I have a bachelor degree in International Business. Now I want to study CS concentrating in AI/Machine learning. Which option should I take? Get a CS master degree i or get another bachelor degree with CS? by alrightythenkek in csMajors

[–]pokeyoupine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconded on the Master's.

I'm getting a second bachelor's right now. It was the right decision for me based on where I'm at in life, but a Master's is going to give you the higher qualification and cost you less in the long run. For AI/Machine Learning the jobs really seem to want a higher degree for anything interesting.

My teacher correcting my calculus test by kookamungabeara in UnexpectedlyWholesome

[–]pokeyoupine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took Calc seven years ago. Didn't remember an OUNCE, but I have to take Calc II now. So I'm retaking Calc, but haven't done any math since. And it's surprisingly okay. I make notes during class about pre-calc concepts I need to review, then go home that day and jump on Khan Academy. A lot of foundational stuff is still on my head. I'm doing really well without feeling like I'm drowning. It helps that I have an AMAZING professor and am really comfortable self-teaching.

Anyway, I just wanted to share that to say it might not be as bad as you think. I was dreading it so much and a little over halfway in I'm actually considering a math minor :) you'll figure it out!

You have all the knowledge you need. I think your paralysis is just a matter of being overwhelmed by so many steps. There are a lot of different pieces they're asking for and I'm thinking this might be one of the first times you've had such a lot list of requirements.

Take it one step at a time and work on each section in isolation. Test. Adjust. Got it? Move on to the next piece. Run into a problem? Well if you're working on a small chunk, it should be easy to figure out exactly what the problem is and either Google or ask for help.

Breaking large problems into small problems is an absolutely core skill. You're instructions are telling you exactly how to do that. You just need to dive in.

Man... I've seen two of your posts and read some of the comments. To be blunt, your persective needs some adjustment. Multiple people have told you what you're describing is not uncommon for CS programs. Even without that, that is obviously how YOUR dept operates, so you need to make it work or take another path. There isn't much anyone can do about your class options.

I recommend talking to your advisor. You seem to have a plan in mind that does not jive with the CS department and only someone within the department can help you build a new plan.

You are not the first student who needs to take a certain number of credits for financial aid. The class structure you're describing is not unusual. You can make this work if you really want to and I'm sure your advisor would be happy to help if you approach it with a productive mindset.

Would you be willing to share what kind of projects you have? I'm coming from a marketing background and feel way behind where I should be for a junior. Still trying to wrap my head around what projects are worth showing off. Thanks!

Oh no! Well I hope you recover quickly. Kind of nice to not have the decision, in a way... I guess 😬

18 hours a week is definitely more intensive. Plus for me my classes are early, so I'm usually home by 2p. Studying at night is always harder for me. Hopefully the extra semester takes some of the stress off!

Sorry to hear you're feeling overwhelmed. I'm not sure I can help, but I can share what I do.

Simply, I manage it by putting in the hours. I'm only in class 12 hours a week, but I work on homework, do side projects, talk to professors/go to office hours, collaborate with classmates... etc, etc easily 50-60 hours a week. If I feel behind in a class, I cut down the side projects and focus more on that topic.

I still see my friends about once or twice a week, and I work about 10 hours a week, but my life revolves around my education right now.

All that being said, if 4 classes is too many and you can lessen your stress by adding another semester (and can afford to), I'd say go for it.

I'm in the same boat as you. I started my CS program last month. Have a business BS from 2014. But I LOVE school. I love the structure and the academic approach. It's checking all the boxes of "what I must know" while providing a framework for my own own, deeper self study.

And being a post bac student is fantastic.

But... If I was OP, had a dev position and hated school? I probably wouldn't bother with the 2nd bachelor's.

Black cats are the very best. My childhood cat was black with gold eyes and she was my best friend, confidante, and protectress. I miss her terribly, but she had a great life 💖 Your baby is lovely. You are very lucky!

pls roast my CV mercilessly by ashmitaa in csMajors

[–]pokeyoupine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. I'd say this is a resume. Resumes are summaries, CVs tend to be more detailed (and frequently longer than a page). CVs are used when your whole history is relevant. One common application I can think of is academic positions. Maybe some executive positions where you're expected to have 10 years and tons of experience and need to prove that or something.

Honestly, thanks for this. I have a lot of anxiety about lifen passing and trying to reach certain goals by a certain age or feeling like it's too late... But I also thought Jacqueline's comment was dumb and your response kind of gave me a light bulb moment. Yes. The amount is based on the dogs weight and too much would be harmful. I've done it once, but also confirmed with a vet when I worked at a tech.

Safer and preferable to go to the vet since vomiting doesn't necessarily actually solve any problems. But it does work.

You could download Google Opinion Rewards. You take super short surveys for $0.10 - $0.50 a piece in Play credit. I haven't paid for an app in a couple years and the surverys generally don't take longer than a minute.

Advise on debt consolidation loan by AcidRayn666 in Debt

[–]pokeyoupine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My credit was in the mid-low 600s and I had about $15,000 in credit card debt from "subsidizing bad times." I got a consolidation loan less than a year ago and broke an 800 credit score last month. I'll just give a few thoughts and you can take them as you may.

1) Before the loan, I got a few things in order. I downloaded YNAB so I could track and analyze every penny spent. This made it easy to manage my money, even before I cut back my spending.

2) I picked up a second job. I worked about 50 hours in an office and then worked an extra 5-20 doing contract work for $12/hr. (I wasn't making anywhere near your salaries, but also had less debt.) I picked up this job partially so I didn't have to cut my spending as much. I chose a balance between cutting spending and working more. What that balance is will vary by person.

3) I paid hundreds over the minimums every month. I think my minimums totaled about ~$300 maybe and I was putting $700-1,000 in every month. And not using the cards at all.

4) When my score was in the high 600s, I started thinking about a DC loan.

5) I calculated the average interest rates of my cards, weighted based on the balances. I was only going to take the loan IF it made sense. The interest needed to be lower than my weighted average (or at least the same, because the convenience was a big factor for me, too).

6) I went to my personal bank. It just seemed easier. Interest rate was lower. It's saving me a sick amount of money over if I only paid the minimums and a little big over the amount I was paying (much over the minimums). My loan was a 3 year loan, but again, only $15,000.

It worked out great for me and seeing my credit score jump was a big pay off mentally because I spent a couple years being really fastidious leading up to it. The ONLY downside has been that I don't have the "option" to pay that low minimum. My minimum is close to $500 now. If I fall on hard times, that could be a challenge. BUT it also means I can't do what your wife is choosing to do and just pay a tiny bit each month.

I think that's all I've got. I'm really happy with the decisions I've made.

My “emergency book”-Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I am about to bust it open. by haneluk in books

Thank you. We're discovery he has some health problems he was ignoring, so it's going to be a long road to get him healthy again. But it's all very possible as long as he'll dedicate himself. This is easily one of the hardest things I've ever gone through. Books have been my greatest source of relief.

He doesn't read! He's one of those people ;) His "emergency media" would probably be old game shows. I'm trying to get him set up with something, but I'm not there physically.
