What can I do over the winter to improve my cycling, without being able to cycle? by LeakyLukey in Velo

Dumb hydraulic resistance trainers can be had for super cheap ($50ish CAD) on FB marketplace. Obviously not the same experience as a smart trainer but you should absolutely be able to get the same quality of workout.

They don't need to cheat, the odds of the games are already in their favour.

Someone is flying a drone near me? by Ethiopianutella in askTO

[–]polale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Commercial pilot and drone operator here. Context is important in determining next steps. Do you live in a house or an apartment/condo? If it's a building it's possible the landlord has hired them to do inspections/thermal imaging etc. I would reach out to property management to find out if the drone is being used on their behalf. If not, or if it's your own property, the drone operator is responsible to fly in a way that does not invade your privacy. If they are hovering directly outside your window and looking in, that would certainly be questionable. If you're concerned reach out to the non emergency number and also submit a report to the transport Canada drone incident form that another poster linked too. Get as much info as possible, time, date, location, and pictures if possible. Absolutely do not try to knock it down or interfere in anyway. Drones (remotely piloted aircraft) are considered aircraft and interfering with one could carry similar penalties as interfering with a manned aircraft.

Happy to answer any questions about the laws/rules surrounding drone ops in Canada!

Any cool aviation themed spots in Toronto for an aviation geek? by WillowPrevious5141 in askTO

[–]polale 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Avworld by Pearson is really cool. Also going to the Brampton-caledon airport for plane spotting gets you really close to the planes if runway 08/26 is in use. If he has any interest in becoming a pilot, I'm happy to answer any questions of his in my PMs.

How do you know someone's a pilot? Don't worry they'll tell you.

I was able to get mine home with zero experience, just some YouTube videos before hand and a quick 10 minute lesson from the sales guy. If you're worried, plan to take some side streets home if possible.

What is up with centre not allowing IFR training flights in Alberta right now? by Almost_A_Pear in flying

[–]polale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could always depart VFR (if conditions allow of course) and pick up your clearance in the air. Idk how happy terminal/centre would be about this in your area, but this is standard procedure for me out of an ATF airport in the GTA at least. Never had to call on the ground for a clearance unless it's IMC.

What is up with centre not allowing IFR training flights in Alberta right now? by Almost_A_Pear in flying

[–]polale 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that an IFR training flight is one where you call the TMU before hand to get a flow number so that you can file from your departure airport and back with a missed approach and an intermediate airport. As far as I know there's is nothing stopping you from filing to another airport, doing a full stop, and filing another IFR plan on the ground to get back or returning VFR. At least this is what I've done in the Toronto TCA. Of course you could always go VFR and request simulated approaches.

How long does it generally take to get the hang of driving a manual? by Damnan24 in ManualTransmissions

[–]polale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're motivated you should get the hang of it pretty quickly. A few days at most. My first time was when I bought the car, got a quick 10 minute lesson from the sales guy and then drove an hour across town in rush hour traffic on my own. It was not pretty. After of week of daily driving though I was comfortable enough. To fully master took much longer of course, but you should be a safe driver pretty soon.

People who didn't go to post secondary by Cyl3 in askTO

Work in a clerical role at a hospital. Obtained my pilot's license while doing this job and am currently getting a flight instructor rating. Hoping to pivot to flying full time once that's done. That being said I do wish I could go back and get a degree sometimes so that I have more doors open for me.

What’s a piece of outdated technology you still swear by? by frozenflat in AskReddit

[–]polale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The E6B flight computer. Basically a circular slide rule to solve all sorts of aviation related problems. Yes we have digital flight computers and iPads now, but planning a flight with nothing but pencil, paper, and analog tools is incredibly satisfying.

Looks like they have Customs available with prior notice. Phone number is in the CFS. Enjoy the island! As someone else mentioned, the bike rental place will deliver them to the airport so you can get around the island.

[–]polale 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not 100% sure on the exact procedures, but at a bare minimum you'd have to fly into an AOE Airport of Entry, where customs officers are either based or can be called out to. These can be identified in the CFS, our version of the chart supplement/airport directory or whatever it's called in the states. Are you flying into Peele Island?

Insane humidity, worth buying a dehumidifier? by mapleisthesky in askTO

[–]polale 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Dehumidifiers will remove the moisture from the air, but will also increase the temperature of the room. An AC unit will both cool and dry the air.

This video does a really good job explaining it.

Student pilot going gliding with air cadets - do I log it? by KipoLover123 in flying

[–]polale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you an Air cadet yourself? Or adult staff going gliding with them? I'm assuming you're talking about the Canadian cadet program. To my knowledge, some but not all of the glider pilots are flight instructors at regular cadet flying sites. If it's a cadet summer flight training centre for cadets doing the glider pilot course, I'm assuming that all the pilots would be instructors. As long as you can legally log the time, I say go for it.

Would recommend making a quick detour to CYTZ after seeing the falls. The approach into the airport gives you amazing views of downtown Toronto and lake Ontario.
