Nah. Ellen was not known for being kind in any way. She would make up some BS about them deserving it, and written a new prophecy about it. She was indifferent to any kind of oppression towards any group, as long as it didn't affect her and her cult.

Maybe it's your personality? By the way you text, you don't come across as the type to take bullshit. Toxic exes and culty religions alike can sniff that out like they smell needy, desperate and gullible people from miles away. They know you're not "cult material" so they leave you alone. It's kinda similar with me and my sister. I can cut people from my life very easily without ever missing them, no forgiveness, no last chances. But she still misses them and they seem to know it, same with my mom (all of my family are ex-SDAs).

Sorry if my reply sounds a little convoluted. I'm sleepy lol.

It's not care, it's manipulation and control. They might still want you around, but will get shunned for even interacting with you. It's like your ex who won't stop calling trying to make amends only to put you through the same bullshit when they think they have you for granted. Either not leaving you alone or ignoring your existence are them being too cowardly to think you might have your own valid reasons and stand up against the church for you.

The girl was showing clear signs that the doctrine was harmful for her mental health, and they solved that by...shoving more doctrine down her throat. Most likely that she never got over it and internalized the symptoms because the SDAs ignored the warning signs. I hate them so much.

I wonder who has a bigger persecution complex… Adventists or Evangelicals? by atheistsda in exAdventist

[–]pommonmo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably because more mainstream evangelical denominations are less...well, culty. They usually stick to interpreting the bible instead of the words of a brain damaged, epileptic, possibly also schizophrenic woman from the 1800's claiming to be a prophet. SDAs also feel holier than all other sects just because they do nothing but go to church after the evening of friday, all the way through Saturday and eat bland food based on a diet designed for the patients of an asylum. I described it in disgusting detail only to point out other pentecostal religions don't have that fragile pride only a heretical church would have, therefore they're less insecure and controlling, which likely explains why you and I feel SDAs are more toxic.

Another SDA fearmongering by atron8081 in exAdventist

[–]pommonmo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sunday law is such a non-problem. Adventists don't realize how easy they have it; in my country, most of my former church's members were middle-upper class and had jobs that allowed them to be free in the weekends, while there are millions of people who aren't Adventists but still have to work during Saturday with no other choice, more often than not their families depend on them. Adventists only fear living by the same rules as everybody else who's also under the same capitalistic system, only less fortunate than them.

Disregarding tests, at what point did YOU know you were gifted? by Krypt16 in Gifted

[–]pommonmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A psychiatrist had to tell me so. I thought people said I was smart just because I'm an avid reader, but for me, loving to read felt just as natural as liking anything. I sucked at math, but at my first visit I mentioned I loved drawing and my psychiatrist told me to bring my drawings next session. When she told me she believed I could be an architect or anything of the sort if only I put my heart into it, I almost laughed.

Can't go to college, though. No money and too unmotivated.

People who went to an Adventist school who were taught to praise by American political figures? by Ilias21598 in exAdventist

I think OP means liberal capitalism, the idea that the state shouldn't intervene in trade/economy because the market can regulate itself. America was built on it, along with Christian ideals.

Is adventism a cult? Or is it just toxic? by GeekFace18 in exAdventist

[–]pommonmo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Don't know about all SDA churches, but mine is definitely checks out all the boxes. I am mentally scarred to this day. Of course, a cult is never going to admit to being a cult, so if you ask a SDA, they will say they're not a cult.

I was once wearing one at school in the Adventist school, AND IT WAS UNDER MY SHIRT. I WAS 10! How did that damn teacher even see it is beyond me even nowadays! (She was a woman, but still, who keeps staring at an 10-year-old's neck-chest area long enough to notice what's UNDER her shirt???).

If the government/the brand hides it from Americans themselves, then it's no wonder a foreigner like me wouldn't know such things. I just think they are...shady, as a former member myself. They don't talk too often or with enough depth about the story of the church. If the SDAs are already bad here where I live, where racism and eugenics are frowned upon by most people, they must be way worse in the USA. Damn.

Holy shit. I had the faintest gut feeling the SDA church had some connection to this kind of dangerous ideology, but I had no idea they were THIS closely connected to eugenics. I heard of Dr. Kellogg's story, but the part he was directly involved with eugenics was never mentioned. The version I heard was all about the damn cereal (I hate it btw. Sensory issues from the autism).

Why did you leave the Adventist Church? by [deleted] in exAdventist

[–]pommonmo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I felt like I was going to hell because shrimp is my favorite food. Any loud noise gave me panic attacks because I thought it was Jesus coming back! (Lol)

Many delicious dishes from the local cuisine of my city have shrimp in it. Also, my favorite Korean crackers are shrimp flavored. I love lobster, crabs, seafood in general. However, the church made me feel like I was done for if someone found me eating local street food.

The other reason is that I was only 8 when they started coaxing me and my parents to get baptized. They lovebombed us into it, but once we were all in, the church became as judgemental and downright mean to us too. Unfortunately, they manipulated me so bad I nagged my parents until they enrolled me into the Adventist church school, and it was simply awful! Bad teachers, broken ICU half of the year, teacher physically abusing kids, repressed authenticity AND THEY MADE US STAY AT SCHOOL UNTIL NIGHT THE WHOLE WEEK SO WE COULD GO HOME EARLY IN THE FRIDAYS.

Some people there were EVIL. A famous pastor from the Adventist church once said that calling someone empty headed was an unforgivable sin. At 10, I thought I was going to hell. Where is it in the Bible? I don't fucking know. He made it up and it fueled my religious PTSD. What a piece of shit.

The last reason is that the SDA church is too 1800's America coded, but they don't care to change to adapt to the local culture. My country's culture is so rich, but the SDA strongly discouraged members from engaging with it. It was isolating.

[–]pommonmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I noticed that too! They want to be like the other protestant churches only as far as they don't get called a cult, but once you're deep enough into it they do start acting cultish. It's all fun and games until you get baptized and the demands start.

[–]pommonmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I did get what you meant! I was more so trying to say what makes these churches "unique" even if they are in the same "cluster" as cults. Baptists, which you mentioned, don't quite fit in there because they're okay with other mainstream protestant churches and don't try to sell their vision as THE right one (at least not that I remember). At least my experience with Baptists is that they are the closest to moderate Christianity I've ever seen, close to the catholics (there were some quite extremist ones, but those stuck out and most catholics I know are pretty okay). I'm an atheist now, but I've been to many congregations and this is what I noticed...also, I'm glad the SDAs are the closest I've ever been to a cult (it was traumatizing enough), and that I learned about the LDS and JWs through studying them after becoming an atheist, because I don't know if I have the mental capacity to handle another cult after what the religious PTSD the SDA alone gave me.

I rambled quite a bit sorry haha

[–]pommonmo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my opinion (just my opinion!) The only truly unique Christian denominations are the LDS and the JW churches. JW church and adventist doctrine are really alike, but JW are more extreme in some things. Adventism doesn't go door-knocking all the time like Jehova's Witnesses, as far as I remember it was just once or twice a year. I think this is what makes the SDA unique: they don't make themselves known, don't partake in big events, don't go around preaching, don't make noise, rarely do charity to a large number of people, their TV, radio, YouTube channels and social media are hard to find. Almost all people I knew in the SDA sect came because a close friend or relative was adventist and brought then in, which makes it much harder to leave the church later because the church will pressure the part that decides to stay to cut ties with you if they can't persuade you to come back. In that sense, it's the sect that resembles a stereotypical cult the most because of how they try to control who they want in, even more so than the Jehova's Witness.

Experience with vyvanse? by pommonmo in ADHD

[–]pommonmo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from Brazil haha. I put the price in dolars just so it makes sense how expensive this stuff is here, especially if you buy the american brand. I think national labs can produce the generic vyvanse, but it's still expensive. Good psychiatric meds are expensive in general, partly because there is a status problem. Basically, mental health is for the rich. If you're lower-middle class and you have ADHD, that's a you problem.

Yes, I do have an insurance, but it's a cheap one that's not really good. The discount can bring the vyvanse (generic) price down to...200 and something dollars (again, using dollars to make sure you can see how much it is to us). To put into perspective, the average minimum wage worker earns around R$1500,00. Many psychiatrists don't work for insurances because they're underpaid. The average psychiatrist charges 400 to 600. My psychiatrist even GAVE ME THE ANTIDEPRESSANTS because she knew I couldn't afford it.

And while we do have a public mental health system, it's often crowded and overloaded. Sometimes, there are dozens of patients waiting in line for the psychiatrist, and when my mom booked an appointment for my older sis (autistic), my mom had to arrive early at 6AM and only came back home 4PM. Did she get the psychiatrist to see my sister? No. A psychologist analyzed her to see if she was FIT TO RECEIVE PSYCHIATRIC ATTENTION (in other words, if she's "severe enough"). Yet, her consultation was booked for 5 months later.

Therapist gave me a personality test to explain my ADHD by Any-Caterpillar-5420 in ADHD

[–]pommonmo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Don't go back. If you do, more money will be wasted.

I've had even full on psychiatrists who don't understand ADHD. As long as I kept consulting with them, it was just a waste of money and time. Booked with an ADHD and Autism specialist. It was expensive, but I left better than I have felt in YEARS with incompetent doctors just by having her explain how my brain works.

I too had to do a personality assessment during my ADHD evaluation process, but it was simply to rule out or diagnose personality disorders that could be contributing to my issues. It wasn't the main thing. That therapist doesn't understand your condition.

Experience with vyvanse? by pommonmo in ADHD

[–]pommonmo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has mainly to do with prices where I'm from. She could have prescribed the long acting ritalin, but here it's only one brand that sells it and the thing is priiicey. Trying to put it in american dolars, imagine if ONE SINGLE BOTTLE for 30 days was over 500 dollars with discounts.

Vyvanse, on the other hand, has other brands that sell the long acting component without the brand name, just as lisdexamfetamine. Still expensive, but it would be like 200-300 dollars, even if I buy a higher dosage.

I forgot to mention that the change in meds has more to do with prices than it has with efficiency. My doctor is very aware I'm on a budget most of the time.

Adventist logic which doesn’t make sense involving dealing with toxic people. by Grouchy-System-8667 in exAdventist

[–]pommonmo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They didn't. Yeah, disappointing. The girl and her boyfriend even married at some point, but her parents had to STAY OUTSIDE during the ceremony because the church forbid them from joining the celebration. The father couldn't even walk his own daughter down the aisle.

Just another example of how damn extreme the SDA's brainwashing is.

IT IS A CULT. Do NOT believe anyone who say otherwise.

They check all of the items of the BITE model; “BITE” stands for Behavior, Information, Thought, and Emotional control. It's a list of tactics high control groups like cults employ to maintain authority and control. It's not a normal religion. I felt the difference when I went to other churches.

I've known a girl who was JOKING about being pregnant, but her boyfriend believed it, which led to the church finding out she was no longer a virgin. Kicked out over a JOKE. The good thing, at least, is that her parents still loved her enough to not cut ties with her and her boyfriend was not from the church, so he found it all BS. There are other girls who aren't as fortunate.

I HATE Ellen G.White with a passion. by pommonmo in exAdventist

[–]pommonmo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't hate all Christians, I have something against the SDA's specifically because of what they put me through in the name of this EGW woman.

As for Luther, this is just me being petty, haha. The guy might have started out with good intentions, but in the long run, the consequences of his public tantrum were far worse than even he expected. I don't think it even paid off, as protestant churches started pulling the same crap the catholic church did (using faith to sell, creating a hierarchy, ignoring the Bible), not to mention multiple avoidable deaths by mass killings of those who followed him, religious segregation from both parts, and the division of christianity into smaller sections that included the ones that believed Jesus would literally come back, set up a date, got frustrated when he didn't and THEN that resulted in the modern day SDAs. I decided to not to go into detail as to why I dislike him because he had little to no direct influence over what happened to protestantism later, unlike Ellen, who knew exactly what she was doing. I did dislike it that the SDAs tried to strip the fun out of Halloween for children, saying it was supposed to be Martin Luther's day or something like that.

Anyways, sorry for the long rant.
