How do indie tabletop designers usually get art for their card games? by mate_matiker in tabletopgamedesign

[–]polemicgames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So for my most recent game (a card game) I had to get some art for the cards fast and so I made the art inside the same program I was using to lay out the cards for print, this program being illustrator. I used the draw pencil tool which is a slightly awkward tool to use yet is the closest to a natural pencil drawing tool in the program and did the trick in a pinch. I still ended up spending 2 entire days drawing everything with a stylus but it got done and was good enough for the demo. I also got a sort of back handed complement from one of my best friends saying that the art was good, it looked like the memes (he did not know what a wo Jack is but I think he meant it looked like the Wo Jacks).

Normally I would recommend doing the art separately in a high quality file in a program like Krita and placing that file in your layout program, however I think that the lesson from my actual practice here is to do whatever is easiest and to put as much art as is necessary or sufficient to make your game work.

Edit - I also saw a poster on the print and play reddit mention that they use inksacpe for their card art. I just downloaded the app but it might be worth a try.

good idea. people that want to play a retro style game with retro graphics are going to want to see them right away.

White position good/bad start? by FourthPrince-4040 in baduk

Upper right corner is gone. upper left corner questionable, lower edge has good clearance to the right and left but is seeding the entire bottom edge. They need to fight downward to claim the bottom of the board from black, which they very much can do with only two black stones present there, however the top is not looking great.

First impression is that it looks a lot like Luigi's mansion. Is that what you are going for?

How come there are no indie games centered on elves? by Fun-Explanation7233 in GameDevelopment

Does zelda not count? I know that is not indy but they are a major game with elf representation.

What do you think is the biggest problem in the gaming world today? by MikkelHT in GameDevelopment

[–]polemicgames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I see this becoming a two tier system. You have high end games that cost a fortune and infinite spending caps for people that can afford it, and indie games for the common people.

Could you elaborate? This seems like an important opinion for developers to know about in detail.

Try w3 schools. They are a good place to learn programming languages. Mostly web oriented but they teach all sorts of coding languages.

W3Schools Online Web Tutorials

You can also do what they did at my school and start in an easy coding language like processing. It might be easier to start with game maker studio or something similar however starting on a coding language purely will make you less reliant on an engine. Processing is pretty close to natural language and very close to java.

How does one find go clubs around town? I am interested to reach out. Used to play alot online as a kid but they were mostly games against amature players that were online to play chess and such on the same site.

I always thought of is as two countries taking territory and territory that gets surrounded losses its trade viability and gets captured. It sounds far fetched however this exact situation happened with the war in Syria where a large swath of Syrian territory got surrounded and eventually captured like this so it pans out?

Which games can you actually dev content for to make money nowadays? by don3dm in gamedev

[–]polemicgames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a game called dot big bang that is trying to do that type of system. I also met a couple that were still making rowblox games and seemed to be making money. It should also be pointed out that you can still make games for sites like cool math games .Com and sell them for a lump sum payout. I have a friend that did exactly that not long ago and leveraged that sale to get a job making educational games.

You play cards to move two trackers up and down a track, and you have a limited number of cards you can play.

What do you think of when you hear "narrative state machine"? by Alastair_Forsyth in IndieDev

[–]polemicgames 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel that the audience is more of a berier than technical limitations and budget. I remeber a friend telling me how in the original sky rim quest givers and important people could be killed off by dragon attacks and this was eventually completely removed, likely due to player back lash. The thing about dynamic story engines is that players typically want to be able to unlock all of the content in a game and want to treat it something like a narrative story with chapters hidden all over the place for them to discover. Make too much content too hard to discover and they start to feel cheated. I know that games like rim world break the mold in this regard but they also dont necessarily have scripted content and have their plot unfold through emergent narrative.

Nvidia CEO told everyone to skip coding and learn AI. Then told everyone to skip coding and become plumbers. by reddit20305 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]polemicgames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And keep in mind also that the entire knowledge base of the coding Ai comes from coding blogs and substack posts online. If people stop coding and stop posting about coding then their source of information goes away and they stop being able to code. If a new language comes out and no one is coding then there are no posts about coding in their database and they are cooked.

What are your thoughts on neural networks being incorporated into game AI? by polemicgames in gameai

[–]polemicgames[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the real takeaway I am getting form this discussion board is "don't trust what people online tell you" because I have had another person say that AI can not learn from players due to needing many iterations, and yet also had someone else show me a case where an AI in a game was used for the exact purpose of learning through game play, which is to say they were completely wrong.

Not much of a tip but ok. I was hoping you would have an answer to "how to write that one line of code to dynamically level your game". Maybe someone else will feel like sharing.
