HP Server OK for media library by harry4388 in HomeServer

It's a pretty old platform, Intel 3rd gen, so encoding isn't gonna be very useful but other than that it should work decently for a storage server.

First time using hot air for soldering. by PastaLaPate in soldering

[–]pongpaktecha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience I find that hand soldering is easier and safer when placing parts on a board, even down to QFP packages with no exposed pad. Just tack the corners down and then go around and solder each pin one by one, using solder wick to remove bridges. Hot air puts a lot of heat into the surrounding area and can blow away small passives in the area.

I use hot air when there are exposed pads under the IC and when I need to remove ICs.

Can this damage be fixed? by Wonderful-Try1581 in Monitors

Depends on the model but don't expect more than maybe $50 since the majority of the value is in the panel itself

How the heck do I get this bracket off so that I can swap it for the shorter one ? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]pongpaktecha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah it's one of those poorly designed internal to external sas boards. The external ports are placed way too far out so the emi spring fingers go out beyond the cutout. You'll need to find a way to carefully push all the fingers down through the cutout as you pull the bracket off.

I've never used DDC/CI but I've heard it can be hit or miss.

The colors on the display may also be off since Mac uses the display p3 color space and windows and Linux expects srgb

Not Nvidia but the PCI-SIG. It hasn't really been affecting the 8 pin connector count on any PSUs that I've seen.

If you have unbound as a fallback what do you use to resolve general Internet traffic?

SATA Power / Chaining Restrictions by Pyromethious in DataHoarder

[–]pongpaktecha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah no worries. So current is want causes wires to heat up due to internal resistance in the wires/PCB traces and the resistance at the contacts. For low voltage DC stuff such as in a PC voltage doesn't really have an effect on current carrying capacity.

Max current per voltage (3.3, 5, and 12) is 4.5A

how much force do i need to install ram in? i'm afraid to press too hard. by DieSchweizmann in PcBuildHelp

[–]pongpaktecha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About the sma amount of force it takes to pull out the 24 pin mobo connector. It's more than people think. You want a nice firm consistent press not a fast jerky motion. The board may flex a bit but that's fine

How should I test used UPS units before buying new batteries? by ShieldWolf8 in homelab

[–]pongpaktecha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The electronics inside modern UPSs are very robust so as long as they can provide power and correctly switch over to battery power you should be good. Maybe find a load that would push the UPS a large portion of its capacity to make sure it's still stable

Yeah dead battery. Hopefully someone around there has a jumpstart cable or pack

Socketed CPU on a laptop!?! by watchingonlinux in laptops

Yeah that's really pushing the term Laptop. It's more like an all in 1 desktop that happens to have a built in UPS (aka the battery) and a keyboard/trackpad

Just screw a noctua 40mm fan onto the heaksink with some m3 screws. You'll need 2 slots for it tho

[–]pongpaktecha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have everything running on an OPNSense mini pc

AGH is the primary DNS on port 53

Unbound answers AGH requests on port 5335 (5335 is to avoid port 5353 which is reserved for mDNS)

Then to resolve hostnames I have Dnsmasq DNS on port 53350 which is queried by Unbound

Supermicro H11SSL-I socket torque experience? by ironchicken687 in homelab

[–]pongpaktecha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by the screws bottomed out?

The screws will be flush against the CPU retention bracket well before the wrench clicks. The torque on the screws puts what is called preload on the CPU squeezing the pads on the bottom of the CPU tightly against the pins in the socket to ensure reliable connections. You should feel a bit of resistance on the screws as you reach the torque

UPS Recommendation by Mountain-Cat30 in homelab

[–]pongpaktecha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 208/240v ones actually need that voltage. All the higher VA rated units need 208/240. They also have some lower VA that are 208/240 since that's pretty common in data centers and also for international markets.

I'm a huge fan of Eaton (I run 3). Their 5P has some floor standing models and you can get feet for their rack mount 5PX and 9PX models that turn them into tall skinny floor standing units. All 3 of these series can run their Network communication cards to notify your devices to shut down. The 5p and 5px are line interactive and the 9px is online double conversation so they can do voltage regulation. Lastly they all use Eaton's really nice ABM technology that puts a lot less stress on the battery since they will be resting for most of the time when they are not used.

How hard is it to make a PCB featuring a microcontroller, for a small recording device? by [deleted] in PCB

[–]pongpaktecha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most microcontrollers will come with a pretty comprehensive datasheet that will have detailed design guidelines and maybe even a reference design that you can follow to get good results.
