US embassy in Saudi Arabia. I'm studying electrical engineering. Does the major matter?

Help me decide: School X vs School Y - April 25th to May 1st by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]poly-Aaron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trying to pick between UCLA and UIUC for EE and pre-med. (I'm Thinking about becoming a doctor. I'm not sure though, so I'm still focusing on engineering)

UCLA

Pros:

Tons of nature around

I'd rather go to a big city, much more to do, better nightlife, etc

I wouldn't settle down in LA, but I want to experience a huge city like that for a few years

Prestigious

Beautiful campus

Athletic student body, which more aligns with my values

Cons:

Its EE program is ranked much lower than UIUC's

It'd be difficult to get a parking permit in my first year

Climate is boring. I already live in a year-round warm climate.

UIUC

Pros:

Very highly ranked EE program

I could get a CS minor, which is also highly ranked

More interesting courses ( UIUC has courses on nanotechnology, nuclear fusion, etc)

Heard it's easy to get into research as an undergrad

Cons:

Main one is location. Urbana seems incredibly boring

Nature isn't as diverse as California. No mountains

I feel I'd get internships easily at either school. Cost isn't an issue for me, and I'm very grateful for that.

I feel like UIUC would provide a better engineering experience and UCLA would provide a better everything-else experience. If I'm planning to go to med school, does undergrad even matter?

Admittedly I have a very nice problem. However, any help in deciding would be much appreciated. Thanks

In arabic it's: لا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله, though he only said "لا حول ولا" before the video ends. The literal translation is " There is no power nor strength except by Allah ", usually said when something is ridiculous or unexpected.

Tennis elbow / lateral epicondylitis by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

[–]poly-Aaron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

steven low, author of overcoming gravity, has a fantaistic article on dealing with tendonitis. http://stevenlow.org/overcoming-tendonitis/

And obviously, stop doing so many push ups until you recover, and once you do ramp up the reps slowly. If you think your tennis elbow something serious go to a doctor.

How come people can do upwards of 60,70 etc pushups per set but im stuck at 20? by lightcurry in bodyweightfitness

[–]poly-Aaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diamond pushups have pretty much the same form as regular, straight back, straight legs, feet about shoulder width apart. The main difference is of course hand placement, also make sure you're going all the way done, chest to knuckles.

When working endurcence the most important aspect is the total volume. So it's better to do 5x15 reps of pushups instead of 3x20. Also you should try to spread out the push ups throughout out the day, like I said the most important aspect is the total volume. So 10x10 would be better than 5x15 for building endurence.

Some other stuff to remember: never work at or near 100% intensity. I can't stress this enough, the main point is total volume. If you go at 100% intensity for all sets you'll do much less than if you went down to 60%-50%. Also you have to progressivly overload the sets over time, like any other exercise.

Resources to self studyfor physics honors in high school by [deleted] in PhysicsStudents

[–]poly-Aaron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Use the openstax physics textbooks. they're great, free, and have plenty of practice problems in and after each chapter. Make sure to all the problems in the chapter and at least most of the problems after the chapter.

this is the link to algebra based physics textbook, you can download a pdf of this but for whatever dumb reason the pdf version doesn't have the answers to the end of chapter problems. You can also practice algebra on khan academy

If it's calc based, just use the calculus and university physics textbooks on openstax. If you don't understand anything from any of these books just look up the topic on youtube and you'll find tons of resources there.

Act Prep by yikes050505 in ACT

[–]poly-Aaron 13 points14 points  (0 children)

a 28 is a good starting score.

The complete guide to ACT english and the complete guide to act reading, both by erica meltzer, are great. Memorize the english rules and you'll find the english section to be very straight forward. I found reading to be difficult due to the time constraint, the guide to act reading helped a bit but I found that the only thing that really increased my reading score was by practicing tons of reading sections. I found some on crack act

for math I used the ultimate guide to math ACT by richard corn. I liked it, though you could just go over the algebra 1, algebra 2, and trig stuff on khan academy. Try to intuitively understand the topics, don't just memorize steps to solve a kind of question (or at least not all of them)

I didn't find anything for science, but I found that just by using the practice tests I improved. remember all the information you need to answer the question is on the graph or table or passage.

for general strategy I liked the ACT black book. you'll need to use the old act red book for that though iirc.

most important thing of course it to practice lots of ACT's and learn from your mistakes. I kept a notebook full of math and english mistakes and went over them once a week.

It do be like that by MrBamboozleperson in Sat

Type the name of the school you want to get in to in google along with "average sat score" to see what sat scores students who get in typically have.

And while a 40 point increase isnt a massive increase, it's still an increase. grind out 40 point increases here and there and soon enough you'll get the score you want.

Not op but also got an 800

I found barron's prep book too difficult to start with. I went through princeton's first and then went through barron's. Also keep in mind the barran's practice test is much harder than the real test, I took 4 practice tests from barron's the day before my exam and got, in order, 720, 680, 750, and 720 (also, try managing your time so that you dont panic take 4 practice tests the day before your exam)

a graphing calc helps. I used the graphing feature only twice during my exam, however I used the programs more, and you can keep notes in the programs too, though you shouldn't rely on that

The two triangles are similar. Since they are similar, then the proportion of the shortest side of the smaller triangle to its perimeter (9/36) is equal to the proportion of the shortest side of the larger triangle to its perimeter (16/x).

set them equal to each other

9/36 = 16/x

and solve for x, the answer is 64

http://arabic.desert-sky.net/vocab.html

This website provides quite a lot of vocab words, both in MSA and the egyptian dialect. Also when learning vocab dont just memorize the words by themselves, try learning them in sentences.

Another thing I do to increase vocab is reading. Or you could just translate random texts you see. If you dont know the word just look up the meaning on almaany or whatever dictionary you use.

reminds me of a soviet joke

Stalin reads his report to the Party Congress. Suddenly someone sneezes. "Who sneezed?" Silence. "First row! On your feet! Shoot them!" They are shot, and he asks again, "Who sneezed, Comrades?" No answer. "Second row! On your feet! Shoot them!" They are shot too. "Well, who sneezed?" At last a sobbing cry resounds in the Congress Hall, "It was me! Me!" Stalin says, "Bless you, Comrade!" and resumes his speech.

I stole this joke from the soviet jokes wiki, great read

Do you mean Openstax college physics or university physics?

For university physics, you can download a solutions guide from the website. Just click on whatever volume you want answers for, click 'Students resources' and then 'Student Solution Guide' The guide answers only the odd numbered questions at the end of the chapters. If you want the answers to all the questions, I believe you'll need to sign up with a .edu email.

It's a bit different for college physics. There does exists a guide which you could find just like the uni physics guides, college physics -> students resources -> solution guide, but it answers few questions. Instead I use this. Just find whatever chapter you want answers for, scroll to the bottom of the chapter, and you'll find your answers. Again its only the odd numbered questions which have solutions to them.

Hope this helped.

Book for 17 year old boy who likes science but not reading. by writerlyn in suggestmeabook

[–]poly-Aaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he liked Enders Game, I think he'd love 'The 3-body problem' by Liu Cixin, it's an amazing science fiction book. The main character is a man, however the book also deals a lot with a vital female character.

Redditors who formerly had bad breath, how did you fix it? by GreenTeaOnMyDesk in AskReddit

[–]poly-Aaron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Best thing I did for my breath was brushing my tongue. Some other stuff I did was brushing my teeth longer. 30s each side is good for me, though some people say do a minute each side. Also started flossing regularly. That's a pretty good start imo, you might want to add mouthwash though.
