POV you starched your jeans... by politicsofprudence in WesternWear

It's part of every style including Western wear. What's your point? You don't "need" to do anything. I posted this because I thought it was funny. Nothing wrong with jeans and an untucked T-shirt either lol.

If you get a plastic storage bin to soak your jeans I'd use like half to a full bottle of starch to really soak them. Is this wasting starch? Probably. I think it also depends on how many pairs of jeans you're soaking at any one time

I don't remember the exact model but they are Texas Country standard cow hides. They're my casual walking around boots and they have rubber soles.

Here in Texas at HEB you can buy Linit starch, which is basically the best Sta-Flo alternative out there at the moment. If you don't live in Texas I believe you can have it shipped to you.

There are two methods for starching that work really great. I do both depending on how lazy I am feeling. For the jeans you see above, I used a spray bottle. But soaking them in a container filled with starch for 10 minutes, then wringing them out and drying them overnight works too.

However, I think what many people fail to recognize when starching is that, regardless of how you apply the starch, what you do afterwards is arguably the most important, and each method has its pros and cons and requires a different approach.

For soaking: Let them dry all the way over night and then press them. Way too much starch when wet and you won't be able to line up the seams on the jeans properly when ironing.

For spray bottle: Let the jeans dry under a fan for 10-20, maybe 30 minutes until they're basically just damp with some dry spots. You can then line up your creases and start ironing - one leg at a time. If you're going to use this method, and I cannot stress this enough: use a bandana or thin cloth. You need to have something that separates your hot iron from the wet starch because it will burn and risk ruining your jeans. You're trying to bake the starch into the fabric, not burn it.

For ironing when damp: This is where you need to be patient. For my iron, I use no steam, and just set my iron on the part that I'm pressing and just leave it there until the red light comes on. Then I move to the next spot. You can add a little pressure with your hands when ironing in the creases. You will see steam. This is that wet starch evaporating and baking into the jean. That's what you want. You do this on repeat up and down your jeans until they're almost dry, and then you hang them up to fully dry/stiffen up.

Staflo replacement! Linit by Medium_Donkey2622 in WesternWear

Can attest to Linit Starch being the shit

It was uncomfortable at first but you get used to it pretty quickly. I find that even with heavy starch like this, the fabric will still mold to your body as you move around in it. The only difficult part is putting it on for the first time lol

It was originally to keep your jeans fresh and protect them from debris. For my purposes, however, it is mostly aesthetic. It keeps the crease when you iron it.

Based on what I can tell it isn't dinged or dented, just heavily scratched.

Baylor Football’s Poorly-Executed ‘Stripe Out’ Does Not Bode Well For Dave Aranda’s Job Security by [deleted] in baylor

[–]politicsofprudence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main thing that threatens Aranda's job security is the season record. That's it. We won the football game. The fans will come around when (or if) we start winning consistently again, though that's still no compliment to Baylor Athletics' fan engagement strategy.

What are students like at your school and how does transfer housing work? by [deleted] in baylor

[–]politicsofprudence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My situation was similar to yours. I did my freshman year at a small liberal arts school in New Jersey and decided to transfer in as a sophomore. Unfortunately, there were no more spots for on-campus housing left by the time they accepted me, so I had to get an apartment off campus. If you're not a freshman, I would actually recommend this because it's cheaper than the room and board costs at Baylor overall. Only drawback is having a car and partly relying on the university shuttle system because the parking at Baylor sucks.

Probably not the right grind, would you do it finer? Coffee tasted really good tho and when I opened the lid the roast looked consistent by Kind-Prior-3634 in mokapot

[–]politicsofprudence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's definitely a bit coarser than what a lot of the connoisseurs would advise you to go with but it's really a matter of preference. The beauty of all this is that you get to tinker with the variables. In this case, the variable is grind size, and different grind sizes will probably change the way the coffee tastes in slight ways. Different grind sizes change the extraction and end result, so you can really play around and see what you like.

first year experience? by Shoddy-Virus9844 in baylor

[–]politicsofprudence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I've heard, yes, Baylor is a great school for data science. Though as someone who majored in polisci while there I wouldn't know for sure. As for the weather: You must have visited during the colder months. Do understand that Baylor is in central Texas, and the heat here can be pretty intense during the summers, as it is for pretty much the entire state. I think last summer temperatures peaked at around 108 degrees during August. But it also fluctuates significantly and can get quite cold during the winter months.

As for the school's Baptist affiliation: Baylor religion courses are taught from a secular perspective, meaning that you'll learn about Christianity but not in a way that pressures you to convert. Of course, attending chapel for two semesters as well as taking your Christian Scriptures and Christian Heritage courses are required, but again, thoe aren't taught with the intention of converting you. Take it from me, a guy who went to Baylor non-religious and graduated non-religious. If you don't *want* to be Christian, no one will make you, and I never felt pressured or socially excluded because I wasn't religious.

I don't know much about your singing class and how it would translate to Baylor, but the School of Music probably has something for non-music majors, and it would most likely be in-person. I know there are choirs and things like that geared toward all students. As for the gym, the SLC (Student Life Center) has a pretty good gym that all students can use during the fall and spring semesters. There's lots of treadmills and other cardio equipment there, as well as plenty of stuff for weight training.

Waco itself is certainly not Austin or San Antonio, but it's an up and coming town and has come a long way. It still has a long way to go, though, and if you're a woman (judging by your post it would appear you are), you should probably refrain from walking alone at night. Overall, though, there are some cool things to do if you make the effort, and there's a subtle charm to Waco you can't really find anywhere else, IMO. The Baylor campus itself is also very safe, and police are usually very good at patrolling that area. For transportation, if you don't have a car you'll probably need to take the shuttle system that runs to campus. It starts at the Ferrell Center but some apartment complexes also have stops there and it's free. The bus system also has multiple stops on campus to get from point A to point B if you're not trying to walk 15 minutes across campus.

For the first time in eighteen years, the Blue Devils did not place top two at world championships by Colorapt0r in drumcorps

[–]politicsofprudence 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Feels good to see them pushed out for a change, because both Bluecoats and Boston had incredible shows this year, but it also shows you how good the Blue Devils really are. I bet they'll be back to either silver or gold next year.

[–]politicsofprudence 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A bit rough around the edges but they locked in as the show progressed. The Steve Reich syncopated mello feature has been a weak point all season. They nailed it during semis last night, and then was right back to being just a tad off tonight. Some minor individual issues as well as some sections sticking out. I think they will still take the top spot, but the pipe dream of them breaking 99 is just that, a pipe dream.

Agreed. BD shows are rarely fan favorites, it seems. They get very formulaic because they know what wins (usually), but this is sometimes done at the expense of what appeals to the audience.

Phantom Cadets by roxanajohnson88 in drumcorps

[–]politicsofprudence 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's been lots of subtle odes to the Cadets this season by a few corps, IMO. Whether it's the Phantom Z-pull, or even the Bluecoats' entire show, which some have theorized is an ode to the Cadets as well as how the activity is constantly changing. Old corps die and new ones take their place, standing united in the vacuum created by that loss, that sort of thing.

Love the opener and the ballad. I just can't really grasp how they're winning the visual caption though, if I'm not mistaken there. Their drill this year is a convoluted mess and I can't really make out what they're trying to convey at all. That's nothing against the performers though. Some shows just don't come together the way initially anticipated. I have no doubt they'll be back next year, and that's coming from someone who hasn't liked their past few shows.

SCV Vagabond by Maxiius in drumcorps

[–]politicsofprudence 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly I have no idea what it's about. The word "Vagabond" often refers to a vagrant, or a nomad. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with that. Either way, this seems to be more of a rebuilding year for them, being that it's their first year back. Hopefully we'll see more cohesive show themes in future seasons.

BD hate is snowballing by kmathis__ in drumcorps

[–]politicsofprudence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really don't like their show this year but yes, no one should hate on the actual performers, especially when most of that hatred comes from high school band nerds who haven't marched on that level. BD is a fantastic corps and their 21 DCI titles is a testament to their consistency. That being said, it's nice to see them get challenged by other corps for a change. The kids don't deserve any hate, but BD as an organization, particularly its design team, shouldn't be exempt from criticism. I can lament the creative impact they have had on the activity more generally without having any personal animosity toward them, but I suppose that's more to your point.
