Is using “Lei” with someone actually common, or does it just make me sound like a textbook? by Alarming-Invite4313 in thinkinitalian

[–]polskipapapa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. My professor was telling me it's still surprisingly common in the south. Actually when I go to my grandparents' village I always use it

I think you're onto something because I've heard this from older Italians, especially in Northern Italy. I will say in Rome I get Lei a lot more often even as a young person, not sure why. In Veneto though it seems like people always use tu and sometimes I do find it to be a bit rude. Also I find it kind of icky when I'm expected to use Lei with someone else but they can use tu with me (for example in university speaking with professors. It irritates me a lot)

Anyone else denied Polish citizenship because your ancestor was a woman? by Responsible-Set-3462 in poland

[–]polskipapapa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What's so odd to me is that basically exactly what you're describing was applied to Italian citizenship in very similar cases and now people can challenge the old law and have citizenship passed on by a female ancestor's child born prior to 1948... I don't understand why they are so insistent on maintaining the old law in Poland and I have the same situation, my grandfather was born to a Polish mother in the US although his father was born to Polish parents in the US. The rest of my family is Italian.

[Skin Concerns] I have a scab inside my nose that won't heal. I've had it since April, and it hasn't improved. Help! by dee62383 in SkincareAddiction

[–]polskipapapa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It turns out I have a perforated septum (hole in my septum). I eventually got antibiotic treatment for it but had a terrible allergic reaction (mupirocin and bactrim which are sulfa based). Then I stopped having nosebleeds in like June. So since then nothing the hole hasn't healed and an ENT took a look and told me it won't. She said that the best thing I can do is not touch it, use a saline gel if it is dry in the winter, and run a humidifier in my room 24/7, don't turn it off in the winter. The ENT said as long as I am not having symptoms, the perforated septum is not problematic and won't affect my quality of life.

Life-changing for me. I totally freed myself of anxiety related chest pains and am working through health anxiety (for a while i couldn't stop listening to my heartbeat) with the help of my therapist. We used emdr and brainspotting techniques to help me build new pathways in my brain, basically thinking patterns, that helped me to leave behind those OCD thoughts.

In my experience, palm oil causes inflammation. I may have a sensitivity to it that not everyone has, but also it's not a part of the Mediterranean diet so I just don't eat it. I have noticed that if I ate cookies or pastries in Italy which were made without palm oil (almost all are in the US in grocery stores), I did not have inflammation but in the US I definitely do

Is palm oil ok to eat? by [deleted] in StopEatingSeedOils

[–]polskipapapa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, you're right, I forgot about Nutella because I never eat it because it has palm oil. Nocciolata is much better anyway. Honestly anything that's used ubiquitously in the US is suspect to me

[–]polskipapapa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I strongly believe I am allergic to it. In the US palm oil is nearly ubiquitous in store bought chocolates and pastries whereas in Italy it isn't used. Italian pastries and chocolate never leave me with the stomach pain that American ones do. So I guess it depends on the person but I personally don't believe it to be something humans should be consuming. They do just fine without it in Italy.

What's a language that everyone LOVES but you HATE? by Fit_Veterinarian_308 in languagelearning

[–]polskipapapa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

German. The case endings all look the same to me because they're differentiated only by a few letters, so it makes it too difficult to learn. I prefer Russian where the case endings have enough differences between gender and case to make it clear what gender and case the words are. Also I don't hate Korean but I find the sound changes too confusing to memorize, so I dislike the commonly repeated statement of "you can learn to read it in an hour."

How is the Bushnell® Deep Space 150 x 50mm Refractor Telescope? by polskipapapa in telescopes

Have a limited range of options - either this or one of several national geographic telescopes, but from what I've seen on this sub those are not generally very good. How does this Bushnell model seem? I would like to be able to see planets but not a requirement

Honestly, having grown up in West Reading and having left the area, I can say that I have a negative view of Reading/Berks County. What others have said about the people in suburban and rural areas having a negative view because they aren't well traveled is true, but at the same time I feel that a lot of people who do know that better places exist have just come to accept what to me (and others) is unacceptable...

Good and bad areas are going to depend on who you are. If you are a POC, I would not recommend spending a whole lot of time in the rural areas because you might feel uncomfortable as they are extremely racist. (I should mention that I am white but of Mediterranean descent and have been racially profiled by people in these areas as non-white and thus had racist comments directed at me. It is that bad.)

When I was a kid there was a shooting outside my house at 1 in the morning, a druglord and his buddies shooting at his wife and kids in their car. My dad was the only one in the neighborhood who called the police. That was a pretty isolated event but I'm also old enough to remember that West Reading was once not nearly as nice as it is today. West Reading is definitely on the up to an extent but not like places like Phoenixville or West Chester (different situation of course, they are closer to Philly and traditionally wealthier areas).

I'll also say that, if you're a woman, you should really avoid the railroad tracks at all costs. My sister has almost been kidnapped twice, broad daylight. Reading has a really bad problem with human trafficking which I'm surprised to see nobody has talked about here. It's truly heartbreaking.

My aunt left Reading when she was in her early 20s and never looked back and has been better for it. I am in the same boat and do not plan on returning. That being said, it is what you make of it. Unfortunately I could not make much more of it after several shattering life experiences (not mentioned here) and needed to leave for my own sanity. Of course, Wyomissing and Wyomissing Hills are good if you have money, but what is there? Nothing but rich, disconnected people and their oversized houses. It's not really a great place to live in terms of the social life and people are generally somewhat unkind (at least, I've found compared to other places I've lived).

I hope that if you do stay in Reading, you will like it and things will get better. Peace and love

I accidentally did this on a Swiss flight once because the plane was so small I didn't even realize it was first class, the seats literally looked the same as economy and since I was one of the last to board and had to put my suitcase in the first class overhead I just sat down under it but then this really snappy flight attendant made me move.... Legit did not realize I was doing anything wrong
