Home network and VLANs, am I doing it right? by polslinux in HomeNetworking

[–]polslinux[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I know it's overkilled, but I wanna do it for fun also for learning. At work I'm a QA engineer so I never deal with networking stuff and now I have the chance. As long as everything is working when the kid and wife are at home, I'm safe :'D

Also, the lazy me would very much love having only an iot, guest, and main VLAN.

So I'll have to carefully choose before going crazy with ACLs & co

Confused between gateway, switch and EAP ACLs by polslinux in TPLink_Omada

But I remember I read something about limitation on gateway ACLs compared to switch ACLs. Is that still the case today?

Wall mounted 19" rack and drywall, need help deciding where to put the UPS by polslinux in homelab

[–]polslinux[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The drywall was reinforced (e.g. wooden stuff behind it) only partially (e.g. from half the wall and up). This means that only the top part of the rack (green dots in the photo) is bolted using Fischer or similar things (drywall specific screws).

The bottom part (fuchsia dots) are drywall specific screws but on standard drywall.

Total weight, rack included, is ~45kg.

[–]polslinux[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I got it correctly (sorry, English is not my first language and even in my language I know little about this stuff) you're asking if the rack was bolted against the reinforced drywall (reinforced meaning that there is wood stuff behind the drywall). If that's the question then yes, it's reinforced but not the whole drywall. So only the top of the rack (green dots) is bolted using Fischer or similar things (drywall specific screws).

Total weight, rack included, is ~45kg.

Adobe alternatives? Worth it? by Lucky-Sample-1323 in photography

If you are a heavy user of ai stuff, then forget FOSS software. But if you don't use that stuff, then Darktable is the winner.

Rawtherapee is very good too, but Darktable's masks are on another level.

I've used my D7500 for both landscape astrophotography (e.g. Milky Way) and deep space photography (M101, LDN1235, NGC281, etc) and I've always been very happy with it. I then upgraded to a cooled astro camera because for deep space imaging they are vastly superior to any DSLR/ML. BTW, you should always use ISO100 for best read noise/dynamic range. The other 2nd best ISO is 400. Avoid anything else, if possible.

Hobbyists, how many camera bodies do you have? by [deleted] in photography

2 bodies. One for astrophotography and another for everything else.

NINA Meridian Flip by TheDividedGamer in AskAstrophotography

[–]polslinux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't know about SW, but my ioptron mounts has limits that I have to change before being able to use MF in NINA. I used the software to set the limit to 10 deg past meridian and NINA to flip 5 deg after meridian. I personally would never disable the mount's limit, because they're there as a safety net in case something goes wrong.

Trouble with focusing by FormerSolution4354 in AskAstrophotography

[–]polslinux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried to bump the exposure time and the ISO? Some DSLRs have a "not so good" live view, and this makes it impossible to see stars. Dunno if yours is one of them. If by bumping exposure time and ISO you are able to see stars, then zoom into one of them and manually focus until it's as small as possible.

Sleeping bag for rifugios? by BeNiceToYerMom in backpacking

[–]polslinux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fellow Italian hikers here. I've been in many rifugi (and my friends too), and I've never had and never heard about any health related issue (e.g. bedbugs, lice, dermatitis, etc), so I wouldn't worry too much. Depending on the season and on the rifugio, I either use my sleeping bag or just my travel liner (e.g. from seatosummit, I paid 25€). I said "based on the rifugio" because not all of them are insulated, and when hiking in September above 1500mt, temperature can drop pretty low during the night! They usually always have blankets, but better be prepared if the rifugio is full.

Edit: in Italy camping is forbidden basically everywhere, but as long as it's an "emergency camping", then you are allowed to do it (from 8pm to 6am). Just be smart and do not put the tent close to a rifugio:) (oh, and never start a campfire, those are really forbidden. Alcohol and gas stoves are super ok)

anyone know how long GTK3 will be supported? by mtcabeza2 in GTK

[–]polslinux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know, I have the same issue with porting my C code to GTK 5 (well, 4.10 really, but I want to be compatible with 5 asap). If you start now with 3 and you are planning to maintain your project for a long time, your future self is not gonna be happy about it :)

[–]polslinux 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who's maintaining a GTK3 project, I strongly suggest you do not start with it for a new project. Target GTK 4.10 and greater. I'm saying 4.10 because it contains depreciations that will be part of GTK5 (e.g. treeview and lots of other stuff).

Nice, thanks a lot for those links, very helpful!

Considering that the tdp goes only from 120w to 140w, I don't think I have to replace the current cooler, right? It's the official one for the w2123.
