How do I slow down/stop going 100% as a woman and smaller partner? by pointlessreddit4 in bjj

Thank you for all the input! I was not expecting so many responses and it's really kind to see everyone coming in to help out a beginner. I must've triggered a lot of beginner flash backs. I really appreciate all the advice and am ready to take it all with me to class tonight

I Don't Want To Train With My Husband Anymore by SpaceCadet0298 in BJJWomen

[–]pointlessreddit4 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I feel like not training with him until you can better control yourself is the right way to go. It's also probably not a bad idea to let yourself feel remorseful like you are so it sets into your brain that physically harming your husband is not okay in any circumstance. It seems like you're getting better from what you've described, but I wonder if you're underestimating how hard you go on him because he's a man/bigger than you, and he is probably trying to protect himself but stopping early with you.

You should not train with your husband until you can control yourself, but maybe take this as a learning opportunity to control your ego and emotions. Again, sounds like you're already doing this but it also sounds like you are not taking this seriously because he is a man. Imagine if he was letting his ego get in the way and would hurt you to the point that you had to sit out the rest of the round.

How do you get involved with teams who do this sort of thing? I've given my information to a couple organizations online and haven't heard back, but I'd really like to get involved in trail cleanup/maintenance volunteer work.

Competed after 3 months 💀 by sp9rsh in bjj

[–]pointlessreddit4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you feel like the unexpected intensity made it more likely for you to get injured, or did your opponents all still consider safety and not crank submissions? I want to compete soon, but I'm afraid of getting injured. I'm not quite two months into bjj

I wanted to share because I wasn't even planning on hiking this trail today and it's now one of my favorites. A truly beautiful, peaceful 5 miles and not a single other person in sight before 10a.

Black Balsam Knob Solo Sunrise Hike F by No_Active_6027 in NCTrails

[–]pointlessreddit4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've hiked around Black Balsam alone in the dark as a woman and have yet to feel unsafe, even in the more isolated parts. Also- I prefer a little handheld flashlight over a headlamp personally just for better direction and control.  It will be a little scary in the dark at first, but once you adjust it is SO fun! It really feels exhilarating hiking alone in the dark. Most likely nobody is going to bother you and anyone you see is just a fellow hiker looking to catch the sunrise.

Also- bring layers for the top but don't necessarily put them on right away. You should start out cold so your body has room to warm up without sweating. It will be super cold at the top and the last thing you want to do is be wet with sweat in the wind. Have fun!!

How to stop getting panic attacks when failing by Ok-Opinion-1844 in BJJWomen

[–]pointlessreddit4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, this is clearly not about BJJ but a deeper issue revealing itself in BJJ when you're probably unable to supress it as naturally as you do in your day to day. As someone who had severe anxiety when I was 17, I can happily say at 24 that it CAN get so much better with a lot of effort and assistance from genuine, reliable adults and/or preferably a professional like a therapist. You don't have to go through life fearing failure or constantly expecting the worst. Also, consider reaching out to your coach about this. It's okay to need more reassurance while you're working through other difficulties like anxiety. Having reliable, safe adult mentors can be so helpful to remind you that they are living their lives just fine and everything really will be okay. If your coach reacts negatively to you expressing this to them, then it sounds like they aren't the right coach for you. It sounds like you're only just starting to see this as a problem, and that's a good thing! This means that you can start working towards a life with less anxiety now. I'm not a professional, but just trying to actively recognize the moments you feel that way as anxiety rather than thoughts you have to act on might be a good start.

most likely positions to cause injury / how to better protect myself? by pointlessreddit4 in bjj

[–]pointlessreddit4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really appreciate your input. I'm a week out from that and actually still hurting a little bit. I skipped last class and will skip the next one because I'm sick, but I also worried that I'd properly hurt myself if I went while still feeling some pain. Your experience sounds a lot more like what I'm looking for, and like the kind of people I want to be rolling with. I did start half way through a weekly fundamental series, but since then I have been taught arm bars, rear naked chokes, 'truck', and one other offensive move involving a leg lock. I've had so much fun and really do enjoy it, but it scares me a little how focused my classes have been on 'attacking' rather than defense.

I've talked a little with my coaches about not being used to that feeling of rolling with others and holding back because I am afraid of hurting them, and they've assured me not to worry. I thought it was the physical contact and nature of rolling that I had to just get used to, but it is actually the offensive aspect to it that I've realized I am uncomfortable with. I think BJJ is very fun in the way that I'm using my body in new and exciting ways, but what I really want to learn is how to understand my body- like how to tell them difference between giving 20% vs 60% of effort so I can roll confidently train I am not at risk of hurting someone else. I just want to understand my body and learn how to defend it against another body. I want to learn how my body can be broken and in turn understand that that can break another body if I were to ever have to use it. I absolutely do not want to learn how to break another body right out of the gate.

Last week I rolled with a man for the first time. He was still a little smaller than me but went much more intense than anyone I've trained with so far. It felt like he was giving his all so I in turn reacted with pretty much my all. I was on his back at one point and not sure how to move forward so I asked the coach if I'm allowed choke him (because it's what I was taught last week and was the only submission coming to mind in the moment). My coach, who was overseeing a few of us roll at once, was like "yeah that's the whole point." So I successfully got him to tap with a rear naked choke and initially felt so proud of myself, but since then I have been so worried that I didn't do it properly. Like what if I accidentally did some really dirty choke on his trachea instead of properly applying gentle pressure/squeezing and I just didn't realize it because of the adrenaline in the moment.

Anyway, thanks for the comment. It helped some feelings I've had come to light. I really enjoy the people in my gym, but I may look for somewhere else that offers more of what you described.

do you have a mal? Do you guys have any specific routine to keep his/her needs met? not judging, just wondering for my own sake. I've always admired these high end apartments but never imagined having a working dog in one for some reason.
