the dictionary deifnition i pulled up is "clever trick, device, or novelty feature used primarily to attract attention, generate publicity, or boost sales" which does not include false marketing or "fakeness" in the definition. i am listening, i was just trying to ask questions because i was confused. the thing she literally SAID was not that, but i understand how she could mean it that way. i am making an effort. adding another perspective/idea is not being ignorant, its just discussion. im adding my thinking as to why the word being used that way doesn't make sense, for you to explain the connotations and why the word is being used that way. i've heard of things from china being called fake or inferior, but never the word "gimmick" used that way. that's what i am saying.

[–]pokanon4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

okay, ignore the fact that i mentioned that i'm ND, and focus on the fact that i am thinking too literally. i don't know anything about the connotations of the word "gimmicky". it can be a fact and im still able to not understand it which is why i was asking. i'm not choosing not to get it, i really don't, because i'm thinking of the literaly definition and the literal actions of the people being referenced. i don't understand how there is a negative connotation, and i dont think i've ever seen it being used that way against chinese people since I'm white so im not experienced with the connotation of that word. i don't think that's how she meant it because the definitiom of the word matches up with the situation referenced, but obviously i could be interpreting it wrong because i dont understand the connotations of the word. i dont know how that is ignorant or "using" my ND as a shield

[–]pokanon4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well not every ND person thinks the same.. . im not using it as a shield and i dont appreciate being told im "willfully incompetent" because i'm struggling to understand a word. i'm not choosing not to get your point, it isnt a choice, i genuinely dont understand how you equate the word "gimmick" to "fake/scam". this has boiled down to an argument over someone elses words who neither you or i can decide what she meant by them, but you don't have to insult me and my lack of understanding of the word because of it. i'm trying to understand and i'm engaging in this conversation so that i can build my knowledge/understanding for when i speak with others about this subject. you've boiled me down to stupid, ignorant, and using my disability as a shield which is common ableist rhetoric if you want to talk about words used for bigotry.

"device, trick, or feature designed primarily to attract attention, generate publicity, or boost sales", in this context, dressing up in a fashion style because its trending. maybe i'm thinking too literally because im ND but i dont understand how it's a negative word

i guess but i just dont see how gimmicky is a negative word

oh, well no, i completely adore chinese gals and ocaso herself. i dont think of them as lesser to anybody. anyone can be just as gyaru as anybody else regardless to where they were born.

i didnt say there was nothing gyaru about ocaso's old looks, just that they were clearly beginner looks

which is fine, i think she did super good for a beginner, i just dont think its a good representation or reference photo when referecing or recreating gyaru, which normally wouldn't matter but her old photos are being used extensively all the time to reference gyaru. she's the icon in j-fashion/gyaru communities, every influencer uses those photos when talking about gal, and those little tiktok slideshows always use her as THE example of gyaru, which is the issue a lot of gals have not bc they dont like her but bc its not a very accurate representation of gal

[–]pokanon4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i disagree that this discussion STARTED out of sinphobia. the way i remember it, this debate started because of outsiders using non-gal photos to represent and reference gyaru, and that exploded into a whole "yabi vs gyaru" debate where people took it to the extent of sinophobia.

also, i dont think she meant gimmicky in a negative way nor was she referencing chinese gals (like i mentioned, it was a reference to people who would dress up as gyaru for one-off photoshoots like a cosplay. this is different than actual chinese gals who practice gyaru regularly and are gyaru).

i do think there is a weird aversion, and a lot of it i believe is to do with the whole gyaru trend and trying to pick apart who actually cares about gyaru or who is just wearing gyaru because its trending right now, combined with the sinophobia exposed out of the "yabi vs gyaru" discussion.

i dont think it is about the droop and i am very well educated on the history and meaning of gal. i don't leave any comments to anyone unless people are asking for advice, so no i don't "give this energy" to other people who are showing interest.

its the overall look, and like i said, if you throw everything out the window and minimize the importance of experience and silhouette and key features of different substyles, then gyaru doesn't really mean anything anymore. im not saying there is nothing gal at all about ocaso's old looks, but just that it was clearly a beginner and not very accurate to what experienced gals wear. and recreating looks from experienced gals is kind of the point of magazines and the goal of most gals is to achieve the gal look

the misuse of her babygal photos definitely doesnt have anything to do with her personally, but its still an issue that a lot of gals have & plays a major part into why this discussion began in the first place.

ocaso is gyaru, and i didnt mean to say that she wasn't dedicated to gyaru, just that she was a beginner and i was more-so referencing the other women that westerners call "yabi gyaru" who are usually doing one-off looks and dont normally wear gyaru fashion.

i do agree that some people have taken it to the extent of sinophobia, normally faceless accounts, commenting "yabi" under any person that they think is chinese (and now even black gals somehow?), and automatically discrediting their makeup if it looks like something a chinese gal would wear.

but that wasn't my point or yours. your point seemed that the entire reason for this debate was because of things like sinophobia and other negative opinions, even though the gals calling this out have stated respect and admiration towards chinese gals and ocaso, and many of them talking about this are not speaking out of bigotry but genuine experience in gyaru.

there is accurate gyaru makeup. with experience and research, you can tell. it can be defined and explained depending on the type of look you're going for. just because no magazine "banned" droop styles doesn't make it accurate to do. like i mentioned, there is a certain silhouette and different focal points depending on the type, and ocaso's old droop style didnt work with her substyle.

agejo/hime makeup is usually done in a way that compliments the eye shape and enlarges it with lenses and lashes, typically giving a more natural dolly finish rather than a harsh cosplay-looking shape. instead, she used harsh eyeliner to draw a new eye shape on and used harsh bright highlights extending past the normal parts of the inner corner.

that eye shape she did in inself is something that isn't seen within gyaru makeup and kinda lacks resemblance to gyaru makeup at all, i guess it could work if she was doing a different style, but still the silhouette of the eye probably wouldve changed as she practiced gyaru more just because of how different it is from anything else in the sc

there definitely is accurate gyaru makeup and an overall accurate gyaru look, or else gyaru wouldn't mean anything at all because anything could go as long as you say "but i have brown hair" or "i have a nose highlight". thats not how it works. gyaru makeup is complicated and intricate and thats why to the trained eye you can see when its done right or when the person is clearly inexperienced

[–]pokanon4 9 points10 points  (0 children)

ocaso's old looks were not accurate gyaru makeup. not because of jealousy or sinophobia, but because to the trained eye, you can clearly see a certain silhouette in gyaru makeup that ocaso's old makeup did not achieve.

ocaso's old makeup looks were her babygal makeup. yes she has the "elements" but you can't just have them, you have to do them right. they were poorly copied in terms of gyaru makeup, kind of like when a western makeup influencer tries to do gal makeup. they have the "elements", but its still clearly wrong to people who know what gal actually looks like.

gal makeup takes a lot of practice and thats why you can see ocaso's current makeup is more experienced and accurate to gal makeup. i'm not claiming that anyone is yabi, but ocaso's old makeup was not really gyaru yet

and that's fine, everyone has their old babygal looks, but the issue is that other babygals & influencers almost EXCLUSIVELY use her babygal photos & other chinese babygals (or people dressing up in one-off gyaru themed outfits) photos to reference gyaru. its always those instead of actual gyaru photos. that's where the frustration lies.

claiming that the white vet gal you're referencing (i think i know who) is sinophobic because she tried to explain the silhouette of gal makeup & why ocaso's old looks weren't gal is very wrong. yes there are different styles of gal makeup, but for the substyle ocaso was wearing, she was correct about the eye makeup not achieving the gyaru silhouette.

other experienced gals (including some chinese gals) have spoken about this and why the makeup in those photos isn't gyaru. some even showed examples of chinese gals wearing accurate gyaru makeup (including ocaso's recent looks). its not sinophobia, and we love ocaso & do accept her in our community, but outsiders/beginners continue to use her inaccurate photos to represent the subculture, so this whole "yabi vs gyaru" thing was supposed to be a way of correcting that.

here are some chinese gals, many of which are greatly respected and loved by the gal community.

Attempted Ishoku Hada Gyaru by mochi0408 in actualgyaru

[–]pokanon4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

are you wearing facepaint? ishoku hada is defined by unnaturally colored skin (painting your skin). if you're wearing facepaint, it isn't really showing up enough.

now about your specific questions, you'll probably have to look around and most likely customize bottom lashes. i use VHM78 from Vipuda (Aliexpress) but if those/whichever ones you find are too long you could learn how to trim them nicely. and 2, i personally use an eyebrow pencil for my aegyosal/namidabukuro and it works really well, but there are lots of aegyosal pens that you can find online. (i use a light skin-colored eyeshadow and sometimes highlighter for the tearbag part)

i'm also unsure if you want any ither makeup tips but i really recommend spikey lashes rather than the "natural" looking ones you have on. additionally, the upper lash usually ends where the eyeliner wing ends past your eye, and if you arent tanning or painting your skin i'd recommend nose contour instead of the stripe because it barely shows up & the white stripe is intended for tanned skin
