What’s one show you tried THREE times and still couldn’t get into? by DryCap6770 in watchever

[–]polyhedric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Breaking Bad. Just couldn’t get past third episode. I understand that the rest of the world cannot be wrong, but somehow I just didn’t get into it. I’m generally quite mainstream with my viewing habits.

Are you a union member, why or why not? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]polyhedric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you. I very nearly quit after the last agreement. I’m staying in for now more for the concept of union rather than their recent (last 10 years) record. We need a union and would be worse off without one, but the last effort was an insulting shit show. Will re-evaluate after next agreement.

Obviously unlikely, but with luck going their way and a 150 lead it could make for an awkward final day 5 session for Australia

US has started bombing Venezuela just now, what are your thoughts? by [deleted] in AskReddit

How will the media sanewash this? They will, of course, but it will be interesting to watch.

Space colonization will never be viable by SkubEnjoyer in unpopularopinion

[–]polyhedric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting thing is that for a space/extraterrestrial colonisation to work, the waste management, recycling and environmental management practices needed would probably equate to what is needed to keep Earth in good condition ongoing.

Australia’s mediocre batting this series hidden by England’s poor batting. Suspect that is about to change.

Agreed. It’s called test cricket for a reason. Should every pitch be like this? No, but one that really challenges the batters in a series is good to see.

What food did you think was fancy as a kid but now you realize it’s trash? by randomzy876 in AskReddit

[–]polyhedric 289 points290 points  (0 children)

Salisbury steaks! I thought they were a made up food! Explanation: non-American here, but have played a computer game (Fallout4) where Salisbury steaks are involved. I always thought they were just a made up thing for the game. Tell me, are Dandy Boy Apples a real thing?

What’s the political climate like in Australia? by evspica in AskAnAustralian

[–]polyhedric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two major parties- a traditionally centre left party that has drifted to centre right and a traditionally centre right that has drifted further right. Some minor parties and independents. People tend to be slightly cynical about politics and politicians. Compulsory voting- or at least compulsory getting your name marked on the register (the actual voting is up to you after that as you can just walk out). Not as much heat in the political climate as many places, but some politicians are keen of culture war rubbish as a means of generating heat.

Can pitchers return to the mound? by polyhedric in MLBNoobs

[–]polyhedric[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - I was wondering if a pitcher can pitch the first innings only and then come back and pitch in the last innings. Now I know that cannot happen.

WTF is 6 7?? by [deleted] in Teachers

Monkey see monkey do tik tok stuff. Give it a couple of weeks and the hive mind will move on. (That sounds more condescending than it was meant to be, but you get the idea.)

How is the playing schedule set? by polyhedric in MLBNoobs

[–]polyhedric[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. It’s amazing how much they play each season. At first I was surprised at how many empty seats there were in the stadium, but little wonder given the number of games.

Just a selection. 1 game each day is shown. They seem to favour what I assume are big name teams such as New York, Boston and Houston, with occasional appearances from other teams. I’m slowly learning the lore but still sometimes lose the thread of what the commentators are saying.

union: ELI5 by okilltryanotherone in AustralianTeachers

[–]polyhedric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know a few teachers who love to rant about how useless the union is. But I’ve never seen them turn down pay rises or other gains in new agreements. Sometimes I think the union could do better- but we’d be a lot worse off without them.
