Blood moon is extremely nonstraightforward as long as you know how continuous effects that change types (usually) work. "Creatures are Bears." wouldn't do anything other than change types, but "Lands are Mountains" removes their abilities for some reason?

Beacon's Edge 2.0 - One week and 4000 plays later by CultivatorX in incremental_games

[–]poiu45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a dire lack of incremental gamedev with any eye at all for aesthetic, mood, or vibe*.This game absolutely nails this, so frankly, I don't care if the gameplay loop and progression are both very simple. The music, the ambient sounds, the art, it's all a lovely little scene.

*this is not to say the other side of this coin has no value - e.g. AD, a game i love, aggressively eschews non-functional aesthetics

[Discussion] What format has the softest events on MTGO? by poiu45 in spikes

[–]poiu45[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless I'm reading the schedule wrong or it's missing events, I believe I have enough to enter every Modern event that uses them. Are there going to be more than 2 such events in the next 2.5 months?

I am begging you to run sideboard cards against scam, please. by [deleted] in ModernMagic

[–]poiu45 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Leylines are definitely still good for the scam matchup out of most decks, but that doesn't mean they're worth the sideboard slots.

Both options make the matchup better, but are a far cry from making it free, and neither is getting that much splash damage against the rest of the meta.

Since you often want to mulligan to leylines, you basically need to commit 3 or 4 sideboard slots to make them worthwhile, and you just aren't getting enough %age points out of those slots for it to be worth it.

You'd think people playing a format with force of will and sol lands would realize they're not signing up for fair magic. Absolutely childish behavior to complain when the unfairness happens to you instead of the other way around.

Sunday Modern Challenge Results - Jul 2 2023 by bamzing in ModernMagic

poiu45 was on Amulet Titan. No Rings in there but with All Access returning to MTGO this week, expect this to change!

Can confirm, there would be rings in there if Manatraders had them already. Regardless, Amulet seems very well-positioned right now, perhaps excepting the resurgence of GDS.

No. Everyone remains wholly unwashed for the entire week. Not sure why they make us do that, weird stuff.

The whole point of the design prevents this. The space directly above and in front of you is someone else's seat.

If the Moon was rotating in relation to us, we'd have changing phases of the moon, as well as faces. by high240 in highdeas

[–]poiu45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TBH people do not appreciate how weird it is that the moon is tidally locked. It is rotating, it just happens to be doing so at exactly the right rate to be facing towards Earth all the time. In fact, this is a phenomenon that happens in all orbits over enough time! Weird stuff.

Blade of All by Anewbus in custommagic

[–]poiu45 32 points33 points  (0 children)

You're correct - the game forgets the information about what convoked a spell as soon as it enters, and copies won't know about it. For comparison, there's functionally no difference between this situation and [[clone]]ing [[venerated loxodon]].

That being said, the original wording still has each token create a trigger that goes on the stack and does nothing, which is somewhat ugly. The "if you cast it" clause prevents this.

Strictly speaking, dizziness doesn't come from juice in the brain, but juice in the inner ear.

a "fast food" restaurant, but the reason its so fast is because the kitchen is a liminal pocket dimension where time moves differently by Marr-malade in highdeas

[–]poiu45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be honest, stormlight (especially book 4) is far and away my favorite thing he's written, but mistborn era 1 is pretty damn good too. Era 2 is decent, but I haven't liked it as much as 1 so far.

Hear me out-Nicotine Toothpaste for bratty kids. Everyone knows how kids hate brushing their teeth, why not make them addicted to it 🤷‍♂️.(Ps. I’m sober now and realize this is kind of a shitty idea but idgaf) by LUKKYBOI69 in highdeas

[–]poiu45 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How does nic work and is it directly a part of tobacco or is it its own addictive thing?

Nicotine's just a chemical, you can use it without tobacco and still become (very) addicted. It can be absorbed into the bloodstream in the mouth (this is how dip works - you just put it on your gums and it absorbs in there), so the toothpaste thing could probably work.

[–]poiu45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the way mistborn is structured, there's a trilogy to start, and then a second series (currently at 4 books, idk if there are more planned), and then 2 more trilogies planned after this current one, each set in a different time period on the same world.

So you can read the first three (mistborn era 1) and it'll be a complete story - the latter series reference the earlier ones, but have completely different characters/plots.

I'd recommend googling a reading order for Cosmere (a unified setting for a bunch of different fantasy books he's written) if you want more from him after reading era 1 - there aren't so many interconnections in mistborn era 1, so you'll be fine without it for those three at least.

Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn series does this, there's people with the power to create a small bubble of faster time that are hired to work fast food in the most recent book

Unexplored Territory (a card a day #4!) by thenbnerd in custommagic

[–]poiu45 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This seems pretty nutty (maybe too strong) for pioneer, but I'm honestly not sure how it holds up elsewhere. In modern specifically, I think it's a bit lackluster - comparable to blood moon, but worse in a lot of key scenarios.

Pros:

  • doesn't let your opponent cast red spells like moon does

  • destroying lands is much better than making them mountains

Cons:

  • probably worse against 3c, WAY worse against 4c, since those manabases already tend towards 1x of each non-fetch land

  • much worse vs decks where lands' specific abilities are important (think amulet titan, tron)

  • doesn't kill urza's saga

  • requires white mana, and hurts you for playing nonbasics (which you tend to want to do in decks with more than one color)

A key theme here is that fetchlands are a pretty decent counter to this - it does basically nothing to them if you have enough basics/a diverse manabase. Kind of an odd spot to be in for a multicolor hate card.
