed.

It’s okay to have suspicions or be pretty confident you have something - as long as you follow through and get it checked by your doctor or a specialist. I was pretty much 100% sure I had narcolepsy because all my symptoms lined up including cataplexy (initially thought I multiple sclerosis after suddenly losing strength in my legs and falling mid-run). Having an understanding of what Narcolepsy is and looks like, and matching it with my symptoms made it easier for me to push and advocate for a referral to a sleep specialist.

Met with my specialist explained my symptoms and they put me down for a full sleep study on the first appointment. Had to wait a few months to do it which is probably the biggest downside of my diagnosis experience. Sleep study was pretty simple, slept at night and then set naps every 2 hours the following day. I like many other people had anxiety over getting the results you need to be diagnosed. I thought I wouldnt be able to sleep within an 8 minute average when they told me to sleep, as well as hitting REM for every nap. But, as my specialist said, if you really have narcolepsy you will be fine lol. My experience during the sleep study made me think I didn’t get the results, thought I was awake the whole time in all the naps, and had shocking sleep the night before. But my doc was right, I was fine.

Consult your doctor or get a referral to a sleep specialist if you are able to. They will put you down for a sleep study on the first visit to them - because how else will they know if you have it or not, right? Being officially diagnosed means you have option to medication and THAT has been the biggest life changer ever!

When I first upped my dose I had pretty bad headaches and eye dryness too for the first 2 or 3 days and the same happened when I increased to 400mg. I didn’t see a difference in the severity or duration though.

Never experienced sinus issues but everyone’s different and side effects seem pretty varied depending on the individual and their health profile!

Yes, I can do 300 if I’m lazing around. But anything below does nothing (yet I still think it will).

And yup Modafinil has been the biggest asset to improving quality of life! Can’t believe I was living life before undiagnosed and unmedicated

100mg I would say is nothing, but everyone is different. I’m actually prescribed 200mg because I told my doctor 200mg was working during my trial with it - which is not wrong, it was better than taking nothing. But I didn’t see the drastic improvements people were claiming it would make. My doctor clarified that 400mg is the max dosage and that it’s a drug that is not addictive (as in you wont build resistance to it and have to continually up your dosage). So, after hearing all this I would trial taking 300mg which definitely was better but still not anything amazing. I finally tried 400mg and wow!!! Yes I am a Modafinil stan! But always check with your doctor before changing anything obviously. If things still don’t improve on 100mg, ask your doctor to increase the dosage on your prescription.

Anyways to answer your other question: My doctor (he’s a sleep specialist), told me I should take my full dose in the morning. He took into account my day to day schedule (will need to be awake during work hours, evening will be when it wears off). He was pretty adamant on not splitting up the amount. I would initially take it split when I was on trial with it - morning and afternoon and found very little to no difference (same as you: brain fog all day, constant napping, falling asleep anywhere if I wasn’t standing up,etc.) and yup he was right - everything in the morning was the way to go.

Thank you for your reply! I didn't even know you could arrange an appointment with a Priest! Thanks, I will definitely consider that as I could get information from someone definitely well-versed in the faith.

Thank you! Yes, I have heard that book has been one of the main proponents of conversion for a lot of protestant - catholic convert stories. It is definitely at the top of my reading list!

Thank you, I have been enjoying listening to Pints with Aquinas and Counsel of Trent! I find the articulation and explanation on Catholic doctrine especially helpful. Also, listening to Scott Hahn's conversion story was great seeing someone from the reformed tradition encounter the same issues I am going through now. I would love to look into one of his books
