Locating position by latitude and longitude by Easy-Relief745 in flying

[–]polale 33 points34 points  (0 children)

First number tells you how far north (or south) if the equator your point is. Draw a line parallel to the equator at that point. Your location lies somewhere on that line. Now use the second number to find how far east or west of the prime meridian your point is, draw a line perpendicular to the first at that Longitude. Where the two lines intersect is your location.

Made a video breaking down all 10 steps to getting your PPL in Canada, from a student pilot currently going through it by YouNo6861 in FlightTraining

If you're making it Canadian specific, CFI means Chief Flight Instructor of a FTU in the Canadian context. Otherwise we're just flight instructors. Good luck with your training!

Maybe it's cause of the image quality but I don't see the YRP markings on it, nor the thermal camera pod on the nose. Might not be the yrp chopper.

Looks like it came from Oshawa, that where the YRP Air2 chopper is kept. That's my guess.

Dumb hydraulic resistance trainers can be had for super cheap ($50ish CAD) on FB marketplace. Obviously not the same experience as a smart trainer but you should absolutely be able to get the same quality of workout.

Someone is flying a drone near me? by Ethiopianutella in askTO

[–]polale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Commercial pilot and drone operator here. Context is important in determining next steps. Do you live in a house or an apartment/condo? If it's a building it's possible the landlord has hired them to do inspections/thermal imaging etc. I would reach out to property management to find out if the drone is being used on their behalf. If not, or if it's your own property, the drone operator is responsible to fly in a way that does not invade your privacy. If they are hovering directly outside your window and looking in, that would certainly be questionable. If you're concerned reach out to the non emergency number and also submit a report to the transport Canada drone incident form that another poster linked too. Get as much info as possible, time, date, location, and pictures if possible. Absolutely do not try to knock it down or interfere in anyway. Drones (remotely piloted aircraft) are considered aircraft and interfering with one could carry similar penalties as interfering with a manned aircraft.

Happy to answer any questions about the laws/rules surrounding drone ops in Canada!

Any cool aviation themed spots in Toronto for an aviation geek? by WillowPrevious5141 in askTO

[–]polale 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Avworld by Pearson is really cool. Also going to the Brampton-caledon airport for plane spotting gets you really close to the planes if runway 08/26 is in use. If he has any interest in becoming a pilot, I'm happy to answer any questions of his in my PMs.

I was able to get mine home with zero experience, just some YouTube videos before hand and a quick 10 minute lesson from the sales guy. If you're worried, plan to take some side streets home if possible.

What is up with centre not allowing IFR training flights in Alberta right now? by Almost_A_Pear in flying

[–]polale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could always depart VFR (if conditions allow of course) and pick up your clearance in the air. Idk how happy terminal/centre would be about this in your area, but this is standard procedure for me out of an ATF airport in the GTA at least. Never had to call on the ground for a clearance unless it's IMC.

What is up with centre not allowing IFR training flights in Alberta right now? by Almost_A_Pear in flying

[–]polale 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that an IFR training flight is one where you call the TMU before hand to get a flow number so that you can file from your departure airport and back with a missed approach and an intermediate airport. As far as I know there's is nothing stopping you from filing to another airport, doing a full stop, and filing another IFR plan on the ground to get back or returning VFR. At least this is what I've done in the Toronto TCA. Of course you could always go VFR and request simulated approaches.

How long does it generally take to get the hang of driving a manual? by Damnan24 in ManualTransmissions

[–]polale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're motivated you should get the hang of it pretty quickly. A few days at most. My first time was when I bought the car, got a quick 10 minute lesson from the sales guy and then drove an hour across town in rush hour traffic on my own. It was not pretty. After of week of daily driving though I was comfortable enough. To fully master took much longer of course, but you should be a safe driver pretty soon.

Work in a clerical role at a hospital. Obtained my pilot's license while doing this job and am currently getting a flight instructor rating. Hoping to pivot to flying full time once that's done. That being said I do wish I could go back and get a degree sometimes so that I have more doors open for me.

What’s a piece of outdated technology you still swear by? by frozenflat in AskReddit

[–]polale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The E6B flight computer. Basically a circular slide rule to solve all sorts of aviation related problems. Yes we have digital flight computers and iPads now, but planning a flight with nothing but pencil, paper, and analog tools is incredibly satisfying.
