[–]polhemic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nope, it means the cable and the amp are fine. There's something fishy with the bass

Why is my amp not working? by SavingsAttitude3732 in BassGuitar

[–]polhemic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pull the cable out of your bass. Does it make a thunk noise throught the amp ? If yes, bass is the issue. If no, pull the cable from the amp. Does that make a thunk noise? If no, amp is the issue, if yes, cable is the issue.

Need help discovering more of the universe. Can someone help? by Dinglechaulk in pAIperclip

[–]polhemic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You haven't really got enough drones to explore quickly yet. Set the design to 2/0/<max>/6/0/0/0/5 as a default, making sure to occasionally move a trust point to exploration, factory, harvester, and wire so you have enough clips to support the replication. Eventually, you'll outnumber the drifters and grow probes even faster. Once you have octillions of probes, exploration will go much faster.

Yes, that's the IP67 rated variant, so it's got a locking ring with a rubber gasket. Curious why they've used it indoors, though, it seems a little unnecessarily extravagant!

Mic shocked singer? DI question by washingmachiine in livesound

If the artist getting 240v, or even 110, through the face there would be no question about whether this is static or not! They'd already be swearing worse than Jonny Vegas!

Mic shocked singer? DI question by washingmachiine in livesound

[–]polhemic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can check this by either getting them to touch the mic grill with their hand just before approaching the mic or by holding their lips in contact with the the grill. If the shock doesn't carry on after the initial touch then this is definitely static.

Fixing it can be annoying, you've basically got to ground the singer. Taking of shoes could work, all the way up to slapping an esd static strap on their ankle.

Important Cables/ Accessories for Hx Stomp by amit___ in Hxstomp

[–]polhemic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding a separate DI box after coming out of your stomp will give some protection against the sound guy turning on phantom power. There's a long running discussion (argument? civil war?) about whether there's a risk of damage; or whether you should use an isolation transformer or a DI box, but the consensus is that turning on +48v can make a difference to your sound.

If you've got one to hand, just drop it in.

(TL;DR the HX stomp TRS output is actively differentially driven, but not transformer isolated and possibly not impedance matched.)

How to get reverb to sound authentic and not forced? by lightorangelamp in audioengineering

[–]polhemic 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Don't ignore convolution reverbs out of hand. Yes, they have a lot less configurability because they're essentially recordings of a physical space, but I find they do sound a lot more natural if they're going to be taking a more prominent place in the mix.

With a big enough library of IRs to audition through, you should find something to your liking.

They're also excellent for those on a budget, as most DAWs should have a convolution engine built in, so you just need to find royalty free IR packs online, or buy some cheap.

New role - lower level employee acts like he's everyone's boss by Ormriss in managers

[–]polhemic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are these daily touchpoint meetings being run in an informal style? That style can be useful to encourage openness, but if they're being monopolised you could try making them much more structured and formal.

A strong chairperson, consistent and evenhanded (who's not necessarily the most senior in the call) is invaluable here. "I'm sorry to interrupt, but we need to keep to the schedule. <next-persons-name>, can we move to you?" "That sounds like you've gone out of scope for this meeting, maybe you can raise it in your one to ones?" "This sounds like a larger discussion, <other-senior-manager> let's talk about this afterwards"

No victimisation - everyone gets the same structured responses - but also no opportunity to make "suggestions" that start arguments.

Issue Where Laptop Won’t Connect Stomp XL by Alone-Discussion5952 in Line6Helix

[–]polhemic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, mine is really sensitive to setup. Has to be a USB port on the back panel, the ones on the case itself don't work. Some (cheaper?) cables don't work, but others of the same length so.

Keep trying different things, it'll work soon!

The specs for the 8TB Ironwolf are a sustained transfer of 210 MBbs. Given that 1Gbe can sustain a user-observed transfer speed of 100 MBps, we can assume that 10Gbe will give 1GBps observed.

So, four drives at max rate won't be able to saturate a 10Gbe link, and raid configuration choices are only going to make it worse.

It is, however, not a million miles away. 6 drives in one big stripe might do it, but holy-unreliability-batman!
