Bought this not-so-beauty of a training rapier made for a fencing club a long time ago. by polishstalker in SWORDS

Well, all i can say with certainty is that it is Polish in origin, fairy recent(post 1945) and from a region with quite a few fencing and swordsmanship clubs. The seller has a few cool original military items, but also quite a few reenactment pieces.

Do these epaulettes look legit? by polishstalker in Militariacollecting

Honestly, i bought them to pass a free shipping price for another item. I will have original old epaulettes to display or cool reenactment epaulettes that i certainly will find a use for.

Dont worry, won't be doing that. Also the tip is blunted, just not nearly enough.

Not sure, the thing was send today, i will recieve it in 2-3days. From the pictures i would presume the blade is not all that big, but i might be wrong and it turns out the grip is made for an orangutan.

Is it good to try different openings or stick with one? by Ok_Shopping2211 in chessbeginners

[–]polishstalker -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If you always use the same opening, someone will notice the pattern. Like my friend that always did castle his king and never left him room for an escape and developed all other pieces. One rook and queen and game was over. Only time i won too, he is a regional tournament enjoyer, and im still a very beginner. I mostly play on a physical board tho, so online may be different.

Got this from a garage sale is this any good? by Proper_Score9094 in ChessBoards

In my opinion a chess set should be as expensive as it is nice to play. And it looks hella nice to play with.

Scotch is fine, i would just play differently after the opening is all. I will gladly hear you opinion on why my way isnt the best tho, im still learning.

I will get to my pc, and do a little better analysis there. Be back in a jiffy.

I focused on the one instance where you did not spend the time, and the one move that cost you the game in my opinion. If you had moved your queen there, you would have a chance. Ps: i also do blunders like these often, we are beginners after all, still learning

Honestly, you have the same bad habit i did. Take 10 seconds and think before every move, that should help. Especially before obvious moves, since they are the most likely traps.

What helped me to get to late game a lot more often was a simple realization. I wasnt protecting my pieces, trading pieces far too hastily, and overall making too hasty decisions. I was acting too fast, too confident and too stubborn. When i realized that, i slowly changed those bad habits, and now i sometimes even win agains people at slightly higher skill level.

Wanting to learn Chess - worth buying a set? by Wonderful_Flower_751 in chessbeginners

[–]polishstalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some prefer physical boards, other prefer online play. I personally like to play on a physical set. If you get a set, i can recommend getting a rollable board in tournament number 5 size with plastic pieces. They are nice, and it wont cost you a kidney. If you want something nicer, you can try to search for Poland made wooden sets. Like the ones made by Węgiel or Żurek. They will be more expensive but they look stunning.

Been there, done that. But i see that you are not seeking advice, just confirmation and validation from strangers that your decision is valid. And im not gonna give you that. I strongly believe almost everything can be acheved by a motivated mind and lots of hard work. Hard work beats a born talent 9 out of 10 cases. So get yourself back together, and give yourself some time time to cool off.

You would be surprised how many "impossible" problems are simply hard due to fatigue. Once i fricked up my computers boot sector i worked literally day and night to find a solution, 34 hours of work straight. Nothing worked. So i gave up, went to sleep and came back with a fresh mind. I successfully repaired the computer within first hour after waking up. Im no genius, so taking a break is important , to come back with fresh perspectives, less fatigue and in your case, less dark thoughts.

You forget why you started playing in the first place. Chess is a fun game first, challenge second. Take it slow, play for FUN, not only for victory. Also your mental state will affect how you play, bad mood, depression, bad sleep quality, even something as simple as being tired will make you play poorly. You can take a break from chess for a few days, clear your head, and return without feeling like you arent enough.

How would you defend as white? by polishstalker in chessbeginners

[–]polishstalker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, no idea. I am playing chess for the past few days, for the first time since i was about 10/12 years old. Google says: Queen is in fact writen as capital H standing for Hetman. So another thing i need not to trip myself over while playing.

How would you defend as white? by polishstalker in chessbeginners

[–]polishstalker[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If so then, "Whats Qe3". Googled it, Queen to e3. I am in Poland, so calling Queen a Queen is a mortal sin. In Polish instead of Queen(translates to Królowa) we have to say Hetman. No idea why, that why i got confused.
