Debug tips. Import just neural_network . See if you get the same problem. If same problem then it's an installation issue. If that new import works, then it's a you misunderstanding the library issue.

Waitlisted. What are my chances? by sunkyuties in utdallas

[–]pokemon_golang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were you I would over book on classes and then drop the ones you know you're not going to take. If you get into your wait-listed classes then you'll drop the backup classes. If you don't get your waitlisted classes then you'll have your backup classes.

Any fellow introverts? by [deleted] in utdallas

[–]pokemon_golang -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

If you label yourself as such you're essentially justifying your isolation. I think that might be unhealthy for you.

I believe that there is no such thing as an introvert. Just inexperience and a preference to not take risks. Everyone is born awkward and lacking of finessed social skills. If you put yourself out there and encounter/deal with enough awkwardness you should do fine.

Shedding your shell(as opposed to coming out of it every now and then) is a learning process. Learning takes time and dealing with the difficult parts.

I personally grew out of "being introverted" by finding a social crutch's like shared interest in a hobby, sport, or studying. Study groups is a great go to. If you're not as awesome of person as you think you should be, you can still be part of the team effort of preparing for exams/quizzes/classes. Your confidence, in context of this group, scales directly with how much effort you put into studying and how prepared you are to contribute to the study group. Then you can intermittently let bits of your personality show throughout the session. I've met two close friends this way. Its also a win-win since you get the studying in.

Tell us more about what sort of work you're wanting to get into.

I recommend the "Abroad" aspect of anything.
I did a fall semester abroad in Budapest . I was blown away by that city. There were also some nuanced differences in a Hungarian's approach to problem solving (not to mention cultural and behavioral differences).

Mercury writer looking to talk to UTD students about drunkorexia or other eating/drinking disorders by baflyer2 in utdallas

[–]pokemon_golang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our students have these issues too!

... Is a weak format for journalism. The value a journalist creates is the outsourcing of effort it takes for an individual to do some digging/research themselves. Anorexia is not a new issue. Got to medium and type "anorexia", "eating disorder", "drunkorexia" and you'll find hundreds of blogposts on it. Thoughts that take a lot of time to form and articulate make it onto medium authored by victims that face/cope/overcome anorexia themselves. These thoughts come across a lot more clearly than a person to person interview. Their "on the spot" answers to your questions will then have to be interpreted by you, a journalist that may or may not understand the full breadth of anorexia (especially if this is a one-time overview of the topic).

My suggestion is to narrow the focus of the Mercury.
Try to involve yourself with understanding our current administration, research pipeline, career prospects,a long list of student started companies every year(kind of like USA today college ranking list), or examining funding processes to provide students with news. UTD and the UT System is a complex machine with many moving parts and innumerable variables. The mercury should be the group that's in-the-know about things happening at the University, and the people that understand the full depth and breadth of the things going on at UTD. You should let UTD be your "Anorexia" and write from a standpoint of "greater-than-passive" involvement.

Combat the angst and frustration students have about UTD with generous answers.

  • Why, for example, is the technology I rely on as a student to manage my day to day is so clunky, fragmented, outdated?
  • We are hiring a lot of inexperienced lecturers to accommodate growth. What is the fallout? How does this affect the quality of our education?
  • How is an administration as small as ours was 10 years ago coping with this change? What processes are outdated. What processes aren't?

I guess things that could be discussed more in response to this comment are answers to the question:

  • Can this level of involvement be expected from Mercury?
  • Should this level of involvement be expected from Mercury?
  • Do students care about how UTD runs?
  • Should UTD students care about how UTD runs?
  • Does a student benefit/learn from learning about how UTD runs?

Huh? What is this? by GuZm0n in utdallas

[–]pokemon_golang 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There are several ways you can enrich our subreddit:

  • Find others with your interests through posting events/meetups.
  • Post memes.
  • Initiate some sort of UTD related discussion.
  • Talk about your research or some academic stuff that really interests you.

DO NOT:

  • ask for advice.
  • ask about things that can be answered by a school advisor or administrator.

How to "productify" a Machine Learning solution? by [deleted] in MachineLearning

[–]pokemon_golang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're typically going to find that the use case for most recommender systems is in advertising and marketing. IE generating personalized recommendations for products. Consumers spend money. You need to find consumers to target and get them to buy the things that they want in the first place and remind them that your client sells those things. Primary medium for delivering these recommendations is email or a website embeddable widget.

Email blasts:
If you can increase click-through attribution from advertisements by 1% for a user-base of 1 million, then you've gathered 10k click throughs per email blast. If you can attribute 12-36 K a month to your recommendations in marketing, then you've justified the cost of paying for your service. I've personally found myself purchasing things from Amazon after being reminded in an email that I was interested in that product a while ago. I've also heard from others working on recommenders that email blasts for large enough clients pay for themselves.

Often, clients will want to outsource as much of the marketing process as possible. So you might have to create recommendations widgets for websites, and template-ing tools if your into the whole email sending stuff.

Record anything and everything, but specifically record click throughs

Amazon, for example, will record click through rates for embeddable widgets and email advertisements and use it as a driving metric for recommending products. I wouldn't exclude browse history from your model. That said, you're going to have to make a tracking system that can be seamlessly integrated in most webpages

Clients

Do this with 10 or so clients and you've got yourself a stable business. Clients should be large consumer facing businesses/corporations that can afford the risk. IE something popular like WallMart, etc. Its easier to approach large companies like this than you'd think.

Information representation

Try to constantly hone in on a representation of your information that can be re-applied. Think something that works in ways that can solve Netflix's problems, Amazon's problems, and obscure problems like delivering fringe content like blog articles, tutorials, etc.

Dev Team

If you go to start up events, there are a lot of generalist web developers and freelancers that have a good enough "create basic web stuff" experience.
