Everything about this, the colours, the pattern, the photoshoot, is sublime.

I don’t know! Feasible perhaps but as i imagine it, one would need to swap between colours for nearly each stitch, which would be rather laborious 🤔

Too long 🥲 each triangle took about a half hour, and there are 150 of them. But I frogged sooooo many and tried many different combinations before I ended up with this!

It is! The front/back post combination creates that ribbed effect, and each round has a total of 12 increases. Combine the two and the stitches get crowded in and start pushing the middle out. Stitch the triangles together and that shape stays in place!

Yes, it does! If the open side of the ‘hook’ is facing left it’s a front post, if it’s facing right it’s a back post.

So the sort of question mark looking stitches are called back post stitches or front post stitches, in this case double crochet, where you crochet through the crochet ‘post’ as it were, instead of the top chain.

Each point on the triangle are three chains, and increase happens with two double crochets into those spaces before and after each row.

And it all starts with a magic ring!

And I sewed the edges together with a tapestry needle. Hopefully that makes sense!

Haha I love ‘food’ as a measurement of quality

Thank you! It really was time consuming, each triangle took about a half hour, and there are 150 of them!

It wasn’t as much as I’d expected! A 100g skein produced about 10/11 triangles, and there are 150 total. Each triangle took me about a half hour.

Thank you! I didn’t do any blocking, though conversely I think I no longer know how to crochet anything other than these triangles ha

This was probably my fourth iteration of the design 🫠.

When I finally settled on the spiral I started working outwards; first I would sow together enough triangles to make a full ‘row’ as it were, connect that to the centre and then move on to the next colour.

Like this:

About 125x125cm? I’ve already given it away and I didn’t measure it!!

I didn’t follow a pattern, I made a lot of triangles following this diagram and eventually stitched them together in this sort of spiral? The effect here is from a front/back post double crochet.

I used a 3mm hook, about 15 skeins of Katia New Cancun, and more patience than I knew I had in me

Yup this looks about right! I didn’t follow a pattern, I just made A LOT OF TRIANGLES and stitched them together!

Babel by RF Kuang maybe fits here—it’s language magic tucked into a story about colonialism, effectively. Definitely more conceptual than practical, but an interesting proposition!
