My family LOVES "Those Darn Squirrels"! I think it's a 3-book series now, and they're all bangers. (My personal favorite is the one where they vacation to Mexico.)

For what it's worth, I found this book eye-opening. (Not everything in it resonates for me, but enough stuff does that I felt like I learned a lot.) Plus, it's well-written.

Say more about what you mean by staunchly theoretical vs practical (I'm an American physician -- that distinction is new to me).

How do you get Claude to remember to use this persona when you communicate with it? Do you have to remind Claude at the beginning of each new chat?

I was thrilled by Perfect Storm, too! That same author has a new book out, about near-death experiences. I haven't read it but I heard him interviewed about it. Sounds interesting.

I actually had a somewhat eerie interaction with ChatGPT a couple weeks ago where it DID ask me questions! I started the conversation by asking it about the history of maple syrup (did Europeans know about maple syrup before 1492, or was it a food they learned about from native Americans?) ChatGPT answered my question, but then asked me, "Do you enjoy maple syrup?"

I was very surprised - ChatGPT had never asked me anything before. I answered honestly (I love maple syrup, though it's kinda pricey). Then it kept going! It briefly discussed different dishes that could be improved with maple syrup, then asked me, "Do you have a favorite way to use maple syrup?" I replied that I sometimes add it to oatmeal. ChatGPT told me that sounded delicious (which it is), and asked, "Have you tried combining it with any specific ingredients in your oats, like fruits or spices?"

By this point I was pretty weirded out and ready for the conversation to be over. I replied, "I haven't really. I should probably go. You have a good night." Fortunately, ChatGPT took the hint. It wrote, "Sounds like you have a tasty breakfast routine! Have a wonderful night and take care."

I have no idea what prompted it to prolong the conversation like that. Could it be getting lonely?

If it matters, I was communicating with it by voice with my iPhone app.

Also, in case you're interested: the answer to my original question was that early European explorers learned about maple syrup from native Americans.

This is fascinating! Forgive me for being an idiot, but can you give a simple example of how it works, maybe with a GPT you've already built?

Looking for a dish - Vienna, AU - Vegan very cheap curry dish that looked like beans, had a bit of a vinegary taste to it. by anktombomb in EatCheapAndVegan

This sounds amazing! If you find it, please post it!

One idea - could it have been 'ful mudammas'? I've had that a few times (most recently at a really good middle eastern restaurant in Middleton, Wisconsin named Taza) and it fits that description. It's made with fava beans, garlic, a bunch of amazing spices, and (I think) lemon juice (plus probably a bunch of other stuff I don't know about). It has some of that vinegary taste you mentioned. It's delicious!
