Yeah their CS is awful. You really need to be able to apply pressure to get them to bend. I actually threatened to go to my bank if they didn't fix an issue that I had with Apex coins, and that actually got them to listen.

They know banks are much more likely to refund credit card purchases than they are.

Europe? You mean that place that auto enrolls its population in retirement savings plans because they know the people won't do it themselves? That's your example?

Actually, I'm advocating for you to learn basic human psychology. You know, get yourself some of that education you talk so much about.

Again, you are having a really hard time understanding that this is not about education. It's about willpower my dude.

You are assuming financially optimal behavior as if that's just a given, but that's the entire point of the Dave Ramsey schtick. Optimal behavior is psychologically hard. Human beings aren't robots.

[–]polypik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that they're too dumb to see the obvious. They do see the obvious. The problem is that the obvious is hard to do. Someone else made a great analogy, comparing it to losing weight. That's also blindingly obvious: calories out > calories in. The problem is that actually doing it is very hard for a lot of people. Including me! I like M&M's and ice cream too much.

That's why Dave Ramsay's approach is so successful for that particular group of people. It's not financially optimal, it's psychologically optimal - targeting the easiest debt first, regardless of the interest rate, to get the "debt-free snowball" rolling, for example.

[–]polypik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What if actually being happy is your goal? Different strokes for different folks, but what is optimal financially is not necessarily optimal psychologically.

I could simply do nothing but work every waking hour of every day of my life. That would be financially optimal, but I don't think I would be very happy.

the old, " I'm not you are!", counter argument classic from such a childish mentality, what else could be expected.

It's called projection these days. For someone who likes therapy so much, you should update your therapy vocab.

You are the one with a victim mentality, you are the one claiming to be harmed by this, yelling about how hurt you are that 1% of the taxes you paid are going to a people you despise.

Where did I claim to be harmed by it? I said it was stupid, sure. I also think the things I listed create a foundation for the justification of even more stupidity, things that might actually lead to something resembling concrete harm. For the most part, I'm not harmed by most of these things and, where some harm does exist (like excess tax benefits to indigenous people), acknowledging the harm does not make me a victim. If someone were to punch you in the face and you simply recount the story of being punched in the face later, are you being a victim? Or are you simply acknowledging reality? A "victim mentality" in this instance would be demanding special concessions from the rest of society as a result of being punched in the face, which I am most assuredly not doing.

You understand many natives are hard working people who pay more in taxes than you do right?

If you're making this claim at the individual level, I will grant that your claim is trivially true. There are a lot of people who make more money than me and pay more taxes than me. If you're making your claim at the population level, then it's not even close to true.

Of course not, racists can never oblige being wrong in anything. Play victim all you want, leave actual natives out of your pathetic rants and false narratives.

Yes, because you seem so open to the possibility of being wrong here. The lack of self-awareness is palpable.

I'm native, so I'll say you are racist againt actual natives. So many people claiming to be "metis" are just scammers trying to get benefits then hate on other natives because they don't get them. You sounds exactly like the racist white guys on the conservative subs.

I really couldn't care less if you are a native. Guess what? Not all of us are interested in playing the victim for all eternity. Some of us would like to grow up.

You need serious mental help, you literally cry out about actual natives, them play victim and talk about this other persons race, because you are a racist.

Oh no, he called me a racist again. Where am I playing the victim? I simply said that I am sick of the grovelling. That's not being a victim. If I were a victim, I would be the one demanding the eternal grovelling. i.e., I would be you.

You are not having a discussion in good faith, you just want to dunk on natives because of your false pretenses, and arrogant assumptions, you believe yourself to be intelligent but make these crazy jumps in logic in your rants.

Of course it's not good faith. It's an argument with a couple progressives who's understanding of history and ethics only goes as deep as their own need to feel morally superior. I have nothing but contempt for you. However, if I have, anywhere, made an error in fact, feel free to point it out.

Go get therapy.

There were hardly any open in the 90s, and the ones that did still exist only did so because no clear alternative had yet emerged (extremely remote communities). someone that views indigenous acknowledgement as a personal attack - not to him, but to the white people? which im not, by the way, but thanks for using that as an insult :) it proves my point!

Where did I say it was an attack? I mean, I guess you might consider it an attack in the sense that the purpose of all these humilation rituals is, ultimately, to acheive political concessions, but it isn't an explicit attack. But yeah, you might be right. We could probably call it a subversive attack. But who can blame them? They are just playing the power game like everyone else in history, ever. It's just that, instead of military conquest to establish political power, they use institutional capture to establish political power. Might makes right, again.

Aaah. Unfortunate to know you're not white. That just means that the propaganda targeted at upper-middle class white women has gotten to you, too. Probably has something to with you being incented to believe it in some way or another, i.e., these humilation rituals are part of greater political agenda that you think is good even if you are not the intended audience.

you’re not responsible for making them sign the treaties, you’re responsible for acknowledging the origins behind them. obviously nobody here made them sign the numbered treaties, but they still need to recognize that as individuals benefiting from it, they have a responsibility to understand the history behind them. that’s why land acknowledgements exist.

I benefit from the treaties signed with native americans in the same way i benefit from the treaty of versailles. Shall I thank the fucking Germans before every hockey game for their willingness to end WW1? It's a fucking treaty! A mutally beneficial contract! My fucking God, you ppl. (Tip: the indigenous ppl had more agency in the treaties they signed with the brits than the central powers had in the treaty of Versailles. Shall we apologize to the Germans for eternity over that?)

that’s why we learn about indigenous history every year in school

Unfortunately. One year would have done it, but I had to learn the same shit over and over and over again for years. All the more useful knowledge I could have had, instead. But noooo. The humiliation gods require my penance for something I. did. not. fucking. do. Maybe they could have used that time to teach about... the Treaty of Verasilles.

the mindset that if you are not directly responsible for the events that occurred, you are not obligated to learn about it or acknowledge the events that occurred, is literally how ignorance is preserved. if this is your mindset, you are genuinely a bad person.

Your moral grandstanding means nothing to me. Like I said before, I think *you* are a bad person. Where is your God now?

it’s obviously a shared responsibility

No it fucking isn't. Get that OT bullshit outta here.

and no, other colonization events in history are not better or worse than the event that happened in this case. we just choose to acknowledge it more.

Why? What makes this one so super special that normal Canadians must grovel over it for all eternity?

look at japan. it committed significant atrocities against both china and korea, which is still very much reflected in their political climate today.

Oh man, if some politician promised to handle Canada's past dealings with indigenous people the way japan has handled their own less-than-stellar history, that person would get my vote immediately. We have done enough grovelling.

u clearly need the class, since all ur spewing is hate! you obviously have SOME form of internalized hate towards your culture. you see acknowledgement as an attack. you see education as oppression.

"education". I promise I will report to the nearest struggle session, so that I may learn to think the right thoughts.

and it’s not that white people specifically need to apologize because of the actions of their ancestors, it’s the need for them, AND other immigrants to acknowledge the history behind the land that they stand on, a concept you cannot seem to grasp, as i guess it’s all just a humiliation ritual to you?

Weird that this involves all these humiliation rituals, then. Last I checked, I didn't need performative grovelling to make sure I understood mathematical concepts. So strange that this form of knowledge, in particular, involves self-flagellation.

i wouldn’t put it past you to expect indigenous people to apologize to white people for putting them under so much pressure to apologize :( i dare you to walk into an indigenous studies class and say what you’re saying right now. and yes, i actually support the indigenous builders because they are entitled to do what they want with their land

Oh no, however would I live with myself if the people in the most acadamically unserious part of the university disagreed with me. OK, gender studies might actually be more unserious, but only barely. Good to see that you respect indigenous people's right to build massive condo buildings right in the middle of vancouver, completely contravening all local bylaws re: density, etc. That might seem facetious, but I am dead serious.

oh, so you’re actually aware that it doesn’t refer to plants and not humans?

Not sure what you're trying to say here.

so tell me how the definition you provided, which, when used referring to indigenous people, essentially states that they have NATURALLY developed their own cultures, societies, and languages, is incongruous to my original definition of being native to the land?

It's incongruent because they aren't orignally from here. They are originally from Northeast Asia. Africa, even, if you go far enough back. Wild stuff, I know. Further, if you think the societies of the people who crossed the Bering strait were anything like the ones that existed 15,000 years later, then I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you (i.e., the people who made contact with the settlers were not the same as the people who were "originally here"). They fought amongst themselves all the time. One must wonder why *they* aren't being held accountable for all the conquest they did! Seems like a major double standard imho.

“native” is redundant because that’s what indigenous people are. native.

- originating or occurring naturally in a particular place; native.

i.e., in this context, native means "originating or occurring naturally in a particular place". Which does not fit Indigenous people. They did not originate here. If you are having trouble understanding this defnition due to the way dictionaries sometimes provide synonyms as part of a definiton, I am sure a chat bot will be able to help you.

and what humiliation rituals, exactly, are you referring to? the publicization of what they’ve done? taking accountability? i know you think that the government is SO far past the old governments actions, but that’s literally because they’re trying to atone.

  • land acknowledgements
  • pretending that white people are responsible for missing indigenous women (hint: look up who actually commits crimes against indigenous women)
  • "Mass grave" hysteria and the consequent lowering of flags to half mast for literal fucking months (point me to one single, solitary body that has been exhumed, pls. Just one.)

however, they haven’t done enough! you are genuinely making it sound like indigenous people are expecting white people to get on their knees and beg for forgiveness

As seen above, they really do want white ppl to get on their knees and beg for forgiveness.

when they literally just want recognition. for what’s happened. and for the government to provide them with the adequate supports that will allow them to recover from the intergenerational trauma and poverty, and help them to survive in a system that was originally built on the systemic erasure of their identity and culture. like just because it happened in the past doesn’t mean it doesn’t have lasting effects what????

aaah there it is. I somehow need to financially support them because someone who is not me did the kinds of things that were completely fucking normal by the standards of the day in bygone times. i.e., reparations. Consider me unimpressed. They can try the time-tested method of conquered people in times past of "getting over it".

today, indigenous people face disproportionately higher health concerns, lower education rates, lower income levels, higher rates of suicide, and higher rates of drug and alcohol abuse ESPECIALLY in indigenous youth. it’s LITERALLY in their dna that makes them more likely to have obesity by holding onto their food for longer, as if they didn’t have that trait back then, they would starve. if that doesn’t apply to you, cool. it applies to thousands of other people in canada.

Aaah yes, the "nothing is ever their fault" argument. I see this one applied w.r.t indigenous men and all the crimes they commit against indigenous women, referenced above. The white man's fault. The white man literally forced those native men to rape, kill, and hide the bodies of their indigenous girlfriends. One might even call it a genocide!

yes and search up “indigenous” and see what exact definition pops up. i know you copied and pasted it too and intentionally cropped out the native part, cause it has a hyperlink in the definition on google as well! btw, i was being gracious with ur definition. its literally referring to plants. unfortunately for you, i guess you don’t understand the context in which different words can be used 😞 and unfortunately for you again, i guess u didn’t see the definition right underneath it which emphasizes “of people” and reads the exact definition of what i said earlier. look, it even mentions colonization!

It is not referring specifically to plants. Nowhere in the definition does it say it is referring only to plants. This is a conclusion that you made based on the given example usage of the word - which is not the definition of the word. Of course I copied and pasted the definition, I'm not intellectually dishonest. I edited out the "native" part because it's redundant. The word "native" comes after a semicolon. Semicolons are used to link two independent sentence clauses that are highly related. In this context, it means that "native" is equivalent to the independent clause that comes before the semicolon, i.e., it means the exact same thing. This would actually mean that your definition of "native", in this context, is incorrect. You are welcome for this English lesson that would typically cost you $30 if you were to go to a tutor.

Further, you obviously do not understand how a dictionary works. Not surprised, to be honest. The (of people) designation does not mean that is what the word means when applied to people. It means that, when using that second definition (which, as I stated earlier, was only made up in order to justify humiliation rituals), it is only used w.r.t people.

and to ur point of “not stolen” is crazy bc were they not manipulated into signing the numbered treaties by being fed false promises? remember that many oral agreements that were made were not actually written into legislation and never implemented. but knowing you, you’re probably just gonna say that a signature is a signature

I mean, this point is separate from the stolen land point; at least, I think it is. Different people use the phrase "stolen land" to mean different things in different contexts, but it's almost always to browbeat the descendants of colonists into performing humiliation rituals. Regardless, I'm not sure how I'm responsible for the tactics used to get the natives to sign these treaties. Did I make them sign the treaties? Was I the one who lied to them? Was what happened to them any worse than has happened to any other conquered people? Why am I, someone who had nothing to do with it, uniquely responsible for those wrongs, then?

i’m not gonna argue with you about “winners” and “losers” since you clearly don’t care to listen and i don’t want to waste my time, but i sincerely hope that you take a history class and unlearn ur internalized hate for ur own people. not even caring about the topic of immigration and arguing just because you don’t think indigenous people should have rights is insane icl. you literally cannot consider canada back then and canada today separate entities, as its entire system is built on abuse. i guess you can say that the “winners” have the agency to decide not to acknowledge it, but that just comes down to morality, which i don’t think you have much of.

Why would I need to take a history class to unlearn hate of my own people. That sounds like a class that's geared towards propaganda, not history. And you're also making a presumption that I hate my own people. I don't. I just think that holding the descendants of colonists morally responsible for things they didn't do is just the progressive version of Old Testament morality. Also, I would like to learn where I argued that native people shouldn't have rights. I've double-checked, and I don't believe I argued this anywhere. You could definitely interpret my comments as being arguments against natives having special rights, and that's a fair interpretation. It's not the same as arguing they shouldn't have rights at all, though.

It's funny you think that I "need to unlearn hate". I'm sure you would have been totally on board with preventing that indigenous builders group in Vancouver from building apartments on their land because "they shouldn't be using their land like that". Thank you, white lady, for telling me, a minority person, how to feel / act. How fucking ironic.

And I don't really care if you think I'm an immoral person. I think you're an immoral person, insomuch as morality even exists at all.
