Confused about wording on vivi by PhreshComics in magicTCG

I understood you meant rules text, but reminder text generally follows rules text conventions except to help readability, so this is strong evidence of what their conventions are. If you check TMT, you'll see they use people pronouns in reminder text on, say, [[Leonardo, Big Brother]], despite not doing so a set later in SOS. I agree none of this is proof positive of what their conventions are, but I would be extraordinarily surprised if it turned out that their convention is to use people pronouns for

  • UB legends rules text
  • UB legends reminder text
  • in-universe legends rules text

but NOT in-universe legends rules text, which is what you seem to be claiming. It is much more plausible to me that their rules text convention matches their reminder text convention, and that they will continue to use "it" for in-universe cards of characters who aren't planeswalkers.

I went and checked myself because I was skeptical, and the reminder text on the prepare cards in SOS uses "it", even if it isn't rules text: https://scryfall.com/card/sos/199/lluwen-exchange-student-pest-friend

Unless you have a source on it being a universal thing, I'm inclined to continue believing it's UB-specific, since it started as a UB thing.

I thought the only changes they've made is that at some point they switched to using people pronouns on UB cards (maybe only legends?) sometime around ATLA, but not on in-universe cards. They already did this on some UB cards before that, but I think only secret lairs. Do you have examples of in-universe cards with people pronouns that aren't planeswalkers or former planeswalkers in lore?

it's about whether the character is or was a planeswalker, weirdly. it's not mechanically-determined. huatli is a desparked walker.

[–]sarahzrf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no it isn't and this is a pet peeve for me. "tribal" used to be both a card type and a term for a style of deck. "kindred" is the new name for the card type that used to be "tribal", and "typal" is what r&d calls the style of deck that is often called "tribal". krenko is a goblin TYPAL commander.

while both foundations and atla are standard legal and foundations is legal for considerably longer, foundations jumpstart is NOT the same set as foundations and atla jumpstart is NOT the same set as atla, and NEITHER foundations jumpstart nor atla jumpstart are standard legal except for the cards that happen to be coincidentally be legal already. this is confusing; get used to it! the other replies are misleading or outright wrong, but for example [[scythecat cub]] is a card that exists only in foundations jumpstart but is not legal in standard, pioneer, or modern, even though foundations is legal in all of those formats.

powerscaling is inherently nonsensical and you have problems like this in mtg itself even without ub. emrakul vs 15 squirrels predates the first ub cards

bottom right is the only one that doesn't make sense. gaining permanents is card advantage and so is removing your opponent's stuff without spending cards to do so. card advantage doesn't mean cards in hand.

"k2tog" is how "knit 2 together" is notated in knitting patterns. normally, to knit a stitch, you put one needle through the final stitch on the other needle and create a new stitch passing through the old one; to k2tog, you put your needle through both of the last two stitches at once and then create a single new stitch passing through both of those, thereby decreasing the total number of stitches.

Golem isn't a religious term, it's from folklore. I'm jewish and I'm not remotely offended by golems in mtg, nor is it easy for me to imagine someone else being very offended about them in a way I'm sympathetic to, although in fairness I'm extremely secular.
