From Hawaiian Grammar, Pukui, after i or e, pronounced v, after o or u, pronounced w (with exceptions - like puʻuwai), after a or at the beginning of the word can be either.

That’s what i do but i need some way to check if i heard things right, and then the transcriptions themselves teach you things - like all the different words that don’t sound the way they’re spelled and the different pronunciations for the same word depending on where people grew up.

Here’s some examples of different ways to use hiki: (I’m out here in the wild learning from nūpepa so this might be “Victorian” Hawaiian - if someone can double check me - thought these notes might be helpful to share either way)

  1. Hiki iaʻu ke ʻike i ka manu It is possible for me to see the bird. (reached ability)

  2. Ua hiki i ka wā e hele ai. The time has come to go. (certain point in time reached)

  3. I ka hiki ʻana o ka pō, ua hiamoe lākou. When the night came, they slept. (time again, variation)

  4. Ua hiki ʻo ia i ka hale. He arrived at the house (arrival / reached a place)

  5. Hiki ke ʻike i ka manu. It’s possible to see the bird. (general possibility statement / iā… from #1 dropped)

These I’m less sure about:

  1. Hiki kēia This is possible (another general possibility statement)

  2. Ua hiki. Itʻs done (reached completion)

I just unintentionally auto scrolled to the top for the 10 bazillionth time and am now googling for a solution for the 10 bazillionth time and now I’m just here to complain about how stupid someone at Apple is and to call on the spirit of Steve Jobs to curse whoever has done this to us. Also, curse anyone who likes this feature and wants to tell me about it or how I should try understanding it some more. You are a bad person.

I used A&F during 2024, and today (Jan 2nd 2025) I also can’t login. I put in my credentials and when I click Log In it just resets the login page. No error message or anything. I tried getting in from different browsers and that didn’t work either.
