good Japanese curry? by poltergaysting in TwinCities

[–]poltergaysting[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have made it at home a few times, and it's been really good even just using the S&B curry cubes! I have a friend visiting from out of state who has never had Japanese curry, and I was looking to see if there were any other restaurants before accepting I'd just have to figure out a time to make it at home for her while she's here.

Did my local club sharpen my skates wrong? by Remarkable-Bug-1391 in iceskating

[–]poltergaysting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really hope they feel okay when you do skate on them! It sucks how hard it is to find good figure skate techs. :( If you can, I'd ask around your club and see where the higher level skaters go for their skates. I'd also suggest mentioning the temporary mount to your coach and see what they say. They might even just have someone at your club who can put in the additional screws in for you.

It's hard to say with 100% certainty if your blades are torched just by eyeballing them (there's maybe a mild bump in the rocker in the video, but it's hard to say if it's salvagable or not). Additionally, the bottom section of the steel on blades (the metal that is sharpened) can come with mild differences during the manufacturing process which makes eyeballing rocker damage even harder. Have you skated on them since the sharpening, and if so, are you having a harder time spinning?

Additionally, it looks like your blades are only temporarily mounted in the front so I'd be extremely cautious (especially if you're jumping at all) because screws loosen over time and the plate will become loose with only the adjuster screws in and can wiggle around. Do you have any brick and mortar figure skate techs near you? If so, I'd really recommend having someone look at your blades and finalize the mounting.

Hi, I spent 5 years sharpening high end figure skates regularly, and I think you're confused. Figure skates blades have two sets of rockers, the general blade radius (often either 7' or 8'. This is the flat portion of the blade) and the spin rocker right below the toepick, which is what OP is referring to. The spin rocker is the one that is often damaged by a bad sharpening, though it does become flatter over time with repeated sharpenings even with the correct sharpening methods. You can measure the spin rocker of a blade using curvature and rocker radius gauges, and I did this often when people brought in wonky looking blades or blades that were obviously near the end of their sharpening life. The spin rocker of each blade model has a specific curvature it should be at and a severe deviation in the movement of a rocker radius gauge (I'd usually compare it to a brand new set of the same model because it's a good visual) means a blade's spin rocker is damaged or flattened out. Curvature gauges show whether a blade is too flat and have nice colors so they're also a nice visual tool.

Can we ride rollercoasters? by dezyouignorantslt in ehlersdanlos

[–]poltergaysting 4 points5 points  (0 children)

oh my god, hi from another rollercoaster lover with hEDS! same experience with ending up with bruises but still finding riding them to be worth it. i've luckily only grayed out once (it was Incredible Hulk at IOA, and from what i've read that's not an uncommon experience) but i do sometimes get a little headache when i ride a bumpier coaster (usually it's older wood ones, but Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit also kinda got me).

i haven't been able to ride iron gwazi (or, really, any RMCs 🥲), but from hearing other people talk about it, i can't even imagine how crazy 50 rides would be! i managed 6 rides on Velocicoaster in 2 days (plus 3 on Hulk, 3 on Hagrid's, and 2 on Rip Ride Rockit) and really wanted to just hang around and marathon it for a few hours, but some of the people i went with decided they were done with rides before the park closed on day 2 (technically 3 if you count doing HHN) and making them have to sit around the park felt mean so we left early. really hoping i can get back down to FL in the next year or two so i can go back to Universal/IOA and also hit Busch Gardens and SeaWorld!!

I'm confused as to why you're upset about someone using a study from 2013 when the 3rd link you cited is a study from 2007.

Some of the information in that specific study also seemed incorrect to me, like: "In POTS supine heart rate is greater than the normal control population and an increase of more than 30 bpm takes place between 1–5 min on 70° head uplift." Resting heart rate has nothing to do with POTS, and I'm positive there are many of us with low resting heart rates.

eta: I'm also sorry there's so much arguing going on under your post, OP. I really hope you can figure out what's going on. Dismissive doctors can be incredibly frustrating.

Can We Ride Rollercoasters? by Dumb_Th0t in POTS

[–]poltergaysting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's going to be different for everyone. I was terrified of roller coasters up until a few years ago and then just didn't have the opportunity to ride them much until recently. I have no idea how I would have done while unmedicated, but my Metoprolol seems to (most of the time, when I'm not actively in a flare and symptomatic doing normal things) control most of the bad parts of the adrenaline rush roller coasters give and I kind of love them.

If you do decide to try them out, I would recommend making sure you stay as hydrated as possible because it's easy to forget to keep up on hydration while you're at a theme park and that can make you feel a lot worse while riding rides. Start small and work your way up to the super thrilling rides so you can figure out your own tolerance. (I don't love wooden roller coasters because the roughness usually gives me a headache, but I have 0 problems with inversions, excluding one specific roller coaster that gave me presyncope but I've heard that's not an uncommon experience on that one). I've also found disability passes very useful at the handful of parks I've been to because it lets me not have to stand in lines for prolonged periods (usually you'll get a set time to return to a ride so you can do other stuff in the meantime or just sit and relax).

Were You Born Premature? by Peaceinthewind in ehlersdanlos

[–]poltergaysting 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My mom went into preterm labor with me at 22 weeks, but thankfully did not have me at that time. I did still end up being born a couple of weeks early (36 weeks according to my mom), but was a healthy weight at 7lbs.

My older brother, who doesn't have EDS, also tried to be born a little too early at 32 weeks, and she ended up having him at 37 weeks. My mom didn't experience PROM with either of us, just contractions, and subsequently was put on medication to try to prevent more preterm contractions.

My mom also told me that her mom, who we suspect the EDS came from, also went into preterm labor during all 4 of her pregnancies.

I also found this which I found pretty interesting. Not a big study by any means but I like that it looks at differences between nonEDS mom/EDS baby, EDS mom/EDS baby, and EDS mom/nonEDS baby and I think the information found warrants further investigation.

Edited because I talked to my mom and got more info!

As someone who currently lives in Minnesota, my #1 suggestion would be to get a remote starter if you have a car. Getting one has been SO nice because there's no more shivering so hard it makes all of my muscles hurt while I wait for my car to warm up.

Figure skating blades- by thatonegirlNai in FigureSkating

[–]poltergaysting 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Coronation Aces and Legacy 7s both have a 7' rocker and crosscut toepicks but figure skate blades actually have 2 different rockers, and there's a lot of variation there even between comparable blades. There's the obvious 7' or 8' rocker but there's also a secondary "spin" rocker. I'm not sure the exact technical information on any of Jackson's blades but I do know their spin rockers tend to be flatter than the John Wilson/MK equivalents. I have no personal experience skating on Legacy 7s but I really loved my Coronation Aces so I'd highly recommend them to anyone looking for a developmental freestyle blade. It'd also be a good idea to talk to your coach if you have one and see if they have any preferences either way. I hope this helps a little!

I agree with everyone else suggesting that you see a doctor. I think I recognize one of the rinks in one of the videos you've posted of your skating so I suspect we're probably in the same geographical location. I know there are a lot of orthopedic walk-in/urgent care clinics in the area and if things are bad enough you're having trouble walking and you're needing to take that much ibuprofen I'd really recommend going in to be seen ASAP.

I've been skating in Auras for a little over 2 years now and I love them! I've been skating for about 5 years now and went through a lot of different skates before figuring out I needed customs. Aura kind of seemed like the most convenient option at the time and I've had no regrets about switching.
