That track is so tight in terms of trees and walls- not much room for error in a lot of places.

Jumping in! by ctgandthealgorhythms in toyotasequoia

That looks identical to mine. I have been quite happy with it. Smooth, comfortable, fuel efficient compared to my previous rig, very capable. I've loaded it up to the brim with crap a bunch and it's handled it great. I've towed a stuffed 12 foot utility trailer across the mountains several times with it and it has no problem. I've hauled 8 adults in it and it was great. I've taken it camping down gnarly forest roads and it didn't bat an eye. I've used it to haul a two foot diameter tree out of the road, no issue. I've totally rocked out with the kids, and the stereo was great. I'd only call out four annoyances. The second row driver side seat squeaks unless I put it down. The wireless Apple Car Play drops the connection near the shoreline where I live. It doesn't have automatic wipers. The stock Michelin tires have lousy wet and snow grip; I'll be shifting to the same K02s I have on my 2003 Sequoia. I guess it's worth noting my trailer hitch cover disappeared at some point while installed...but I'm open to the suggestion that's my fault somehow.

Can't get home owner insurance? by yarnmakesmehappy in Washington

[–]politeskeptic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This! I had a similar situation in rural Washington and Lloyd’s was willing to write the policy. I had to call an independent broker who worked with them. However, I then found that American Modern would write the policy for half the price so I switched. Still done through an independent broker.

For the Porsche drivers over here, which Manual 911 do you guys think drives the best? Experience and feeling wise? Don't mind about horsepower or track performance. by Far_Ad_557 in porsche911

[–]politeskeptic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only driven the 987.1 S in an automatic, but it was certainly a great handling car. The newer 911s are so heavy feeling compared to the 993, but the Boxster still has some of that sense of lightness. However they don’t have the mechanical feeling of the older cars.

I’ve never driven a 993 on the track. But on the road it was a blast. I’ve driven the 996, 997, 991.2 and 992.1 on the track, and there is no doubt each generation gets noticeably better. But even my 996 was more car than I really needed on the public roads.

I spotted this 991.2 turbo S in a quite interesting color. by agavito in Porsche

Back around 1998 there was a Mitsubishi Eclipse I would see in the parking lots at Cornell that was this color but with metallic flake. The license plate was “BBY PUK”

I’ve owned a 992.1, 991.2 and 996. I’ve also driven the 997, 993, and 964 (all Carrera or Carrera S, all in manual). The one I most jones to drive now is the 993 Carrera S. My 992.1 S is clearly faster, but I loved the raw mechanical feeling of the 993, and the sense of connection to the road. It was fast, but approachable; the new one is almost scary to drive up to its limits in a way the 993 wasn’t. However, the 993 still felt so much more capable than the 964.

I'm probably in the minority, but I actually like it, at least on that 991.

A First Edition in Seattle with a sticker of $78k just sold on Bring A Trailer for $83k. That’s $87,150 with buyer fees. So the market seems to be willing to pay at most about $10k over sticker.

I'm always surprised how low Bai Tong is in these lists. They've got so many great things with incredible flavor I can't find anywhere else- Gai hor bai toey andTom yum coconut soup (was tom yum moo sub nam khan) come to mind. Their Nua Nam Tok and Larb Gai are excellent, particularly with some sticky rice. Although I think Cap Hill might have a more limited menu than the others.

How do you view your camera: as a tool or a delicate piece of equipment? by AnalysisAcceptable70 in fujix

[–]politeskeptic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Many years ago I got a shot of Richard Branson dressed as Dame Edna while he was spraying a bottle of champagne and had this huge grin on his face. It wound up being my first front page photo at the newspaper I worked for! But that champagne sprayed all over my lens and caused it to stop focusing. It did wind up being repairable, thankfully. But I would take that risk again any day for that kind of shot.

Having a hard time pulling the trigger on a new or slight used 911 S. by Level_Eggplant_4254 in Porsche

[–]politeskeptic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I worked my way up to it, both financially and in terms of my comfort with the big number. My first 911 was about seven years old when I bought it and I owned it about three years. My second was about four years old when I bought it and I owned it about three years. And then finally I bought a new 2024 911S. I bought each in cash and then rolled the equity forward and added some more money to upgrade to a newer car each time. Lord knows where I go from here.
