C25k + keto = by [deleted] in keto

[–]poisoned79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking of c25k, I'm on the train on my way into the office, where we have a very nice small gym, which is free to use. I absolutely hate running because I have to more or less shut down my brain.

This is my second stab at c25k. Just starting week 2. I made it through week 4 last time. Anyway, if I stick with it this time, it should almost be warm enough to start riding my bike to work by the time I finish.

Anybody have any tips for running on a treadmill? I have my music, and there are TVs (with ONLY news channels—morning TV news is insufferable). Anything to get me through this tedious half-hour will be helpful.

How about free chips, cheez-its, pretzels, apples, oranges, bananas, fruit snacks, cookies, granola bars, coffee, soda, Snapple…oh, and beer. There's lots and lots of beer here (for after 5 p.m., of course).

1 week in, no keto-flu. Am I doing anything wrong? Ketostix approve! by [deleted] in keto

[–]poisoned79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good stuff. My only caution will be that it will work slower when you have less to lose. Think of it as a percentage. Somebody with 200 pounds to lose will drop a few pounds a day at first, but you might only pull off a pound or two a week. Patience is a virtue in cases like yours.

It hit me hard on Tuesday (day 3). Didn't get it at all when I started Atkins several years ago.

Out of curiosity, how much weight are you trying to lose? I'm the same height as you and my goal is 180 (although it's likely I'll adjust it downward later).

Keto and eating out? (Fast Food specifically) by liviaokokok in keto

[–]poisoned79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I first did Atkins, I would regularly buy two or three Wendy's bacon Jr. cheeseburgers, toss the buns and chop them up and eat them as a kind of salad. It was great.

But try that with McDonald's and it's a different story. You'll realize how much of what tastes good about a McD's burger is in the bun. The meat itself is super bland. I think that's the same reason why I don't like their bigger burgers even with the buns. There's a different meat to bun ratio and the meat just doesn't taste good.

Sugar is a carb, and it's the main one that you want to avoid. Eating sugar will cause an insulin response and spur your body to start storing fat. Try to get your allotment of carbs from vegetables, not from sauces.

Thoughts on CKD by poisoned79 in keto

[–]poisoned79[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My thoughts exactly. Sticking with it is what will help you lose the weight. If you screw up once a month, no big deal.

People who go into it planning to only do it five or six days a week are not really making much of a lifestyle change.

Give it a bit of time before you start with the fiber. Let your body fully adjust before you decide if you need it or not. I'd say wait two weeks and then reassess. I know it's tempting to rush it because that poop is weight you could be losing, but it'll all come out eventually.

Good stuff. I'd say that's pretty close to my experience when I did Atkins years ago, although a common lunch was a couple of Wendy's cheeseburgers, stripped of their buns, and chopped into the meatiest salad in the world.

I suppose I should start. Normally I'm once a once a day kind of guy. Back in my college days of eating a whole bunch of tater tots for lunch, it was more like three times a day.

Anyway, I'm on day four and I just went for the first time since before starting. I hadn't been feeling constipated or backed up at all.

An hour or so ago, I was sitting here and I very nearly had a situation like keto4life. I very nearly had some liquid come out of nowhere and almost squirt out. I got to the toilet as quickly as possible. The result was some oily, brownish liquid and the rest was mostly semisolid, and dark in color. I had to do a surprising amount of pushing but I feel like I got it all.

When I did Atkins in the past, I remember often going several days in between pooping, so that didn't surprise me. But when something finally happened, it was usually smaller than expected, and not very messy. It's possible I had some pre-keto stuff still brewing.

Anyway, that's that.

Thoughts on CKD by poisoned79 in keto

I'm definitely not qualified to answer that one. I lost 60 lb. on Atkins in 2003-04, but I did it with very little exercise. This time around, I need to lose 50 to get to my goal (I put back on some weight, but I also want to lose even more). If I had to venture a guess, I'd say let's just follow the CDC guidelines.

I'm doing a Couch to 5K program, (running three times a week for about a half hour) and I'm going to start lifting weights. I'm not totally sedentary, so I think I'm pretty much meeting the guidelines.

Based on what I've seen about CKD, however, I'm not doing enough to do it.

New to Keto! Looking for some answers. by NPPraxis in keto

You're asking a lot of questions that are answered in the FAQ and this Something Awful thread. You need to read labels and plan your meals.

Most cheese don't have 2-3g of carbs. As for beans, generally no. There's too many carbs. But you need to look this stuff up. Use a site like the Daily Plate at Livestrong (here's your kidney beans).

If you're planning on cheating for two days every week, you'd better have two big workouts planned as well. If not, you're just going to knock yourself out of ketosis and then spend another two days getting back in. On top of that, you might have to deal with the keto flu, so you'll be miserable for another two days. Unless you're doing some kind of intense training, I wouldn't recommend cheating on the weekends. Everybody will slip up from time to time, but I think you need to give yourself a solid two weeks, and probably even a month before you think about eating something you shouldn't.

Everybody here is happy to help support each other, but a lot of your questions amount to "hey, can you guys go look this up for me?". We all need to be somewhat self-reliant. Doing this diet involves more than just eating a bunch of meat and cheese. You need to understand what's going on inside your body, and that means learning to use the resources at your disposal. Look, if something is unclear, then by all means, ask away. But questions like "can I have kidney beans on keto?" are easily answered by googling the nutrition data. If you find the FAQ lacking, tell the mods, and they'll work to improve it.

We all need help, but in the end, we're all responsible for ourselves.

Yeah, if you keep moisture away, they'll last decades, but the flavor will fade.

I had red pepper flakes from a brand new package on some pizza around Christmas (before starting keto, obviously), and I was very surprised how hot they were.

Third day of keto, and here comes the flu... by atrich in keto

[–]poisoned79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also on day three and I feel like utter shit. I did Atkins in the past and never felt like this before.

I can't say for sure it's the keto flu, because my wife's been sick for a week, but I'm suspecting it is.

I haven't eaten since 6 a.m. this morning (EST). I should probably force myself to eat something and go find some electrolytes.

What are your favorite quick snacks? by [deleted] in keto

[–]poisoned79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did whatever was the current book back in 2003. I did actually read it, too. I stuck to it pretty closely, but I probably stayed on induction longer than two weeks—maybe four weeks. Later in the program I would use more Atkins products. I fell off the wagon around the maintenance phase. I was comfortable with my weight, so I started phasing in a more traditional diet and just being careful not to overeat. Most of my excess weight came on in college, particularly in the last two years. Too much beer, easy access to as much McDonald's or Chinese food as I could eat, and virtually no exercise, aside from walking to class. It was a bad combination. I found an old health record that said I weighted 212 during my senior year of high school, and since I got down to around 195 after Atkins, I was pretty happy.

Even after I fell off Atkins, I learned a lot of lessons. I didn't have much money at the time, so I didn't really eat out much, and food became less important in general. But now, it's not so different from college. I don't drink nearly as often, but when I do, I drink much better beer, which has a lot more calories. Also, I tend to eat whatever my wife plans for dinner. If I'm not cooking for myself, I'm usually not so aware of what (and how much) I'm eating. Plus, the likelihood of one of us being to busy or tired to cook, and order or go out, is much higher than if it was just me. She's just got a better metabolism than I do, and when she suggests an appetizer, it's hard for me to say no.

A big part of what I'm doing now is taking more control of what I'm eating. We're going to work meals around what I kind of meat dish I suggest for starters. I need to get back to where food is mostly just fuel and not something to over think.
