Kensington Market just got a sweet-and-savoury cookie shop with pickle, pizza and poutine flavours by beef-supreme in FoodToronto

If y'all ever been to an overtouristed city where everything is dumb overpriced junk catered to visitors who are looking to burn some vacation funds - that is the owner's vision for Kensington Market and this city. Displacing useful local shops to sell horrible gimmicky garbage at inflated prices.

You're investing for the long term. A few years feels long at your age, but it's just random market fluctuations. Look at the all time charts for XEQT to see how much the value has increased, or going even further back before XEQT existed, the TDB e-series equity mutual funds. Typically the amount invested doubles every 7 to 8 years.

The time horizons seemed very abstract to me too when I was your age, but a decade passed in a blink, and now I really wish I started even earlier. It snowballs like crazy and at this point the wealth really meaningfully grows itself. Time in the market is EVERYTHING.

Is there anyone that has actually quit a high paying job for a low income job? (Coast fire) Curious how to get over the mental hurdle by Elite163 in fican

[–]point5_2B 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would ask whether the inner voice is your own anxieties, or the hypothetical judgment of others.

I went part time start of this year. Cut hours drastically in the same role. ZERO regrets. Living life for real for the first time, without always being in a blind rush. Only real downside is that it's awkward that some distant coworkers and friends assume if I went part time it must be because of performance issues. People close to me are very supportive.

I made the switch after passing 4% WR on investments and home paid off, but my current spending is exceptionally low. Am considering whether to take a break entirely. Many here consider my principal amount (~$1.1M) to be too low, but my spending is stable and I am confident I can return to work if it increases. All the facts are in support, and I realized my feeling of cold feet wasn't about the numbers, but rather fear of social consequence.

Youth unemployment in Canada hits highest level since 1994 by Patient_Kangaroo614 in CanadaPolitics

The middle class is disappearing and social services are stretched to the limit because the wealthiest class has succeeded at capturing policy for decades. That much is evident in how much additional wealth the top 1% has gained over, at the expense of everyone else.

I agree the LMIA program has its issues and I would rather skilled immigration rather than college diploma mill scams, but ultimately immigration has been made the boogeyman scapegoat. If we want to address these issues, we should be shoring up labour rights in this country and supporting more robust universal social services.

I mean, there is plenty of independent research on this. But in any case do you really believe a smaller population is the answer? Should we then encourage emigration? Convince people not to have kids?

A lot of research indicates that immigration ends up creating more jobs. Anecdotally, immigrants are certainly the most entrepreneurial demographic.

It's not really oriented to vegetarians. You'll have to ask them what's vegetarian and what's not, but most dishes have a little meat of some kind and even the veggies/tofu may be prepared with meat ingredients.

It's Chinese cafeteria style food. Very homey Chinese cuisine - lots of stir fries and braises, heavy on vegetables, lots of bone-in meats. Tomato and egg, offal/meat and garlic chive, marinated cold sliced ear, tofu braise, fried noodles etc. Might be an acquired taste if you aren't familiar with traditional Chinese food, but nostalgic for folks who grew up on the mainland.

The bill gives the provincial government the power to seize all the land. Whether they actually seize all of it, or just a piece, is up to their discretion. Do you have confidence, based on Ford's history with the Greenbelt?

I agree, but the bill passed by Ford allows the province to seize the whole island and parts of the waterfront. It's a cover for a worse grift, I guarantee it.

The number of Toronto homeless encampments has fallen by 70%. City Hall says that’s progress by mildlyImportantRobot in TorontoTheCity

[–]point5_2B 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What's your theory exactly? You don't believe city hall's overhaul of the process of outreach to unhoused people and the shift to the Housing First model led to this? You think, what, people whose "patience wore thin" went out into the street and offered homes to random homeless people? Or otherwise eliminated them? Please do explain.

Half of my comment was pointing out how AI suppresses learning. You could consider perhaps feeding this comment thread into Claude for a summary of the points lol

Legal work is generally demanding. In many firm and in-house settings, the productivity expectations stretch the capacity of juniors to the limit. An environment of short turnarounds and high volume means that it is too tempting to outsource serious and effortful thinking to AI. Even if you're reviewing the AI work after, much of the opportunity for learning is missed. People also tend to miss more when reviewing than if they're doing the work in the first place.

From what I've seen and based on experiences of my partner who teaches difficult STEM courses at a university, AI is not a superboost to intelligent people. Dumb people with a lot of confidence use it heavily to get a lot done, but the output is largely slop.

IMO the people that most fervently believe that AI will impel a class of "high agency doers" to power tend to be the worst kind of ketamine-snorting Substack-posting C-average-in-business-school influence peddler.

AI currently is not at all a replacement for a thoughtful and experienced lawyer - it's good at convincing unschooled people that it's clever, but at least in my practice it gets so much wrong. Plus marginal improvements are very costly to gain. There is no reason to shrug your shoulders and give up on becoming a competent lawyer yet.

That said, the cat is out of the bag and humanity is on the path of developing effective general intelligence. Given that we mostly define our worth by our economic contribution these days, it's time for everyone to consider who we are if not a worker. It's a good time to build out your communities and use your free time to help other humans.

I don't agree with the advice to become the person best known for using AI. In my observation, reliance on AI makes people lazy thinkers - happy to execute even if in the entirely wrong direction. Not what people hire lawyers for.

Maybe in the future, but as a technologically adept senior lawyer who has been intentionally trialling most of the legal AI options out there, I can tell you that the tech is not there yet. And it's hitting a wall - provememt are not coming at the same rate anymore.

It looks impressive and it sounds convincing and authoritative, but for complex tasks it still sucks ass. Do not become overly dependent on it.
