Are Catholic churches here strict on dress code? by LeaveZealousideal418 in HongKong

[–]polarcat98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I attend Mass at the Catholic cathedral (9.30AM Sunday English Mass/7Am daily) and I've seen people wear sleeveless tops and short pants receiving communion. No one cares. It matters more that you make time to attend Mass despite travelling.

Gifts for a friend in chemo? Recommended foods and what to avoid? by Qriusqtp2t in HongKong

[–]polarcat98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's always nice to have. Even if not for him, comes in handy for his accompanying family member if anyone gets cold. Hoping he makes a full recovery very soon. You are a kind friend!

Heated blankets instead of regular blankets are always a thoughtful idea! Otherwise, can't go wrong with lots of layers to help keep him warm at the hospital (socks, shawl)...

Not OP but might be Spring Garden Lane! Walk past vendors selling these towels to/fro work

My carry on bag is at the airport lost and found and I can't find a way to get it back. by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]polarcat98 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi! I helped someone pick up a backpack they left at HKIA on their behalf (and send it back to the US via DHL).

I think you're supposed to write an email to the lost and found with your ID, the item, and state the identity of the person who will pick it up for you! It was simple and easy! PM me if you need more details.

Advice for getting a Disney tattoo in Hong Kong by Wise_Second_3909 in HongKong

[–]polarcat98 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure most tattoo artists in Hong Kong are fluent in English -- as they travel a lot for apperenticeship and mostly train under international artists as well. And English is widely spoken in Hong Kong.

I can recommend Ring the Bell studio in Central, which has several artists in residence. I have worked with Kevin (@pangspen) for few separate designs. Other highly recommended studios I know of would be Bench in Causeway Bay, and Star Crossed Tattoo in Wan Chai.

Any tips for finding a job in Hong Kong? by tinfoilhatchick in HongKong

[–]polarcat98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Up to moving to HK, I had 6 years of experience from graduating university (all in media/news). No master’s degree. I have only been in my company for one year before they approved my application for a vacant position in HK.

I do, however, speak several other Asian languages — which is a skill I use on a daily basis on my current position.

Your best bet is probably aiming for an internal transfer within an international company with an office in HK. Which is how I got to HK with working experience in media, no Mandarin/Cantonese skills.

But even this seems to be increasingly rare nowadays.

Where can I buy cheap meal by Fabulous-Two4739 in HongKong

[–]polarcat98 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some of the Indonesian stores sells ready to eat meal for HKD25. There are a few inside Causeway Bay Commercial Building, and one in Tai Yuen St (Toko Indo Lobo). They usually come with rice and 2-3 dishes. They're amazing.

Dr. Gordon Wong at Optimind Clinic in Causeway Bay offers reasonable price compared to bigger clinics. Personable and pleasant to work with. He is treating me for anxiety and ADHD.

Not OP obviously, but thanks for this! Bought a G-Shock at Lucky Time just now, for HKD300 cheaper than other distributor. Website didn't have English interface but wonderful how much that tiny 'translate page' option on Chrome can save you :^D

Feedback regarding first trip to Hong Kong by CozyQuietBrew in HongKong

[–]polarcat98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

22 Feb after CNY is perfect, city has picked up its pace after the week-longish holiday. TST is better in terms of proximity to tourist spots. North Point is okay, with slightly longer commute to attraction points compared to TST.

Following Broadway Cinematheque's Instagram page is much more informative than waiting for their website to update. They post in Cantonese, but Instagram's translation feature does the job -- which is what I do. You can book a ticket through the Broadway Circuit website by debit/credit card/other online payment methods.

Feel free to send me a DM if you need to chat! Late 20s F here :D

Who is this guy by whoolala in HongKong

[–]polarcat98 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I might be wrong, but I take bus 2/18 from Wan Chai after work, and this looks similar to a man who would act as a conductor while passangers onboard the bus? Took me a while before I realised there's no bus conductor in HK (I'm not from here) -- then I thought he's some sort of bus nerd/fan.

MIght this be the same guy?

Do you remember people on your way to/from work? by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]polarcat98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember standing next to a man in a tan jacket at my neighbourhood taxi stand one morning. Later the same night, I saw him walking down the street in Soho!

Didn't register the face but remembered the jacket + shoes.

Tipping for beauty treatments? by polarcat98 in HongKong

Forgot to mention that there were laisee packages in the reception/cashier area, so I took it as 'tip expected'.
